Sun cream in pregnancy

hi, I have read not all suncream is safe to use in pregnancy and wonder if I could get some recommendations for pregnancy safe suncreams available in England please? Xx

I don't know where you've read that....but if it's not on the NHS as a guideline then it's fine. You'll drive yourself mad googling every single thing.

I'm using Soltan (and always did during my first two pregnancies) if it makes you feel any better, but as the previous poster said, you can use anything in the UK I think. If it were in any way unsafe there would have to be a warning on the lable.

Stay away from google. It’s important to protect your skin during pregnancy as it’s more sensitive to the sun. You can find a website that tells you everything is unsafe during pregnancy. A lot of it is rubbish, doesn’t apply to the UK or is just trying to push a product. Look for a 5 star uva/uvb protection and if concerned go for a sensitive one. Superdrug do an own brand sensitive sun cream that has a 5 star rating which I recommend.

I use a mineral based sun cream which is a good alternative to chemical based sun cream.

I switched out my chemical ones for mineral ones also. Space NK do some.

If you google hard enough you can find a crappy blog that says anything is unsafe in pregnancy. 😊

Minerals are of course types of chemicals! There really isn't any advantage, other than satisfying personal preference, between the formulations (unless there are specific chemicals you need to avoid)

ASDA suncreams are very good (high performers in Which? tests, typically exceeding the protection factor on the label)

The reason I went with mineral (which do include chemicals such as zinc), is that they act as a barrier rather than chemical sun creams which absorb the suns rays but can include potentially harmful ingredients. Ive chosen to use mineral as a precaution (having had a number of losses Im being very cautious this time round) but absolutely accept the evidence of harm is very small so I’m only suggesting it as an alternative and not stating that chemical sunscreens are definitely harmful - of course the most important thing of all is to use sunscreen whichever you opt for.
