How will low iron/haemoglobin/folate/b12 affect pregnancy/birth options?

I had my bloods taken as requested by a consultant for anemia.

My bloods were low for iron at a previous appointment but they didn't inform me of this. I have been feeling extremely faint to the point that i am afraid to go anyway by myself any more.

Bloods were retaken after an episode of reduced movement, low blood pressure and a high baby heart rate. They came back as low in iron/haemoglobin/folate/b12.

I have only spoken to my midwife over the phone but have an appointment with her this week.. just to prep myself in advance how will this affect pregnancy or labour options?

How many weeks pregnant are you?

I doubt it will effect labour options.

You can get on top of it with proper supplementation:

  • Iron Bisglycinate. The most absorbable and gentle on the stomach form of Iron.
  • Methylfolate. The non-synthetic and most absorbable folate.
  • Methylcobamalin. The most absorbable B12.

Ah ok so not loads of time.

I would get straight on the supplements as they will help you feel a lot better.

How low are we talking re iron and haemoglobin?

What is your birth plan currently?

I had low iron identified at 28 weeks and was put on supplements with bloods redone at 34 weeks.

My midwife told me if iron was still low they would offer an IV infusion around 35 weeks to give me a boost for birth. I didn’t need one in the end as the prescribed tablets did the trick. This only happened a month ago so it’s something that’s definitely still offered.

could you ask your midwife if an infusion is an option? Hope you feel better soon.

@Thelazygardener many thanks!

I had heard that an infusion was a possibility.
Potential that they may want to induce me earlier also if bloods still low.
