Question about very early scan

Please could I borrow your collective wisdom. Dp and I are on our first cycle of ttc. I have an ultrasound booked as a follow up from when I had an ovarian cyst a couple of months ago. The scan will be about 2 days before my period is due. If I have gotten pregnant this cycle will they be able to tell on the scan? Sorry if this is a stupid question!

Hi OP! Usually we can’t see anything resembling a pregnancy until 4+ weeks (usually about 4 weeks 5 days), and then it is usually just the “sac”. So this would be about 5-6 days after your missed period.

We can normally see an embryo/heartbeat by the end of the 6th week of pregnancy.

source: I am a midwife scanner :)

Thank you that's really helpful to know. I think I'll do a pregnancy test on the morning of the scan anyway. On the off chance I can tell the sonographer if I need to

fingers crossed for you OP! 🥰

Piggy backing here to ask @CrazyCatMom a question (cheeky, sorry!)

i’ve been asked to attend my EPU for a scan today to rule out an ectopic because I’ve had some pretty severe cramping. I’m 5+6. I’m seeing mixed advice online about whether I need to arrive with a full bladder. I’ve assumed this early on it’ll be a TVUS but I wasn’t given any info other than where to turn up.

You don't need a full bladder for transvaginal scan.

CrazyCatMom · 11/07/2023 08:40

@glasspaw arrive with a full bladder as they may want a urine sample. If it is a TVUS (likely at this gestation) they will ask you to empty your bladder prior :)

@CrazyCatMom thank you 💜

I would arrive with a full bladder, I had a scan at EPU at 6 weeks and it was abdominal

Bibijuju · 11/07/2023 09:36

sorry that was meant for @glasspaw

I would explain you are trying to conceive and take the test before you go etc. You are unlikely to see anything on a transvaginal scan until 6 weeks and I think 8 with abdo, not a hard and fast rule though but that's what a lot follow. They may be able to tell you if they can see any chances that could indicate the possibility for pregnancy but honestly depends on how good the equiptment is.
I have my fingers crossed your scan goes well and you also get your BFP soon xx

Sorry for late reply! Thank you for the baby dust though! I was also wondering whether they could tell anymore with an internal scan as that's what they did when I had the cysts
