Size of baby at 9 weeks

Hello,

I had an early scan at 9+3 and the sonographer and obstetrician both said that baby was measuring exactly right at 9+3 days, but the measurement seems quite small compared to size charts and what the apps I’ve been tracking suggest (NHS says 22mm is normal for 9 weeks).

They took a measurement of 9.5mm - although the little nugget was swishing around quite a lot so could be to do with that. Does anyone have experience of this? Or am I misunderstanding something? I’m obviously taking their reassurance as solid but I can’t help worry.

thanks for any insight x

I would think perhaps you misheard something. I don’t think they would say everything is ok if embryo is half the size it should be

Thank you @Greensheeps - I’ve just gone over my notes at it does in fact say 24.6mm - when they told me the measurement they must have meant gestational age but I heard length of fetus. Panic over for the time being at least. I think they often assume you understand what they’re saying to you, so I need to make sure I ask more questions in future.

oh super! Glad you found the info to rest your mind! I’ve only had one baby but would say the healthcare professionals I encountered were always over cautious rather than under so defo wouldn’t have been so breezy in the situation you thought you’d heard!
easier said than done but try not to worry about your pregnancy! Id say enjoy it but I hated being pregnant haha

Thanks so much @Greensheeps :)
it’s a strange time (my first) and taking me time to get my head around all the measurements and tests etc. this scan was due to a minor scare which has put me on edge I think. That’s super helpful to know that they’re generally over rather than under cautious! I’ll try to remember that. Thanks again for replying and prompting me to check. You saved me from disappearing down a google hole…!

no worries, I’d say chill but having gone through several miscarriages and IVF I was the least chilled so have been down many a google hole!
all sorts of things can happen, but there’s nothing you can do, by 9 weeks you should be pretty sorted! Wishing you the best for your pregnancy!

Thanks for being kind @Greensheeps - you have really helped me this evening! I’m so sorry to hear of your losses and long journey. Congrats on your little one after a tough road to get there. And thank you for the well wishes!
