I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
//sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
//www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
//cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Having 4 is bliss. 🧡
I mean its knackering and very constant, but when it's bliss, it's so worth it. It's good to let the older ones get involved, they have such lovely bonds then.

The cyclizine on it's own did nothing for me, so I needed ondansetron with it. Now, the best way to get it into your system is on a drip from the hospital along with fluids, but usually you'll need 4+ ketones (if you've not been in hospital before that's when they test your wee, depending on how severe your hg is your gp may prescribe the sticks so you can test your own wee, then if it's 4+ you can go to hospital for fluids. However if you're too dehydrated to wee, it's a pain in the arse!)
Ondansetron is the one I've always been prescribed but I believe there is a new miracle drug offered for hg now, so look into that?
Prednisolone is a steroid, its used to boost the efficiency of the ondansetron and cyclizine. It has side effects (it can give you gestational diabetes, which it gave me, it's a fucker but it keeps me out of hospital) but it is worth it if the vomiting is so extreme you're just bed ridden.

The thing about meds and risks to baby is quite simply, without them, you're at risk of dehydration in the extreme and that is a risk to both you and baby. It's a horrid catch 22 but your 3 other kiddos need you!

I'm really sorry it's so bad and of course It's school hols! It always is, isn't it 🙈

Good luck and keep us updated! 💐

I had to come away from this thread for a bit as I was a bit post natal and the sadness of so many hg pregnancies triggered me a bit. Sounds silly when some amazing women can't have babies but I'd see really crappy school mums yelling at their kids or kids looking malnourished and unclean but the mum (complete with red bull in hand and still smoking) is just pushing them out with no drama and there's women like us who just want a normal pregancy experience and I was getting a bit angry! Which I get isn't rational and I'm calmer now my wee girl is a bit bigger and hormones are calming down. But I'm back now.

But I'm hopeful our auntie @LucindaE is doing well, she's a wonderful lass ❤💐

Aw bless you sounds like you’ve had quite a hard time of it… ☹️ I know what you mean when others seem to sail through pregnancy / having kids then we get it so tough, I’m very much feeling “why me?” just now, which is not a place I like being in, I’m usually positive & grateful for my life but it’s hard to feel like that when you can’t look after yourself never mind your own kids.

That’s great info on the meds, thank you, I’ll see how I am in the next couple of days & make a GP appt. My eldest has just brought me up a bowl of Rice Krispies so going to try stomach them so I can hopefully get up for a while… what id do for my morning coffee but wow even the thought of it makes me nauseous 🤢

So glad to hear you enjoy having 4… I just can’t imagine it yet, I’m actually struggling to even accept I’m pregnant tbh, just been such a shock - although we hadn’t taken any permanent measures yet so I reckon I’ll get sterilised & husband snip after this so there’s no chance of this happening again… could never go through this again now. I’m done! Do you feel the same? Xx

Aisah · 31/03/2024 15:06

I am 9 week with second. I am really struggling. HG is awful. Insomnia is awful. I dont feel like me. I am on cyclizine which helps sometimes but i am still being sick at least 4 to 5 times a day. I was this bad last time and had to go off sick but i had depression and terrible PND. I am eating only foods baby can tolerate and eating little and often. Last time this went on until i was 32 weeks. I dont know if i can do this again. I feel so alone!

Lwrenagain · 31/03/2024 19:04

@RubyQueen23 sorry hen, I did reply but it never posted, my phone is buggered!
How are you doing today?

@Aisah how are you feeling pal? 9 weeks is the worst isn't it?
I'm so sorry for you, try and getting some ondansetron to take the sickness away.

Girls, are you keeping anything down? Are we hydrated? X

Aisah · 31/03/2024 19:53

@Lwrenagain 9 weeks really is the worse. I am only sick between 7pm to midnight so i keep down first and second brekkie, not sure about lunch. I am pretty sure i just saw it looking back at me.

I am trying to keep hydrated but it is so hard

I will call the doctor for ondansetron on tuesday.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 01/04/2024 06:49

@Aisah definitely try to get some different meds! Cyclizine was like taking smarties for me they did nothing. And 9 weeks you are in the thick of it!

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 01/04/2024 07:00

I'm 15+2 now - been feeling soooo fed up lately. I managed to have a couple of weeks where I felt motivated and positive but that didn't last long. I had a bad weekend this weekend spent the entire time since Friday unable to keep anything down. Probably should've gone to hospital yesterday but didn't want to ruin Easter for my 3 year old and I'm so over going in hospital now i've been in 6 times already.

My in-laws visited yesterday and arrived at the exact moment I was sat at the dining table attempting to eat some lunch - whilst also violently throwing up into my sick bowl at the same time. Think it shocked them a little to see how extreme it was and what a real day in the life looks like for our family. I always feel that people can say they understand how hard it is but unless they've actually been through it themselves they don't understand at all. Especially when people say things like 'so what are you up to this weekend' ...well, i'll probably spend the morning rotting in bed, then come downstairs and lay on the sofa for the rest of the day rotting until I go to bed at 8pm so I don't have to deal with the day anymore 😁

Bunnymummy89 · 01/04/2024 08:36

Didn't want to read and run as there seem to be a few new ladies. Just wanted to say that I understand how hard it is especially with other children, and I only had the one other to contend with. Totally get feeling like a terrible mum but the fact you feel like that shows how great a mum you are.

It is so hard and nobody understands unless they've been through it because they usually only see you on those odd occasions you're not vomiting out your eyeballs and can turn up briefly to something.

I just wanted to dip in about meds. Cyclizine did nothing for me but make me out of it, I struggled through my first pregnancy on it. Ondansetron didn't touch it for me either but I really rate Xonvea, the new one, the guidance has changed now to include it but you'll probably have to teach the GP that or push to see a consultant through your midwife to get it prescribed, not easy to battle when you feel so rough but it was worth it for me. I still felt bad but it got me to a point where I wasn't physically sick most days and could eat, proof in the 10Ib9 little girl that popped out on the 15/3!! My little boy is absolutely besotted with her and already seems to have forgotten the last 9m of basically not seeing his mama. Kids are so resilient, yours will be fine too and so grateful for their new sibling ❤️ Hang in their mamas x

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 01/04/2024 11:55

@Bunnymummy89 Congratulations! ❤️ that's wonderful to hear, glad you got to the end of your journey and can enjoy life again with your 2 babies now! You have really given me the motivation I needed, so thankyou x

AspieMumma · 01/04/2024 20:41

Hi all, I haven't posted on here before but have come for lots of reassurance. I'm nearly 11 weeks, been through 3 hospital stays so far and so many meds. I'm currently on xonvea which is making a little bit of difference, the problem I'm finding is that my stomach isn't empty 2 hours after eating (unless I've thrown it all up, which Is often the case) and it says it needs to be on an empty stomach. Has anyone else found this or have any advice?

Aisah · 01/04/2024 22:11

@BeautyAndTheBump1 i am so glad you shared. I will get through this somehow and come out of the other end. It is just so hard at the moment.

Hi, I was told to take 2 at bedtime, which worked well except I felt really tired in the mornings. Better than being sick though! I've just hit the 19 week mark and stopped taking it. Still feeling mildly sick but nothing like before. Hold in there everyone, it does get better!

Bunnymummy89 · 02/04/2024 09:32

@AspieMumma personally I didn't always take xonvea on an empty stomach and it didn't seem to make any difference to how it worked for me. I took two at night before bed and that's the starter dose so you could also take more on an empty stomach in the morning, if you can manage pills first thing.. I struggled to take any meds until I'd managed to eat and settle my stomach so the nighttime ones worked well for me as they seem to be the only thing that lasted long enough to give me some relief in the morning

SarahB88 · 02/04/2024 16:16

I’ve not posted in here before but I was told I had HG in my first trimester, everything seemed to settled down about 17 weeks and I’ve been fine since bar a couple of one off sicks.

I’ve been sick 4 times today and really hoping it’s not returning! I’m 33+2. Has anyone had experience of the sickness calming down then return in third trimester? Please tell me it’s not going to be like this until I give birth 😭

SunSparkle · 02/04/2024 19:26

@AspieMumma ask about metoclopromide or domperidone- both work by emptying your stomach. Previous prescribing guidelines for metoclopromide were just for 5 days worth but pregnancy sickness support charity said that should be changed now and can provide evidence to give to your GP or consultant. Domperidone might be easier to get. It works very quickly and I used it to supplement other medication when the food was just sat there going nowhere and it helped with the nausea

Aisah · 03/04/2024 09:49

I just been prescribed domperidone. Anyone else taken this during their first trimester?

I'm a full 9 months puker but I've heard it picking up last trimester is common, sorry 💐

@Aisah nope, how's it treating you? X

Aisah · 03/04/2024 12:01

@Lwrenagain i had a good day yesterday and by that i mean i didnt puke as much. The doctor has prescribed domperidone so i will be trying that and seeing how i get on.

SarahB88 · 03/04/2024 12:03

@Lwrenagain oh no I really feel for you!! I’ve been prescribed cyclezine again so hoping that knocks it on the head.

Lwrenagain · 03/04/2024 13:34

Fingers crossed for you @Aisah! Everything crossed!

@SarahB88 I'm hopeful it works, for me it only mildly helped when used with the ondansetron and prednisolone, so they can boost it if it doesn't do much to help!

Thank you, I was on metaclopromide before Xonvea so ive been to the drs and asked to get more and take both, seems to be helping so far 🤞

SunSparkle · 05/04/2024 08:36

fingers crossed for you @AspieMumma ! When you find a combo that helps you will do anything to keep getting it prescribed! And if you meet any resistance, please use the webchat function with Pregnancy Sickness Support as their PDFs for GPs are so helpful

Aisah · 15/04/2024 22:32

So i thought an update might be useful. I am no longer constantly head in the toilet which i am so unbelievably thankful for. I am still sick but it isnt the relentless hours and hours and constant so i feel more human.

I still get 24/7 nausea and i am pretty sure the meds are making me super tired but i seem to be coping better than i was when i first posted and all the weight loss is being put back on.

The meds seem to be working and i am praying as i move into the 2nd trimester that i get some energy back and start to feel even more human.

For those struggling... there is a little light at the end of the tunnel. Dont suffer in silence!

Lwrenagain · 17/04/2024 20:36

Sending the hg warriors lots of solidarity and support!

Ladies who have had more than one pregnancy, did you find the sickness started later with your second pregnancy/ was less severe the second time round?

6+4 with my second and I swear by this stage with my first I was feeling a lot worse than I do now.
