Hate the smell of my house

I’m currently 8 weeks pregnant and feeling nausea all day long every day. No vomiting though. I’m really sensitive to smells, and unfortunately, I hate the smell of my kitchen and living room. I dread coming home because when I walk in I gag violently and have to run upstairs. DH has to make all meals and keep the kitchen firmly closed. If I need to come downstairs he comes down before me to air out the room. It’s making me feel uncomfortable in my own home. Just 3 weeks ago I didn’t have this problem and then it changed overnight so I know it’s the pregnancy. DH is baffled because he says the whole house smells neutral. I can’t stand candles either right now. Can anyone reassure me that this will go soon?

I did suffer with this though not to this extent in my first trimester.
Have you thought about oil diffusers/wax melts/ or the febreeze plug ins that go into the wall and have the set of 3 oils.

I had the plug ins throughout the house and this helped massively.
If you cannot stand any of that, mine went away after 10/11 weeks! :)

bookbathnap · 12/07/2023 10:06

I had similar in that I couldn’t stand the smell of my husband 😂😂. It went away at about week 14 if I remember correctly. It sucks massively and I really do sympathise. Hope it improves for you soon.

I think I’ll have to find SOMETHING that I can plug in or diffuse that I don’t mind the smell of, I just don’t know what. Thank you for your response-I’ll be so happy if this goes away at 10/11 weeks!

Lavender spays and diffusers are good if you want a clean non cloying scent. Sympathy from me I found the same. It disappeared around 12 weeks thankfully.

DRS1970 · 12/07/2023 13:57

Try burning some incense.

WonkyBricks · 12/07/2023 14:05

I had the same but it lasted the whole pregnancy Sad i was really sensitive to the smell of the plugs/drains in the house and spent loads on those crystals you can pour down. Also tried scented shake on carpet cleaner/zoflora in the steam mop and hoover but nothing really helped.

Hope it eases for you soon OP!

I'm 25 week and certain washing powders make me gag. I've been chopping and changing. I think it's just heightened sensitivity, I feel like I'm always saying "it stinks in here".
Other things I've struggled with but seem to have gone away is partners breath, him in general 😂 and when I opened the dishwasher at the weekend (to empty)I gagged and sicked up a bit. Grim.

MumofSpud · 13/07/2023 09:15

When I was pregnant with DS I used to have to walk to work past a brewery - the smell of hopsConfused
Everyday I was sick in a bin near it!

Luckily it didn't last the whole pregnancy!

But that smell sends me right back! DS is 25 now!

Babdoc · 13/07/2023 09:29

OP, I wouldn’t recommend any diffusers, incense burners, plug ins or artificial scents while pregnant (or ever). They all release volatile organic chemicals, toxic to health. Just open the windows to air the house, and give it time. The nausea and sensitivity to smells usually settles after first trimester.

I experienced new symptoms every two weeks, which appeared and disappeared overnight. I stumbled upon information on the iyoni blog that assured me these symptoms are typical between the 5th and 14th weeks of pregnancy. Find ways to comfort yourself and stay positive.

Oh yes I had this with both pregnancies. My first in our old house,we had this little under the stairs storage space with no door, in the early stages of pregnancy I couldn't stand the smell of it, it just stank of musty dampness. Not something I'd ever noticed before and it went away after the first trimester. Second pregnancy in a new house, the smell of any cooking was horrendous and we have a large open plan kitchen and lounge so I did the same as you and shut myself upstairs. Again massively improved by the second trimester. It's horrible but doesn't last forever.

Inmydreams88 · 15/07/2023 12:52

Yes this happened to me. I have had severe nausea and sickness from around week 7 and whenever I walk into any room it smells awful to me even though I know it doesn’t actually smell bad.

I also used to clean my kitchen with a zoflora kitchen spray, since being pregnant I can’t stand the smell. I will instantly be sick if my husband sprays it. Even if I’m upstairs I can immediately smell it after it’s been used. I had to get my husband to throw it out.

I’m 15 weeks now and on anti sickness tablets, I still don’t like certain smells but it’s not as bad.

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 15/07/2023 12:56

Try sucking a strong mint, if you can stand them. It'll wipe out any other smells! Really helped me with kiddo 2!

TomorrowToday · 15/07/2023 13:34

What about essential oils on a tissue and you smell them? Or Vics?

Housekeeperbatcocoa · 15/07/2023 13:36

Essential oils may not be safe to use while pregnant!

Wallywobbles · 15/07/2023 13:38

I could smell a cigarette in the next county. Eating outside at restaurants was impossible.

To digest or use on your skin. Perfectly safe to use on a tissue to smell.

This is horrible but it does go away by about 16 weeks latest

MrsJ6921 · 15/07/2023 17:51

I hated the smell of our fridge! Even though it’s really clean but smells cold. Oh and also the dishwasher. Both things I’m really not sure of even at 15 weeks pregnant 🤣

I was exactly the same! I couldn't stand anything scented, so I had to have fragrance free toiletries, etc. If I remember rightly, it did ease off after a while, but it was a horrible time.

CurlsAndDimples · 16/07/2023 09:25

Thank you to everyone for your responses-the general consensus seems to be that this will go, or at least get better by the end of the first trimester. I’ve been walking around the house with my nose in a Vicks vapour rub which seems to help. Poor DH is doing all the cooking, cleaning and shopping-he’s very tired! I can’t even go into the kitchen to get a drink for myself, so it’s like he’s caring for a baby already! I can’t wait to get my freedom of movement around the house back.
