Early Pregnancy Scan Weeks Confusion and Worry

Me and my husband found out we were pregnant on 8th June due to pain I was having. The next day I was offered an early pregnancy scan at the hospital. The Dr unfortunately couldn’t see anything in the pregnancy sack and advised it appeared to measure ‘5 weeks’. He then asked us to come back three weeks later to check if it was a viable pregnancy.
In the meantime, we booked a private scan as the anxiety was awful the following week and the scan showed up as one baby at 6 weeks with yolk, sack and heart beat.
Two weeks later we went to the next hospital scan (which was today) and saw a team of nurses. They said that the baby was only measuring 6 weeks 6 days, but that the heart beat was there and everything looked good. They then went on to find another baby and told us we were expecting twins, but the second baby was measuring smaller.

This is confusing, as technically we should be at eight weeks given the other scans and dates we had. Everyone seems to be brushing off my concerns, Dr and husband - but I am really worried there is a week delay in growth and now something will go wrong.

In addition, I have extreme fatigue, some food aversions and bloating - but nothing else - no nausea or tender breasts. This just all seems really strange to me and especially when it’s my first pregnancy in my mid-thirties.

Has anyone had a similar experience with dates and symptoms?

Take the dates that early with a pinch of salt, 12 weeks is when you'll be given your due date and more accurate scan, 6/7 weeks is far to small to get accurate measurements!! At our early scan they put us 9 days behind what we thought we were but at our 12 week scan we were 10 days ahead going off LMP I wouldn't worry at all

Like Loudmouth says, don't worry too much about dates, mine have been moved twice now, all babies grow differently! But they saw a heartbeat, that's incredible! ❤️

As for symptoms, I'm 13 weeks now and if it wasn't for sleeping more and not being able to stand the smell of onion I wouldn't know I was pregnant! My symptoms have been virtually non existent. It's so hard not to worry when you have so few symptoms and everyone else is talking about all of theirs but please try and not compare yourself, as every pregnancy and every woman is different!

Gosh, this is exactly how I feel! Need to stop comparing. Thanks so much for your message! A relief to hear someone else is in the same symptoms situation.

My baby was conceived via ivf, so I knew my exact dates.
Hospital wouldn't go on the dates I knew to be exact and dated her a week behind for the entire pregnancy.

Don't worry about dates. You have 2 heartbeats. Focus on that xx

Just wanted to add not to get hung up on dates as they're working on fractions of mm off a pretty blurry picture. Also wanted to say I'd been in at 6 weeks due to some pain and spotting and they could see 1 sac and yolk sac, went in 2 weeks later and they could see 2 babies, 2 heartbeats but one was measuring a lot smaller, told to expect the worst for that twin. 2 weeks later and both were still there- still 1 measuring much smaller, then by 12 week scan just 1 baby, the other had been reabsorbed.
It's called a vanishing twin and pretty common- don't google it, it sent me into a spiral for weeks. Currently 25 weeks with the 'surviving twin'.
I have everything crossed for both babies, and I'm absolutely not saying this will happen, I'd just never heard of it before it happened to me and as your story sounds so similar to mine thought I'd share.

@Elttek thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear about your other twin, but so wonderful you have got to 25 weeks wishing you the best with the remainder of your pregnancy x

Was this pregnancy successful 😫

Hello @Skatrina33 , yes so far and I am 36 weeks today. We actually found out after a complaint to PALs we were given the wrong information and there were twin babies, it was the one measuring behind that unfortunately didn’t make it.
