worried about missed miscarriage

So I'm just over 8 weeks and I've got my 12 week scan on 28th July.

All of a sudden I'm panicking what if there's nothing there?! I already had an inevitable miscarriage in January and my symptoms have been light so far.

We go on holiday shortly after the scan and now I'm just wondering whether booking an earlier scan might be beneficial incase its bad news I'll have more time to process it. But I've always been against early scans (especially transvaginal) and part of me wanted to wait till 12 weeks. If we weren't going away I'd hold my nerve.

If I booked one for 9 weeks would this be done externally does anyone know?

Really don't know what to do.

Yes, 9 weeks wouldn't be an internal scan. Internal is usually done 5/6 weeks or later if they cannot see baby properly on external scan.

I've had two losses, currently 10 and 4 weeks now. With this pregnancy I've thought the worse all the way along and low and hehold they were there - twins. Definitely get the scan if you need reassurance and remember this is out of your control.

Wow that's amazing - congratulations! How many weeks did you have your scan at?

I was the same, I booked an early private scan at 8 weeks I think, I got a way with ultrasound not internal.. they tried that first and picked her up. Relief!! I found it so reassuring. I still spent the whole pregnancy panicking 😂 but it got me through 2 weeks before panic surfaced again

DustyLee123 · 29/06/2023 10:01

If I were you I’d be getting a private scan, if you can afford it, just to settle your nerves.

I am having huge anxiety after a previous missed miscarriage - I'm having 3 early scans. Some people might say it's excessive but for me it's the way to keep my mental health ok. First one is today, I'm terrified. My thinking is that I want to know if I've had a missed miscarriage as soon as possible so I can move forward. I can't imagine getting to 12 weeks and something have gone wrong at like 6 weeks.

BudgetBuster · 29/06/2023 11:43

Best wishes for your scan today. Just take it one scan at a time x @moosey89

moosey89 · 29/06/2023 11:46

Thank you @BudgetBuster x

@Strawberry06 It's really personal choice . What was the reason you have been against them previously?

I'd prefer to know personally asap if anything was wrong but that's just how my mind works and how I process 😊

I had a private scan at 9 weeks (because of 2 previous losses) and was abdominal. I’m so glad I did it as it showed baby had a strong heartbeat and was measuring exactly as expected for when I ovulated. It put my mind at ease massively. I knew it doesn’t guarantee anything but also knew if there’s a strong heartbeat at that stage then the chances of miscarriage drop massively

toomanyleggings · 29/06/2023 12:59

I’ve had external scans before 9 weeks. No need for a transvaginal. I’ve always had a fair amount of belly fat as well. I wouldn’t have a trans vaginal scan. I had one once at the sonographer was very rough. That said, my missed miscarriage happened at 11 weeks after seeing a healthy heartbeat at 8 weeks. I know they say the chances go down significantly but lots of miscarriages do happen just before 12 weeks so a scan before this time is no guarantee and some of the private scan places are not particularly professional

I've always had the attitude of whatever will be will be and they are only ever a snapshot in time. I'd be more devastated if I had an early scan showing everything to be ok and then it suddenly not be.

Having said that I do agree with what you are saying in if it is bad news, knowing sooner is better, especially as we are on holiday not long after. Not just emotionally but physically if I needed surgery or whatever.

This is my exact fear!

@Strawberry06 I suppose my opinion comes from MMC previously and needing d&c . Was glad to have it over.

It's the norm where I am though they send you for a scan 6-8 weeks to date as standard so I suppose I didn't actually give it much though whether I would have privately or not.

I know after my scan today it's not a guarantee but I am feeling so much more hopeful and that's what my mind currently needed 🤗

moosey89 · 29/06/2023 13:06

@BagelO exactly the same as me. I think as long as you know and appreciate it's only a snapshot, it at least tells you what's happened up until that point. I had a healthy scan at 7 weeks last time, and found out at 10+4 that I'd had an MMC around 9 weeks, but I'm so glad I didn't wait and find out at the 12 week scan x

I had it at 8 weeks, turned out I was only 7 weeks.

Misspotterscat · 29/06/2023 17:09

I am worrying about this too and I have already had three scans (two due to spotting but baby’s heart was beating strong) I’m only 9+5. I’m terrified that I will go to my 12 weeks scan and baby’s heart will have stopped. I’m not convinced it’s eased my anxiety having the scans as like you’ve said, it’s a snapshot in time. However I’ve read that miscarriage chances are lower once a heartbeat has been observed 🤷🏻‍♀️ so I keep reminding myself of this.
