So I had a gender blood test saying girl then 16 week scan said boy! Anyone else had this and which is most likely to be right? 😖

I would imagine the blood test. What kind of blood test was it?

AmyHopwood · 09/07/2023 21:32

It was by affinity DNA at 9 weeks gestation claims to be 99.5% accurate so has thrown me as it said girl then the ultrasound technician said boy!

Was the blood test done in a clinic or was it one you did at home?

Imisscoffee2021 · 09/07/2023 21:41

It's tricky as the later in gestation the higher chance of accuracy in blood tests due to more male dna in the blood stream if youre having a boy. The blood test detected no male dna but it may have been too early in gestation. How clear were the scans of the genitalia and how far along are you in the scan?

Imisscoffee2021 · 09/07/2023 21:41

Sorry just realised 16 week scan, again depends how clear the image was of the genitalia, another blood test would be more accurate now if you wanted to double check though.

AmyHopwood · 09/07/2023 21:51

A blood bottle was sent in the post however it had to be done by the doctors so I had the blood drawn venipuncture at the GP the scan I didn't see the screen so I'm not sure how clear it was and I was too in shock to ask questions 🤦

Unless it was an NIPT or similar, I wouldn't trust the blood test. A friend bought me a Sneak Peek test for fun with my second baby, which came back boy. I was sure it was wrong, just a feeling, and right enough DD2 is definitely a girl! If there's any trace of male DNA, on the tube, wherever, it will skew the results to male.

How clear was the scan?

Hollyppp · 09/07/2023 21:57

Blood test more accurate

VillageFete · 09/07/2023 22:47

If this is the same as the Sneak Peak test, it can definitely be inaccurate. I’ve seen it many times.

A Harmony/Panorama blood NIPT test is incredibly accurate, more so than a scan.

I’d be inclined to believe the scan if it’s not a Harmony/Panorama NIPT.

AmyHopwood · 10/07/2023 06:51

It was a NIPT drawn by the doctor and cost over £250 however I felt inclined to believe the scan too I didn't see the screen but the lady said it with such confidence I couldn't imagine her being wrong 😖

I’ve heard where NIPT results are wrong it’s usually when they say it’s a girl but actually a boy. This is because the test picked up the XX chromosome in mums blood rather than the baby’s, and if there wasn’t adequate foetal DNA in the sample it can sometimes not pick things up.
If the scanner is certain she saw a little boy with his parts in your scan then I may be more inclined to go with that. However there is no way of 100% knowing as scans can also be wrong. It’s all very confusing!

graygoose · 10/07/2023 07:07

Just to also add that NIPT giving wrong results is very rare, like less than 1%!

LoisPrice · 10/07/2023 07:12

can you go for a private scan to check and look at screen yourself?

bumblebee2235 · 10/07/2023 07:38

I would just get another scan in a few weeks, think it gets quite obvious then.. we had a girl and they were pretty adamant it was obvious 😂 no dangly bits at all. My partner was disappointed 😅 he kept telling the scanner it was definitely a boy, she looked so nervous telling him otherwise.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/07/2023 07:40

You have the 20 weel anomaly scan coming soon, so that will confirm either way.

Luana1 · 10/07/2023 08:42

I think you'll just have to wait a few weeks for the 20 week scan where things should be clearer either way. I would have thought the blood test would be more accurate though. Anyway congrats on your baby, boy or girl :)

WhereTheSuburbsMeetUttoxeter · 10/07/2023 08:49

Goodness me times move on, I didn't even know there was a blood test, I would have been first in line lol.

I knew from a scan at 18 weeks that mine was a girl - the clear 'burger' lines - which is an awful thing to call it! She was my second. At 20 weeks back in the 90's it was clearly a boy.

Every week seems like a year in pregnancy doesn't it?

Good luck either way! I still feel the desperation to know!

Imisscoffee2021 · 10/07/2023 08:50

@AmyHopwood I'd wait for the 20 week or get a private scan as I'm sure they don't recommend NIPT before 10 week due to a risk of lack of fetal DNA in the sample? Could be that there just wasn't enough to pick up.

CornishGem1975 · 10/07/2023 08:52

I found out boy at 10 weeks from a blood test because the male DNA is present - they can't get they wrong really. With girl I think there is more room for error. Wait until 20 weeks scan when it will be clearer.
