18mm sac no baby

GeriatricMumma · 01/07/2023 16:45

I had my scan today (NHS), was told the measures 18mm but no baby.

By LMP I should be 6+1, but I often ovulate late (long cycles).

They didn't seem too positive but won't rescan me for 10 days.

Are there any good news stories for 18mm sac then magically becoming a healthy pregnancy or is it game over?

This is my last chance saloon. 42 years old and accidental by happy pregnancy.

Did they say what the prognosis might be or why they won’t rescan you?

They said as the sack is under 18mm they cannot diagnose a miscarriage.

Have to wait 10 days for a scan.

@GeriatricMumma so sorry you are going through this - we are on the feb thread but I wanted to comment here.

I will be honest I think in the early days it can just be to early at scans. My last pregnancy the same thing happened and although mine was unfortunately a blighted ovum, my post here got very much 50/50 responses with some experiencing the same then going back for rescan and seeing baby happy as Larry.

your cycles sound abit unpredictable so there's definitely hope of miscalculation.

praying you get that good news 🙏
the next 10 days will be unfortunately really difficult so be kind to yourself x

Thank you, I really appreciate it.

From the tone at the hospital it seems unlikely to be good news as the sac is 18mm which should be over 6 weeks.

I think I'm more sad for what is to come and the waiting for the inevitable.

Any advise on the follow on from a blighted ovum being confirmed? I'm thinking id rather opt for surgical intervention. Xx

This happened to me a few months ago. Was told most likely blighted ovum. Went back after 10 days and there was a little heartbeat. I eventually lost the pregnancy at 12 weeks because of hydrocephalus so I’m not sure if that was linked to the empty sac at the first scan maybe indicated slow progress/not viable 🤷🏻‍♀️ good luck 🤞🏻

Mangotango39 · 01/07/2023 18:26

@GeriatricMumma they let me go back a week later and it was confirmed. I opted for the surgery personally as I had no sign of bleeding/cramps at all.

and To be honest, I just wanted to move on and ot have it hanging over me any longer.

I actually had to be rescanned again before surgery as my hcg was still going up .

My surgery experience was positive (if can use that word) and I had no discomfort afterwards. Opposed to first mc natural which was slightly traumatic (further along though) I have been able to get pregnant again 2 years later on first month if you are wanting to try again . 🙏every sperm and every egg is different and that's what I'm telling myself!

I'll be opting to be sterilised as I'm 42.
I think I just want it over with as soon as possible now. I'm assuming they have to offer me the surgical option?

Please to hear this as I've had previous spontaneous miscarriages xx

I'm really sorry. I'm afraid I don't have any useful advice but I've been in a similar position (2 ectopics and 1 miscarriage) so I can understand what you're going though and I'm very sorry.

Sorry to hear about your scan @GeriatricMumma.
I’ve been there a few times and the wait for the next scan is tough.
unfortunately for me both times it was a blighted ovum. The first I took medication which I now regret as it didn’t work twice and so in the end I had to have an MVA which personally I found like torture. Since then I’ve had two D&C and both times my body has healed a lot quicker as has my mind.
Some people do go for a rescan and see the baby next time. I hope things work out for you.

GeriatricMumma · 01/07/2023 21:14

Thank you @Nemo145

Do you remember what measurements you were at? I'm 18mm and they said as I'm just under 20mm I have to be rescanned. I'd rather just get the inevitable over with but I understand their need to wait.
It's supposed to be 7 days but they can't fit me in for 10 :(

They didn’t give me measurements, just both times said it could be too early to see anything in the sac and to go back in two weeks. But when I did the sac had grown but still nothing in it.

Mangotango39 · 01/07/2023 23:09

@GeriatricMumma I found the sizes from
my second scan but not the first. I do not think there was much growth inbetween. Also the gestation is off because I was having very irregular periods at the time , not tracking and was hard to work out without the embryo.

If they don't automatically offer a d&c I think you could push for one if you'd have no natural symptoms if that is what you want lovely.

@Mangotango39
Thank you.

I've slept on it now (with tears) and I am just going to have to wait out the 10 days xx
