Morning all,

I'm 8+2, and have a pregnancy symptom I have never ever heard of before - hives!! The backs of my legs are covered, every hair follicle itches, a big patch of it on my wrist. I'll be calling the doctors at 8am (I don't even have a midwife yet, waiting to hear about my booking in appt) but help! How can I make this itching stop?! Please tell me this won't last for another 7 months?!

I should add, I know this is a pregnancy thing as there have been other threads on here. It's not PUPP, or the liver thing, which are both late pregnancy conditions.

Oh you poor thing, that looks so itchy. I suffer from heat rash so you have my sympathy, hives are awful! Have you tried a cold but dry compress? Like an ice block wrapped in a tea towel? The antihistamine loratadine is safe to use in pregnancy (listed on the NHS website), and might take the edge off the itching. Calamine lotion if needed is also safe, and I used that in my pregnancy when I did get PUPPS at the end. Just for reference, it didn’t work at all, but pine tar soap did! Anyway, I hope you find something that works quickly to calm it down

I had it with both pregnancies and my god the itching, so so itchy it prevented me from sleeping.

A warm (not hot) bath in an an oatbath helped ease it slightly but the best thing was putting calamine lotion on it. You can get calamine from the pharmacy.

The calamine cooled it for an hour or so, enough to let me get some sleep.

For me it wasn't constant through pregnancy (thank god) but it flared up a few times during the pregnancy for a few days at a time.

Mine was on my belly

Just to update, our wonderful GP was able to see me within two hours of calling this morning. She's prescribed a steroid cream and an emollient, and told me I can take one-a-day loratidine, and I'm booked to go back next week to see how it's going. She was clearly intrigued! Ruled out PUPP and atopic eruption of pregnancy as I'm still so early on.

Prescription won't be ready until this afternoon, so I'm taking the rest of the day off and might draw myself an oat bath shortly!

I’m having the exact same problem - since 5 weeks I’ve been covered in hives all over. Extremely itchy. I can hardly sleep at night and doctors have no idea what on earth it is. Been prescribed two different creams but nothing is touching it. It looks exactly the same as your rash!

Did you find your treatment worked? Have you suffered with hives throughout your pregnancy or did they go away?

PlateSpinner23 · 24/01/2024 00:49

My pregnancy didn't progress, unfortunately - never did find out what caused the hives! Hope you're doing OK xx
