Gender scan wrong

I’ve been told I’m having a baby girl, but people keep telling me ‘oh but it could be wrong - I know _ up the road, and they had the opposite’

I mean… how rare is this actually. I know they say it’s 99.9% accurate.

We had a gender scan at 18 weeks. Should I expect the opposite at our 20 week scan?!

extremely rare

My friend had a private scan at 18 weeks and was told baby was a girl. Nhs scam at 21 weeks and subsequent scans confirmed it was a boy. They even tell you at the scan that it's never 100%

MrsSamR · 22/06/2023 19:11

Of course there can be an element of human error but they don't tell you unless they're pretty sure. FWIW mine were both correct.

I'm guessing there's some gender disappointment at play here?

Xrayvision · 22/06/2023 19:11

No scan is 100% accurate; it is possible to think it’s a girl, but boy ‘bits’ are hiding due to the position of the baby. (So less likely to be wrong if it looks like a boy)
Was this a private scan specifically to look at the gender? Please be aware that ultrasound practice by sonographers in the UK is not regulated, which has led to a range of people undertaking ultrasound. A good sonographer should tell you how confident they are?

Given there are nearly 700,000 birth a year even with 99.9% that is 70 kids a year that will been told a different sex.

That is if it is really 99.9%. At 95% accuracy there will be 3,500 who will be an unexpected surprise.

Sorry some typos! 99.9% is 700 incorrect.

99.5% that is 3500.

95% that rises to 35,000

Well out of the 20 or so women I got to know who had a baby the same year as me, two were told one sex at scans but gave birth to babies of the opposite sex. One was having regular monitoring scans all the way through but it was only when she got to about 30 weeks that one of those scans finally picked up that she was having a boy, not a girl. The other one just had the normal scan at 20 weeks, was told it was a girl then went on to give birth to a boy. Thinking about it, maybe it's the sonographers in my area that are the problem!

themiffy · 22/06/2023 19:47

I was told I was having a girl at my 20 week scan, but to keep the receipts if I bought anything pink. I was convinced I was having a boy and as the sonographer clearly wasn’t too sure, i had private scan later on. It was indeed a boy.

At 37 weeks after having a bleed from my placenta and having to have daily scans whilst I had a weeks bed rest in the hospital a nurse blurted out she and on the monitor it did look like the shape of a girls private parts!

My consultant also told me to expect a very large baby which my mother Pooh poohed saying that was nonsense.

I had a boy and he was 6.2lb. The cord has been tucked up between his legs during the scan.

You’re assuming there that every pregnant woman is told during the pregnancy the sex of their baby. I wasn’t.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 22/06/2023 21:23

Not helpful I know but my second I was told a girl at 20 weeks, she was very sure bless her. At 38ish weeks I had a growth scan which revealed a boy 🤣 oddly enough I went into labour in the car park after hearing that, and he was indeed a boy.

user50316 · 22/06/2023 22:21

Anecdotally I know quite a few who've been told there having the opposite sex to what they have had!

salmonlinguineplease · 23/06/2023 07:31

On the basis of percentages I'd assume your scan is correct but anecdotally I do know someone who was told, baby was a boy, at repeated scans and had a third girl. This was 18 years ago though.
