Can I request induction?

I am 40 weeks this week, I have had severe SPD/PGP along with round ligament pain and residual pain from a previous back injury which has worsened and have left me unable to complete any daily tasks for the last 6-8 weeks. It’s now gotten to the point that I am unable to walk much unaided, cannot bath myself without help getting in and out of the tub etc. I am going stir crazy from being stuck in bed most of the time as it is the only place I get any kind of relief.
I am concerned about my ability to labour and be active during this due to the effects on my
mobility.
I have a history of depression and am worried that this will impact my mental health negatively if it continues.
I spoke to the midwife last week and she was non committal about induction options and said to discuss this with my regular midwife. I have been told they will not do a sweep until 40 weeks but obviously no guarantees this will work. Obviously I would never want to do
anything that could negatively impact baby, but past 40 weeks surely induction would be safe?
this is dc4 for me and all my others had been born by this point!
I am really crap at admitting I’m struggling and advocating for myself! I’m so lucky I have a supportive partner who is picking up the slack but I’m struggling every day now.
Any advice welcome!

I went to 40 weeks with my first and 40 weeks exactly the gave me a sweep which started it all off! She was born at 40+2 Definitely ask, I’m 37 weeks and expected to just be left to go to term with all the pain and mobility issues I’m having from pregnancy itself, I honestly just want to cry about it.

I'm not sure about induction, but I would ask anyway. Im 36 weeks and was told I'll be offered a sweep at 39 weeks so not sure why they won't give you one 🤔 if you struggle to advocate for yourself could your partner give them a call? Hope your baby comes soon x

My other three came at 38 weeks so I naively expected this little one to arrive at a similar gestation, I wonder if the fact I’m not as mobile
is delaying going into labour but I physically cannot move!
Im a hcp myself so I don’t understand really why I find it so challenging to advocate for myself but I think I’m going to have to - I genuinely cannot carry on like this.
I understand the logic of not inducing early, but when it’s impacting my mental health as well as my physical health I can’t see why it’s fair to leave me in this much pain! At the antenatal sessions they ran they said they’d do sweeps from 39 weeks but when I asked I was told absolutely no and they’d probably do one from 40 weeks if it was indicated.
Im sorry to hear others are in a similar situation, it’s horrendous!

Yes - I requested induction. Asked at 38 weeks on the Tuesday, was booked for the following Tuesday, bang on 39 weeks. If they refuse you can request them to refer you to a consultant who will approve it. Don't want to say too much where but I requested it for various reasons, one of which was mental health. They didn't resist at all.

I mean "say too much here", not "where"

Funnily enough I was chatting to my midwife about this today.
I asked if I could ask for an induction at 40 weeks. I've had an easy pregnancy and I have no issues, I've just had enough of being pregnant now and I'm ready to get baby out (once I reach 40 weeks).
She said yes of course you can and booked me a consultant appointment.
She also said that I could request a c-section.
I don't know what the consultant will say yet mind.

That’s really interesting to know! I am seeing the midwife on Thursday when I’ll be 40 weeks so will ask then!
Im really not someone who likes much medical intervention so the fact I’m even wanting “extra” in order to get baby here is testament to my desperation to be out of this constant pain! Fingers crossed that it won’t be a difficult process and they’ll let me request!
Feeling glad there will be an end in sight honestly!

I can’t imagine why anyone would refuse you an induction!

Nell80 · 04/07/2023 22:27

I agree! There's no reason to refuse it - I'd be surprised if you met any resistance at all.

Best of luck, I hope you get the outcome you want and get to meet your baby soon!
