Baby measuring small 33 weeks

Hi!

I am currently 33+4. We were referred for additional growth scans due to baby measuring small. We have attended today and baby’s abdominal circumference is currently measuring in the 9th centile, 17th centile for weight. The consultant was really helpful and explained that we will be seen again in 2 weeks to monitor her growth and there is a chance she may need to be delivered early. He said the placenta is most likely not functioning as well as it should and that this is something that just happens.

The consultant was reassuring and explained that provided we keep a close eye all should be well but I can’t help but worry.

Has anybody else experienced this and how early did your baby need to be born?

TIA x

Hi, this was me last year. They had no idea why baby ws
wasn’t growing well. So they spotted that she wasn’t growing at a 32 week scan. They then arranged for a scan with foetal medicine at 34 weeks where they said she was on 16th centile and there first scan was probably inaccurate. They then booked me in for a rescan at 37+2 but baby arrived.

She was actually born under 1st centile so she was very small. She got jaundice because of her size. She is now a happy healthy 13 month old. It’s very scary at the time but two things to remember

  1. scans can be very inaccurate so baby might be a normal size
  2. even if baby is small at birth, they’ll be well looked after

Hiya I’m in the same boat- fundal height dropped so was referred for a scan at 34 weeks - baby measuring just above 10th centile. Another scan a week tomorrow… have my section booked for 39+1 anyways but wondering whether they’ll bring me earlier! How did you get on? How is baby? X

Hi!

we had scans every 2 weeks and her abdominal circumference remained smaller than average but was consistent. I was induced at 38+5 and she was born at 39+1 weighing 6lbs 13oz! The consultant wasn’t too concerned as her growth remained consistent. I don’t think they worry too much if they’re above 10th centile ☺️ x

Thank you that’s really helpful! So glad everything was okay for you And 6.13 is a lovely size🥰 Yeah my first was plotting 50th and born 85th so I think that’s why they’re keeping an eye on me. I think we will know more next week as they’ve nothing to compare to seen as it was the first scan! I’m assuming if we drop below the 10th they may suggest bringing it forward? It’s the uncertainty that’s a killer!

Oh I felt exactly the same, not knowing what was going to happen was the worst!! I think unless anything significantly changes they're likely to want to keep you going until around 39 weeks. They would have let me carry on to term if it was just for her size alone as she was growing consistently but we also had a few episodes of reduced movements. I was quite glad to have an induction date too and know roughly when things would happen! Hope everything goes smoothly for you, it'll all be worth it once they're here 😍
