If you are socially awkward, quite new, and don’t know people that well? And at how many weeks?

Email them.

Email - just to let you know, I'll be going off on maternity leave from 7th October.

I told my work people at about 20 weeks!

Whataretheodds · 22/07/2023 07:43

Have you told your boss?

Jenn500 · 22/07/2023 07:46

Is an email to manager ok? What about other colleagues

I would speak to manager face to face about pregnancy.
I told mine ASAP as I had a niche job at the time that I knew they'd struggle to recruit.
I didn't tell my colleagues, they were all fellas and noticed soon enough 🤷🏻

We have to tell work quite early where I work as you need to be put on restricted duties when pregnant and risk assessments done. Feels wrong telling work before you tell family so I waited till 10 weeks and spoke to my manager face to face.

Spottypineapple · 22/07/2023 08:05

Do you have a weekly team meeting or huddle or anything?

At my work it's usually an email or chat to manager, and then when you're ready, in the team meeting the manager will tell the team 'Spottypineapple has some happy news to share, she'll be having a baby in November and we all wish her well' or words to that effect.

Jenn500 · 22/07/2023 08:12

We never have team meetings or anything. It’s only an office job but they usually still do the risk assessments in office jobs. I’m not sure if an email is ok or should request a meeting?
I would have to email when they are not in as feel it’s awkward emailing someone when your sitting directly opposite them

You also need to let HR know so email them both at the same time.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 22/07/2023 08:16

I did that and then told the office gossip while making a cup of tea in the kitchen and she told everyone else for me.

Whataretheodds · 22/07/2023 08:32

I'd speak to manager face to face and follow up with email with dates.

Ask how you need to notify HR.

I would discuss with your manager when other colleagues need to know yet. It may be sensible for them to know sooner for risk assessment/adjustment purposes, or not necessary. Your manager may want to make an announcement about holiday cover.

Sorry mat leave cover, already drifting off!
