Worried Growth scans , baby measuring on 10th centile

Hi all just looking for some reassurance, bit worried with baby measuring smaller on 10th centile . She weighed 2lb 7oz at 29 weeks , I have another scan in 2 weeks time .
it’s worrying me as to why she’s measuring smaller ! ( flow from placenta has been fine)
has anyone been or in this situation? What do they do in regards of delivering baby early ?
I already have a planned caesarean for 39 weeks booked in.
thanks !

Hi there just wondering how you got on/getting on? I’m in the exact same boat!

CrispAppleStrudels · 06/09/2023 18:57

This happened to me. I was advised to have induction at 39w, which i agreed to, but baby decided to come spontaneously at 38w anyway. She was a very dinky 5lb 12oz. She had some other health problems but these were not related to her size. We would have been able to go home the next day as usual if she hadn't been ill. I bought a few "tiny baby" sized things and they were still a bit big for her, but very helpful for the first few days.

Ghayx · 06/09/2023 21:59

Thanks for sharing ! What health problems did she have ? Glad all was ok tho .
she went to the 50th centile at 32 weeks & has dropped to the 8th centile now at 37 , they were on about bringing my C-section forward but decided not too . I have my section booked in for next Friday at 39 weeks . I just hope she is ok🤞

Her predicted weight is 5lb 6 at 37+4 so she definitely seems on the smaller side

Hey, I wouldn't worry overly about centile lines. 10th centile is still considered normal and there's a 20% discrepancy as measurements aren't always accurate.

They measure babies on more scales than just a grow chart also. They calculate if they are "small for gestational age" "growth restricted" or normal growth (just on the smaller size)
If your baby had problems with growth that linked to a problem it's likely there would be other problems (like blood flow, heart rate, water levels etc...)

Both my babies were below 10th centile. 1st one was 6lb 3oz and 2nd one was 6lb 13oz

If your worried speak to your consultant or midwife and I'm sure they will put your mind at rest a bit.

Best of luck xx

ConfessionsOfAMumDramaQueen · 06/09/2023 23:26

Looking at my growth chart, 10th centile is about 7lb birth weight at 40 weeks. May be on the smaller side but not an unhealthy birth weight.

sezzer87 · 06/09/2023 23:33

It's no big deal. That just means 10% of babies are smaller then your baby at the same gestation. Remember there are also margins of error in these scans.
Just because someone's small doesn't mean they're less healthy. I'm 36 and only 4ft 11 and there's nothing wrong with me.

Rebsebs · 07/09/2023 00:49

"what health problems did she have"? I'm sure if she'd wanted to share she would have. She's already said it wasn't related to size.

Sorry, i didnt this the message without a tag! She had group b strep sepsis - i didnt know i was group b strep positive, my waters broke before contractions started, then i had a labour that went over 24hrs. Which are all classic risk factors for an infection. So really really nothing at all to do with size.

Hi hope your well what happened with this ? was everything okay in the end I’m abit worried as through my whole pregnancy everything’s been okay apart from measurements always been different but I’m currently 29 weeks today and had a scan at 28 and 5 days was told everything looks normal but then got a call to say I need to have a fetal medicine scan on the scan I was measuring 4 weeks behind at 24 weeks but the scan person said it’s all normal so I thought nothing of it but now I’m having to go to a fetal medicine scan ? I’m so scared that somethings wrong or my baby has a problem what happened in your situation ? I have attached my measurements underneath if you know anything I don’t
thankyou

Looks to me your measuring 4 weeks ahead?? Maybe you got pregnant the month before? If you are 28 weeks 2lb4 is a bit on the small size but my little girl was measuring 2lb7 at 28 weeks she was born 9 days overdue at 6lb8 xx

Lexi02 · 13/05/2024 13:54

I was 28 weeks at this scan so is it measuring behind or ahead ? I’m so confused it says gestational age by dates 24 weeks but I was 28 x

have they got you mixed up with someone else? It seems to say that going by your last period you thought you were 24 weeks but your baby measures 28 weeks, so basically you conceived a month before you thought you did. Were you always aware you were 28 weeks along? Was your last period 20th November?

Lexi02 · 13/05/2024 23:52

yeah at the date of the scan I knew I was 28 weeks so I’m confused as to where 24 came from so that’s from the last period date ? Also I don’t remember my last period exactly as they have always been very irregular but from my first midwife’s appointment that’s roughly the date we thought it was she just went off what I remembered so from then I am am 29 weeks right now also if the 24 weeks is from the estimated last period then really I am not measuring small ? Is everything okay with the measurements then ? 5th to 95th percentile is that okay ? Thankyou so much for replying

Lexi02 · 13/05/2024 23:59

This is what I have about the dates

Squirtleye · 14/05/2024 00:07

How was your 12w scan as they use that for due dates.

Lexi02 · 14/05/2024 00:19

At 13 weeks 6 days scan the due date was estimated 31st July and then another scan right after that was 29th July

Lexi02 · 14/05/2024 00:37

Also thought I’d add on my scan that I included a picture of the information I told the scanner I am 28 weeks so was that put in just because I told him I am 28weeks or because I am measuring 28 weeks ? As it says edd corrected and gestational age 28 weeks which I told him

WonkyBricks · 14/05/2024 04:19

They won't change your she date from that calculated at your dating scan. So it's likely it means baby is measuring on the small side for 28 weeks. I think the fetal med referral is because baby's femur length is on the low side so they will want to investigate that more thoroughly. The sonigrapher should have explained it before you left rather than you getting a letter in the post!

SagittariusUprising · 14/05/2024 06:23

I’ve had two tiddlers, both 5lb 5oz at birth (and absolutely thriving now).

In each there was reduced blood flow from me to the placenta. My eldest was tracking at 50th centile, then rapidly dropped later in the pregnancy. My youngest was tracking at 10th then also dropped.

The pregnancies felt very stressful at the end with loads of growth scans and both were delivered just after 37 weeks. Both thrived after birth and both enthusiastic about milk/food. My eldest is now on the taller side for his age, but the littlest shot back up to the 10th centile and is happily hanging out there, and I think he was just built on the small side.

Ok counting from your last period is 25 weeks, your scan is showing you’re actually 4 weeks ahead of that, so you must have conceived the month before in October sometime, for 28 weeks I wouldn’t say you’re measuring particularly small, if i look back over my scans for my 5 kids they are all measuring around 2lb+ but then i was told i have small babies with my last pregnancy sooo 🤷🏻‍♀️ xx
