Hi please can anyone help me. I’ve been on tramadol for years for severe back pain due to an injury, I’m am totally dependent on them. I’ve just found out I’m 5 weeks pregnant and I’m so scared what will happen to my baby. Online research is worrying in some and not so worrying in others. Please can anyone advise me if they used tramadol when pregnant and how their babies are 🙏🏼

You're best arranging to speak to your doctor asap

You need to speak to your doctor immediately.

No personal experience OP but definitely speak to your GP. There isn't extensive research done on tramadol and whether it causes miscarriage or birth defects but from what has been conducted, the view is that it does not increase the risk.

Your baby at birth if you remain on the tramadol will likely need to spend on NICU as they will experience withdrawal symptoms from the tramadol which require monitoring and treatment. Steps need to be taken as soon as possible to reduce the dose and find an alternative that is better for both you and baby.

Definitely see GP, they should support you to find alternatives as quite worrying sounds like an addiction

Thanks for the replies so far. I’m just so worried as I didn’t know I was pregnant when I was taking the tramadol so I really need some advice from anyone who has been on them whilst pregnant and need to know if it has an effect

Are you still on tramadol? Such a slippery slope
I ended up on it daily for two years up to 8 a day I was completely addicted and as time went on needed more, I weaned my self off tapered off and have now been off them
Will never take them again. They really did take a control on my life daily

Not help related but I assume baby would have some sort of addiction to them if your consuming daily as it's an opioid, depends on dosage. and can be so hard to stop taking them once your body's been on them for a while
