I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@MaybeBaby2024 My first pregnancy the HG kicked in at 5+5... I'm on my 2nd pregnancy now and the HG didn't kick in until 7 weeks...it tricked me and I thought I might have avoided it. Unfortunately for me it's actually been much more severe this time...somehow

I did read many of stories where people didn't get it a second time or it wasn't as bad so hopefully you'll be okay!

Foxtrotbeta · 14/05/2024 09:17

I'm 20 weeks now, taking ondansetron has stopped me vomiting but I still have 24/7 nausea. If I stop taking the ondansetron I start being sick again quite quickly. Is there any hope it will ease up, or am I likely to be stuck with it all the way through given that I'm still suffering at 20 weeks? Thanks!

Lwrenagain · 14/05/2024 09:27

@MaybeBaby2024 I'm hoping this is a hg free experience for you pal! X

@Foxtrotbeta I was a take them all the way through lass.
Can you get cyclizine to top up your ondansetron to try lifting nausea? X

MaybeBaby2024 · 14/05/2024 09:39

@BeautyAndTheBump1 Still having nausea and the odd dry retch. But haven’t properly vomited yet and I’m still able to eat ok.
Time will tell I guess!

The cyclizine seems to make me really sleepy and drowsy and I didn't find it did very much unless I had it IV in the hospital. But it's been a while since I tried it so maybe I should give it another go.

Mamash · 14/05/2024 12:50

@MaybeBaby2024
HG kicked in at 7 weeks for me in the first pregnancy but in the second, I started to feel the symptoms from about week 4 and by end of week 5 had my first hospital admission. The second experience was a lot worse for me, but I was lucky to get better medical attention plus I was on Xonvea.

MaybeBaby2024 · 14/05/2024 01:54

Ladies who have had more than one pregnancy, did you find the sickness started later with your second pregnancy/ was less severe the second time round?

6+4 with my second and I swear by this stage with my first I was feeling a lot worse than I do now.

I've had HG in all pregnancies, worst in the two that have (fingers crossed) lasted. Both times it has started before 4 weeks and this second one is still going at 16 weeks. Last time it stopped after I gave birth. The main difference this time is that I feel more in control, I know what works and what doesn't and as a 'frequent flyer' the hospital takes me seriously and I have a strong regime of meds and IVs. Am I hell ever doing it again though.

MaybeBaby2024 · 16/05/2024 18:13

@alpinia @Mamash
I needn’t have worried, it has kicked in now. Felt wretched last night and had my first vomit. Nausea all day today.
But yes I know this time what works for me and what doesn’t so do feel a bit more in control of it.

It's still shit though! I've been on sick leave for 10 weeks, I've lost 7kg and I don't see any sign of it changing soon. I keep thinking that I've done this before and we all survived so we should this time too. 💪

MaybeBaby2024 · 16/05/2024 18:32

@alpinia yes I lost a lot of weight in my last pregnancy and was off work for 2 months. But was still sick pretty much the whole way through the pregnancy.
I don’t want to be going off work this time as I am in a more senior role now which is temporary at present. Don’t want to give them a reason not to extend it/ make it more permanent by seeming like I’m unreliable!

Lwrenagain · 16/05/2024 20:18

@Foxtrotbeta how are you pal?
I had cyclizine with ondansetron and prednisolone and I felt exhausted but I couldn't have slept for a bag of gold. Weird times x

Foxtrotbeta · 17/05/2024 07:11

@Lwrenagain still the same unfortunately, pretty constant nausea but sickness is under control. I have an appointment on Monday so I'm going to ask if there's anything else I can try.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 17/05/2024 09:41

I am sooooo over it today! My throat literally feels on fire this morning from the vomiting I am struggling to speak properly because it hurts so much!

I am 22 weeks tomorrow, counting day every second of the day 😅

Started at the same time for me with both just around 6 weeks

Aisah · 17/05/2024 22:20

Mine has been the same so far with baby number 2. I am sorry to tell you i think it depends baby to baby. My hubby thinks this one is worse.

I am dealing better with it because i have changed my diet massively. I had severe acid reflux and GD. I have GD again but i managing both the GD and have had little acid so far because my lists of foods is so small. I wont lie. It is hard but worth it in the longer term for me because all of that and HG killed me the first pregnancy.

Nothing stops the sickness. Another baby burp sickie triggered me today in the park. It was not pretty!

I have opted at the mo to only take one med for the sickness but up until 12 weeks i was on two lines of meds for the HG and that really helped.

I hope you are ok. My nausea didnt stop until baby number 1 popped out and i dont expect this one will be any differently. But i am not you!

MaybeBaby2024 · 18/05/2024 02:17

Thanks for all the replies. It definitely doesn’t feel as bad this time around but I don’t know if it’s just because I was expecting it and know how to better manage it.
The nausea is so much worse at night. I feel grand first thing in the morning.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 20/05/2024 16:42

Anyone experience blood in their vomit / nose after throwing up?

It seems to be a new regular occurance for me, and it's like how much is normal? Do I worry? I've googled and it says it's normal from like burst blood vessels etc

Yes, as long as it is fresh red blood they don't seem concerned at all. Mine seems to be from all the irritation and pressure of vomiting so much. But it is never that much, only streaks in the vomit.

RedRobyn2021 · 21/05/2024 14:19

I've noticed that if I don't go to bed really early like 6:30/7 with DD then I feel really tired the next day and feel sicker. Does anyone else find this?

Dd had a short danger nap yesterday which meant she didn't fall asleep until 8 so I'm feeling rough today

Foxtrotbeta · 21/05/2024 16:20

I'm still feeling really crappy at 21 weeks. My nausea only goes away when I'm eating but other than that still 24/7. At least the ondansetron has stopped the vomitting.

I feel like I'm going to be one of the unlucky women who has sickness through the whole pregnancy! Is there any hope for me at this stage?

I was reading another thread where people were telling the OP she'd feel better in second trimester, and it made me really irrationally grumpy! I wanted to comment that it isn't the case for everyone, but that would just be mean 😂.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 21/05/2024 18:04

@alpinia Thankyou - good to know!

@RedRobyn2021 I find that too - if I don't get enough sleep I'm more sick the day after!

@Foxtrotbeta I have read stories on here of it stopping for people in the 20s, even in the 30s. Fingers crossed for you. I'm 22+3 and still suffering, I had it with my first my entire pregnancy though so I'm expecting the same this time too 🤦‍♀️

AspieMumma · 21/05/2024 19:38

@RedRobyn2021 same, I'm going to bed early and napping in the day if my son is at nursery and I can! Luckily my husband put him to bed in the evening so I can go to bed when I need to
@Foxtrotbetait's so frustrating when people say it will be ok in the second trimester. I'm doing ok at the moment with medication but it's still there at 18 weeks!

SecretSloth99 · 23/05/2024 18:24

Two months with HG and praying for relief soon. I’m 16 weeks at the moment. Metaclopromide seems to help but most evenings still vomiting 3-4 times. I know I’m not suffering as much as some are but mentally this has taken a huge toll. I feel like I’m just existing.

I really need some words of encouragement and some positive stories of it subsiding because this is genuinely one of the worst experiences of my life. And I so desperately want it to be the happiest!

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 23/05/2024 20:07

@SecretSloth99 Have you tried Ondansetron? It's usually the best form of medication for HG so if you haven't I would recommend requesting it from your GP, it should help more!

And on another note, typically HG gets better for most people from 16-20 weeks so you could be near the end of the horrendous experience! Stay strong!

Foxtrotbeta · 29/05/2024 11:41

Just checking in. I'm at 22 weeks. Still taking Ondansatron and cyclizine so not vomitting, but the nausea is still pretty constant. I had 1 really good day last week and thought maybe I was coming out of it, but it's still there this week and evenings particularly bad.
