To book an early scan or wait it out?

Hi!
So I'm currently 4+3 so very early days and I've not even referred to midwives yet (waiting for my gp registration to be completed as we've just moved house)

However, I am quite an anxious person and although with my last pregnancy I managed to wait till my dating scan which happened at 12+5 I'm not sure I can this time.

If you have had an early scan, what gestation would you say is best? I'm thinking 8ish weeks as a heartbeat should be seen? Any pictures of your 8 week scans (or other early scans) would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

This was mine at 7+1 even though I thought I was 7+5.
We saw a heartbeat as well.

I'd wait till 7-8 weeks. Earlier they may not be able to see much or a heartbeat yet, which will just cause more anxiety.

I had at 7 weeks. I had prev ectopic and really couldn't stand not knowing if pregnancy was viable any longer. It was an internal scan that early.

Capitulatingpanda · 02/07/2023 11:29

There was a heartbeat.

FoodFann · 02/07/2023 11:33

Our private scan place won’t book you in before 7 weeks, so I’d go with that as an absolute minimum.

I will be quite the same if I get my BFP, I will want a reassurance scan ASAP.

That said, I had a scan at 6+6 on the NHS with my first pregnancy due to pains. Everything was fine 😊

Best of luck to you, and congratulations!

Thanks everyone! Have spoken to my DP about it all and he also wants to book an early scan so we are thinking of the weekend after 8 week so I'll be 8+3. 🤞 all goes okay and we see a heartbeat!

I booked for 7 weeks (ended up 6 + 6) saw baby and heartbeat internally 🤗personally I would also have an early scan after 2 MC (one missed)

6 weeks with my twins but history of ectopics and miscarriages.

If I hadn't had a history of those I probably would have waited until around 6-8 weeks

Thelazygardener · 02/07/2023 14:16

If you can hold off a little bit until week 8 I’d highly recommend it to get a clear answer on how things are progressing and it would allow for any small errors in dates etc.

Ive attached my 7+1 scan with the yolk sac clearly and 9+3 scan so hopefully you see something in between those (I had ivf so certain of dates). Good luck! X

allgoodthings84 · 02/07/2023 14:49

I went for 9 weeks (9+1) as knew by the that everything shud be seen as I knew exactly when I ovulated. The closer to 12 weeks the more accurate the measurements will be too. I measured exactly where I expected at that point. If I went earlier I may have been measured as earlier which would have caused me anxiety after 2 losses.

this is mine at 9+1. You could see that it’s a baby and see the arm and leg buds.

Sorry for the typos. I’m now 32+1 and tired 😂

8 weeks was perfect for me. Was still a long wait and I went for another at 10 weeks but it was so reassuring and saw more than we thought we would!

Thanks everyone for your advice/input! Think we will book something this evening no earlier than 8weeks based on lmp, which will be my earliest ever scan as with DS we waited till 12+5. A bit anxious about dates as this time round I didn't track ovulation as my cycles seemed to have regulated since my last pregnancy but my lmp was 1st June and we dtd 15th and 18th so assuming I ovulated around 14th-17th. Last time I knew exactly when ovulation happened! Fingers crossed for a healthy pregnancy! 🤞I'll try to remember to update the post woth a scan pic in a few weeks time!

There was a visible heartbeat on all three of my successful pregnancies at 6+3.

GeriatricMumma · 02/07/2023 16:34

From experience, please don't book before 7 weeks.

Anything earlier and you may not see everything (sac, yolk and heartbeat) which will cause a lot more anxiety and upset.

Yes, I did mean to say I wouldn't book it that early - I had mine so early because of medical reasons.

Leo227 · 02/07/2023 19:46

I know if a lot of babies lost in week 8-9. seems to be a very key period. so we waited until just after 9 to have ours, as didn't want to risk getting excited thinking things were OK, only to lose them a few days later.

Nejnej · 03/07/2023 09:13

We went at 9 weeks. I'm glad I did, but I will say it didn't really relieve the anxiety of something happening.

It was great to see baby, lovely for my husband to connect and definitely helped me get through the crappy first trimester.

Peony654 · 03/07/2023 09:36

I'm not - I've heard a lot of negative stories about those private scan places. And you only know everything is OK within those few minutes they do the scan, it won't change anything, so I'm waiting for the NHS one

Strawberry06 · 03/07/2023 10:24

I had a miscarriage earlier this year and I was always in two minds about it cause I'm an anxious person too but I decided absolutely not.

I've read all sorts of stories about people having scans at 7/8/9 weeks, all being fine, and then losing the baby at the 12 week scan. Personally for me, that would hurt me more. If I went for a private scan it would only reassure me for like a day and it's money I could use on the baby.

So no I've decided to to just trust my body and wait for the 12 weeks scan, which will hopefully be worth the wait.

I accept everyone is different though and whatever choice you make is the right one for you.
