5.5 weeks no fetal pole

Hi guys,

Having a bit of a panic so feel free to tell me I’m going mad! Thought I would see if anyone had gone through similar and had any stories of reassurance 😊 I had an early scan today due to previous MCs. Going by my period I should be bang on 6 weeks although I know I ovulated a day or two later (I track ovulation) so in my mind I put myself at about 5+5 or thereabouts. The lady scanning me saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac but no fetal pole and put me at about 5 1/2 weeks. I’ve been reading online that women do see a heartbeat around 5+5 so now because of my history I’m already thinking this one won’t be viable…any stories to calm my nerves!? X

Fetal pole usually only starts developing at about 5.5weeks, that's why early scans are recommended from 6 weeks. Also, sometimes at 5-6 weeks it isn't clearly visible depending on the position of the cervix. I'd leave it 2 weeks and maybe ask for another scan then?

Thanks @BudgetBuster for taking the time to reply. They’ve booked me in for two weeks’ time - it’s going to be a looooong two weeks!

Oh I completely understand the stress of not knowing. I think unfortunately you may have just been a few days too early this time round.

CrazyMILonthecase · 20/07/2023 13:20

@BudgetBuster Oh I really hope so 🤞🏻 Want the next two weeks to fly by but also frightened of things going wrong…

I think 7 weeks is best recommended for early scans as things can just be to early. I don't think it's cause to worry at this stage and seems positive so far with yolk sac!

CrazyMILonthecase · 20/07/2023 13:45

Thank you @Mangotango39 I wish I was more patient! Just hoping the yolk sac is a good sign like you said 🤞🏻

The ladies are right in what they are saying; 5.5 is too early. Fingers corrected all will be ok. I went for mine at 6+6 x

I had scan to check placement at 5+5 and saw the same! They weren't worried at all about seeing no fetal pole. Apparently even a day makes a huge difference to what they can see at that stage! I went for another scan at 8 and a half weeks and everything was fine. She's now 9 weeks old. Good luck!

CrazyMILonthecase · 20/07/2023 16:44

@CR7 Thank you - fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I was scanned at 7 weeks from my period and only measured at 4-5 weeks, with just the sac visible. I went back 2 weeks later and measured at 7 weeks with a heartbeat

they said I probably just ovulated later than I thought. I’m 18 weeks now with no issues😊 hope it all works out for you!

CrazyMILonthecase · 20/07/2023 17:09

@FirstMondayInMay oh congrats! 18 weeks is fab - almost halfway 😊I know when I ovulated and when we had sex last month (there wasn’t much action in that department due to travelling etc!) so I don’t think I’m very far out on my dates but hoping those couple of days will make all the difference and there will be a lovely heartbeat at my next scan 🤞🏻

Hey @CrazyMILonthecase any update on your situation? I am going through the same thing at the mo. Although I was expecting to be about 7 weeks they said it’s about 5 weeks and no fetal pole visible yet. I’m preparing myself for the worst as I was certain with my dates. I have another scan in two weeks. Did you have yours?

CrazyMILonthecase · 13/08/2023 11:04

@Ceebeebee87 Hi, I’m so sorry you’re in this position - the uncertainty and waiting really does take its toll. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good news for me. I went for a private scan a week later as I couldn’t face the 2 week wait and there was a heartbeat but the baby looked so small. I started bleeding 6 days later, had my EPU follow up scan a day after (so two weeks from my original scan which prompted this thread) and they said the baby was measuring nearly 2 weeks behind my dates and with a very slow heartbeat. I ended up miscarrying naturally at home later that day which I have to admit was awful as I’d only seen the heartbeat a few hours earlier (although I knew it wouldn’t make it). I went for a further scan this week and they confirmed everything had passed. For me, knowing it was all over physically offered some relief as it meant I could focus on the emotional side of things. I’d originally been pencilled in for surgery on Thursday if the miscarriage hadn’t happened naturally but my body did what it needed to. I’m still bleeding now, although it’s very light, more like spotting (day 12 of the start of bleeding and day 11 since I miscarried). I know this isn’t the news you probably wanted to hear ☹️ There are lots of women for whom it turns out ok and they go back for a rescan to find everything as it should be. The difficulty is it can go either way and it’s just a waiting game which is so so tough. Sending you love x
