Ok so...had a private scan today due to 2 back to to back mc. Anyway.....she scanned my stomach very quickly, said I'm 4 weeks, I'm not, I'm 6 weeks tomorrow. I asked for an internal to double check, she wasn't impressed but did it anyway, again a 1 minute scan said she she was correct. She gave me the info from the scan including measurements etc.

This is where I'm unsure, she took to length measurements, 8mm and 9mm, then took a hight measurement, 4mm. She then added them all together and divided by 3 for the average size and said sac is 7mm and I'm 4 weeks. Now correct me if I'm wrong but u can't take 2 lengths and a height to get an average length can you?

Shes booked me in for 2 weeks time but I'm absolutely panicking here and so confused. Please if anyone is a sonographer or has been in the same situation I'm open to advice. good or bad.

At 5weeks and 6 days it’s almost inevitable that this scan would cause more anxiety OP. If you are 6 weeks you MAY see a heartbeat but it’s not guarenteed as it’s so tiny. However as they couldn’t see the fetal pole either this does really suggest that you are either earlier on than expected, or potentially that it isn’t viable. I would try not to panic, the scan was just too early on to give a realistic result. You may have just ovulated a few days late

To be fair, I'm unsure if my AF was 11th or 17th which obviously is 6 days difference I'm not bothered about yolk sac etc as I know it's not always visable etc. It's the measurements that's bothering me.

I'd try not to panic - she sounds absolutely awful, what a nasty experience! But it might be too early to see anything if you ovulated late. It is always best to wait until 7 weeks to get a scan so you get a clearer picture (and definitely internal). The only measurement they should do is the crown-rump length. That is how early pregnancy babies are measured. Which is one single line. No idea what she was doing!

moosey89 · 22/07/2023 18:45

Sorry - I misread. She was measuring the sac which I'm not sure about. I was talking only about measuring the foetus.

Ems1992 · 22/07/2023 19:55

It’s called the mean sac diameter and she was right. She will have taken measurements in three orthogonal planes.
It is not unusual to not see anything at less than 6 weeks.

AfterGlow87 · 22/07/2023 20:11

The gestational sac is measured in different scanning planes to get what’s called a Mean Sac Diameter - this has been done correctly. This is the issue with going for scans so early in the pregnancy, they are very often inconclusive and you just need time to see how everything develops. It could be measuring behind for a number of reasons, such as an irregular menstrual cycle, late ovulation etc

Everything online says 6mm is average for 5 weeks so if I'm measuring 7mm why did she say I'm 4 weeks?

Try not to panic.
At this stage this stage the measurements are so difficult it's literally the click of a mouse .

Maybe because there is not fetal pole visible yet? All you can do is wait and see unfortunately.

Just updating for anyone in the future. Iv jist been for a pee and had blood/discharge when wiping so I'm guessing this is mc number 3 in a row. 🤷‍♀️ early pregnancy unit is closed now so will give them a call in the morning but deep down I know what's happening.

Thinking of you OP. So sorry if this is what you suspect. Sending love and hugs xx

Another update for future readers, had a scan at EPAS today and they saw Yolk Sac, fetal pole and heart flicker!
£75 I paid for that private scan 3 days ago to be told I was 4 weeks or under and nothing empty gestational sac!

Hi hun this was a long time ago but how did things go?

Peonyyyy · 19/12/2024 21:55

A lot of these private scan places are absolute rubbish - don’t waste your money. Especially not for an early scan and especially if they don’t want to do internal ones.

I went once and they gave me false hope - I miscarried a few weeks later.

if you’ve had miscarriages your nhs EPU should do them for you once you’re over 6 weeks - much more reliable.
