Missed Miscarriages

Just wanted to ask if these were common? I know you read a lot about them on the forums, but I’ve also heard they are pretty rare?

I don't know but I'm really scared of having one

Nemo145 · 11/07/2023 09:23

Hi, I’ve had 5 miscarriages, 3 of which were missed miscarriages. I think ultimately your body would realise and you’d miscarry but if you have a scan first and it’s detected then before your body realises it’s a missed miscarriage.

Hopeful588 · 11/07/2023 09:25

Ahh @Nemo145 im so so sorry to hear. Did you ever investigate why you had the losses?
really hope everything has worked out for you xx

I don't know how common they are tbh. Just googled and it said that 1-5% of all pregnancies will end in a missed miscarriage.
My first pregnancy resulted in a missed miscarriage - went to 12 week scan and baby was only measuring at about 7 weeks...there was no heartbeat or anything. I chose the medical management route to induce the miscarriage.

I fell pregnant again about 5 months later and DD is now 19 months old :)

Nemo145 · 11/07/2023 09:31

@Hopeful588 I had all the tests but nothing ever came back. Apparently it’s “just bad luck”!
Im currently 9 weeks pregnant, hopefully this one will stick.

toomanyleggings · 11/07/2023 09:34

I think they’re more common than the numbers suggest. I’ve had one ( as well as multiple early miscarriages), my sil, my friend and one of my colleagues as well. Mine stopped growing at 11 weeks. Still no bleeding at nearly 13 weeks so had surgical management. I do have two children though. We are very much at nature’s mercy in these situations. Even when it comes to childbirth, you can have all the plans you like but your body will call the shots

JenniferBarkley · 11/07/2023 09:52

Probably more common now with so many having private early scans - I went for a scan at 10 weeks that discovered mine, but presumably if I'd waited until my NHS 12 week scan there's a good chance I would have miscarried naturally in the meantime. I'd say that's a common story.

I've had one and was told roughly 25% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, and roughly a third of those will be missed ones picked up at a scan. What someone said about the earlier scans makes sense though, as mine was picked up in an earlier private scan. Only a couple of my friends that had them made it to the 12 week scan to find out. It's made me very scared in this pregnancy, and I had a successful one before this one.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 11/07/2023 10:11

Sorry I mean was picked up at an earlier EPU scan. I'd had some spotting etc, so things weren't quite right. However I also had spotting with my son, panicked and got a private scan, and it was okay. It's so hard, and I hate the total lack of control

Flowerlover010 · 11/07/2023 11:07

@Hopeful588 2 out of 3 of mine were missed. It just means the body basically isnt recognising the mc and we find out before the body has done its bit.

WhiteCatmas · 11/07/2023 11:10

I had one, v common with first pregnancies (anecdotally!). 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage but most of the time women may just think it’s a late period.
There’s so much that comes in to building a tiny human that it’s perfectly logical. It’s the reason why people used to wait until 12+ weeks before announcing.

Mellous · 11/07/2023 11:20

I've had. 3 pregnancies, first one ended in missed miscarriage.

Mangotango39 · 11/07/2023 12:17

I have had 3 pregnancies.

  1. Miscarriage 11 + 6
  2. Missed miscarriage (blighted ovum)
  3. Currently 8 + 4 , had one scan at 6 + 6 and all looking good so far 🙏🏻
FeigningConcern · 11/07/2023 12:34

I had a missed miscarriage. Didn't know they were a thing before. Took my body 6 weeks to actually miscarry so I don't think it's a case of a scan just catching it first as some PP have suggested.

Since I've had one I have spoken to a number of women who also had one so think they may be more common than is thought.

38andtrying · 11/07/2023 12:38

Had MMC with my first pregnancy, discovered at 8 weeks scan, baby stopped growing at 6, super early but absolutely devastating. Now second pregnancy and 22 weeks, all going well so far, my doctor also told me anecdotally that most first pregnancies end in miscarriage, whether that be known to the woman or a chemical pregnancy which woman was unaware of.

If you asking this question because you are worried about a missed miscarriage i understand, early pregnancy is such an anxiety ridden time, but please remember there is more chance that your pregnancy will progress than end

Hopeful588 · 11/07/2023 12:39

Thanks all, I was just curious to see how common they are. Did anyone have any symptoms of it at all? I know they are “missed” but did you ever have an feeling or symptom?

OP posts:
Flowerlover010 · 11/07/2023 12:41

@Hopeful588 after you have 1 i think with any others 'you just know'. I knew with my 2nd and 3rd mc before they happened. Sudden loss of symptoms was what happened for me each time but this doesnt mean its definitely a mc.

38andtrying · 11/07/2023 12:41

@Hopeful588 id didnt think i had any symptoms at the time, but when i look back my pregnancy symptoms did in fact leave, i just thought i was having a lucky time of it, that said my symptoms came and went with this pregnancy which had me absolutely freaked out, a lot of people will have some brown discharge, symptoms leave and on the flip side many people report their symptoms stayed as strong as ever, it really is the unknown.

Are you currently worried about a MMC? how far along are you? what has you worried and have you had a scan at all so far?

Hopeful588 · 11/07/2023 12:46

@38andtrying im just a very anxious person and the more I’ve read about them, the more worried I become!
I’m only concerned because I don’t really have many symptoms. I’m 7 weeks tomorrow.
I did have cramping from weeks 4-6 but that’s subsided. The only other symptom I have had is sore breasts but I’ve woken up today and they don’t seem as sore as they have been. I’m also bloated so I guess that’s something.
I wanted an early scan today but my husband is going away for a few days from tomorrow and we won’t have time to go for one and I also don’t want to stress him out. I also think it could just be my hormones all over the place and making me more crazy than normal!

cocksstrideintheevening · 11/07/2023 12:47

I think 1 in 8 pregnancies end in MC, MMC make up a small percentage of that.

When I had a MMC and actually told people it turned out most of my friends had had 1 or more MC or MMC

Strawberry06 · 11/07/2023 13:14

@Hopeful588 you sound exactly the same as me! I put a similar post up a few weeks ago, you may have even responded! I had a normal (I say normal!) MC at 8 weeks in January and once I got past 8 weeks this time I was relieved only to now be worrying about MMC - I'm terrified when I go to my scan on 28th there'll be nothing there. I've no reason to think that other than anxiety getting the better of me.

I too have barely had any symptoms. Currently (at 10 weeks) I am still incredibly bloated, my nipples are sore/sensitive whenever anything brushes them and after being stuck in my bra all day! And I might be more tired but also not sleeping great so I'm putting it more down to that.

I was in two minds about having an early scan but part of me wants to wait it out and trust my body so I haven't. I just try to keep reminding myself that women do have babies - its more possible than not!

After my first MC, I found out my best friends (who has 3 children) first pregnancy ended in MC. My lesbian friend and her partner were having IUI and she MC'd at 7 weeks.

Its just a horrible waiting game!

JC89 · 11/07/2023 13:16

Mine took 8 weeks to start bleeding (I had one spot of blood the night before my first scan, when I should have been 13 weeks. They said the pregnancy hadn't progressed beyond 5 weeks...)

There was no sign of it before that, my pregnancy symptoms weren't as bad as they have been in my first (successful) or my current (ongoing -19 weeks) pregnancy but as they can vary so much anyway I wouldn't want to read much into that! And I did still have tiredness and nausea, just no actual vomiting....

Hopeful588 · 11/07/2023 13:19

Hi @Strawberry06 i do remember replying to you. I’m the same. It’s the anxiety that’s getting the better of me and the constant reading of missed miscarriages that has made me extremely worried!
I actually know a few people in my family who didn’t even know they were pregnant until much later because they had no symptoms. My sister in law told me yesterday that she found out around 8 weeks only because she had mild car sickness and then realised she hadn’t had a period so tested. So there are loads of people who don’t experience any symptoms at all! so we could just be one of them!
my boobs have been sore but not nipples. The entire boob. But like I say, they seem less painful today and I didn’t have cramps from weeks 4-6 that have no subsided. It’s purely down to that that I’m losing my mind.
this waiting game is soo hard!!

OP posts:
Strawberry06 · 11/07/2023 13:27

@Hopeful588 we could just be. I must admit I've felt more reassured since I coming on here and reading about the amount of successful pregnancies that didn't have symptoms vs the textbook symptoms that ended in loss so I really don't think you can read into symptoms much even though its hard!

My boobs (the actual boob) were much sorer and tender the first time. Don't remember my nipples being so sore but then I didn't get this far.

My boobs feel heavier to lift (I'm an E cup so there's a lot to lift lol) and husband says they've got bigger but that might be cause I've put on weight. Every 'symptom' I have I seem to contradict myself its because of something else!

Hopeful588 · 11/07/2023 13:32

@Strawberry06 we are so the same. I have been feeling more tired recently and get tired doing a 20 min walk when I used to be able to walk for hours! But I thought that was me being lazy.. can’t possibly be because I’m pregnant lol I’ve gone off avocados and I used to lovee them.. but again, I just think it’s because I eat them too often and not because of pregnancy. I’m bloating alot more.. yesterday I couldn’t even do the button on my jeans up but again I put that down to me eating pasta for lunch and not because I’m pregnant!
people keep saying “think positive”. I wish I could, it’s just soo hard. I’ve always been an over thinker and anxious. I actually think it’s time I get some help xx
