Horrendous first pregnancy.. severe HG till 20 weeks.. then pre-eclampsia spent 8 weeks in hospital before birth, 3 weeks neonatal after..

Will this all happen second time around?

Sorry to say I had it with DD1 then with DD2. They were born 17 months apart. With DD1 it lasted until about 24 weeks and a couple of weeks shorter with DD2. Couldn't risk it a 3rd time. Good luck xx

Raindropbattle · 15/07/2023 08:15

HG happened both times for me.

Yep, both my pregnancies were HG.

The difference was, I accepted medication the second time, and it wasn’t as terrible. The sickness was reduced, the nausea was still very much there, but a little dulled. I still needed LOTS of rest.

5childrenand · 15/07/2023 08:18

Yes I’m afraid so. Mine was worse second time around.

KatyN · 15/07/2023 08:20

I had it the second time round but not the first.
Different sexes but no idea if that was the cause

Geordielass1987 · 15/07/2023 08:26

had it with both of mine. Was worse with the second but at least you could have a conversation with gp so you could access anti sickness meds immediately?

SuperSange · 15/07/2023 08:30

I had it with all four of mine. Even the three MMC.

Smithstreet · 15/07/2023 08:32

My first and second were bad I was sick all the way to the very end, loads of medication lots of hospital visits. My third was much better, all 3 are the same sex. The first 2 are only a year apart and then a bigger 3 year gap to the last.

Sammilouwho · 15/07/2023 08:40

My first was manageable with medication, ended at 24 weeks. My second was horrendous, medication took the edge off so I was functional but I was throwing up up until I gave birth.

fuckmyuteruslining · 15/07/2023 08:43

It's likely to but management is often better because you tend to seek help more quickly and the diagnosis previously prompts medics to act.
Pre eclampsia depends on whether it's the same father. If it is then the risk of recurring is quite high I think but again it's a known risk for you so management is better and vigilance is high. If a different father then your risk reverts to the normal population risk.

Surroundedbyfools · 15/07/2023 08:46

I had HG with my first pregnancy and absolutely thought I would have it again with this one. Weirdly I don’t ! They are both boys too so unsure why !

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 15/07/2023 08:46

I had it with both. Ondansetron made the second time easier.

Maxiedog123 · 15/07/2023 08:54

Don't know about the HG but re the Pre-eclampsia.
With my first got preeclampsia at 30 weeks, bedrest and meds, then had urgent Caesarian at 34 weeks as BP went really high etc, 3 weeks in NICU.
With my second 2 years later closely monitored, started to get some ankle swelling at 37 weeks, had Caesar at 38 weeks
What I was told at the time is that you tend to get pre-eclampsia later with subsequent pregnancies and that is what happened with me.

MoreHairyThanScary · 15/07/2023 08:54

Had it with first and second but not the 3rd

Yes I was 30 weeks first time too! Did you have to take aspirin second time? Was the antenatal care different?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/07/2023 08:58

I had it badly with #1, less badly with #2 and worse again with #3.

The key is to get medication early.

IIRC on average it is likely to be worst in the first pregnancy but that’s only on average and lots of people will buck the trend.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/07/2023 09:07

I had it twice, out of two pregnancies.
Second time I had a very unsympathetic GP and a two year old which didn't help.
Good luck @bumblebee2903.

Maxiedog123 · 15/07/2023 11:08

It was 15 years ago so no aspirin. I was followed much more closely for antenatal care, with growth scans etc. I was so sure I'd end up on bed rest again I didn't arrange a formal end date at work, and told them I'd likely be going early. At 37 weeks I decided it was time to stop (part time sedentary job).

Maxiedog123 · 15/07/2023 11:11

The Obstetrician didn't want me going longer than necessary so had booked Caesar at 38 weeks.

Nelbert19 · 15/07/2023 11:15

I had HG with my first pregnancy until 16 weeks, it was awful

Currently 8 weeks with my second and so far I’ve been nauseous, but nothing dramatic. I can’t remember when it started in my first pregnancy but I’m sure I was incapacitated by now so hoping I’ll have an easier time This go round!

Puddlelane123 · 15/07/2023 11:21

I had it in every successful pregnancy I’m afraid to say. Definitely factor in as much help as humanly possibly, and take all the drugs offered. The Pregnancy Sickness Support charity (and HG thread on here) was hugely helpful.

I had almost same as you!
HG throughout
Severe pre eclampsia
32 weeks baby born and neonatal stay

Second time I did NOT have HG or Pre Eclampsia
I was heavily monitored though

DC1 was a girl
DC2 a boy

bumblebee2903 · 15/07/2023 14:22

@Katela18 yes my first was girl too 😂

I had it twice - I managed better then second time as I was more willing to take medication and just knew the signs when it was time for a hospital trip for rehydration :(

I was the same with both pregnancies both girls - with a six years age gap! Still amazes me the day they born it just stopped! Though certain smells I still associate the sickness with (Aussie shampoo still can’t stand the smell makes me gag every time! )
