No heartbeat

I went for an early scan at 6 weeks today and the baby had no heartbeat. I was told I’m going to miscarry and was given option to let it happen naturally or else go in for the tablet to let it happen in hospital. When I read up on this it says online that 6 weeks can be too early for this? I don’t want to make any decisions as I’m holding onto that bit of hope they’re wrong. Can anyone put my mind at ease or have similar stories?

thanks

hi! With this being my first pregnancy all of this terminology is so new to me so this forum is the first time I’ve ever heart of fetal pole and I wish I had have known to ask at the time. This is definitely something I will be enquiring about. Definitely going to be requesting another scan as I just can’t settle my mind with the unknown. Thank you for your reply

I'd call the clinic and see if you can get the results read to you - especially the CRL, whether the fetal pole is visible, if the sac is a normal shape.

That might give you some more peace of what's happening or hope (if the CRL is under 7mm, it's definitely a grey area and they shouldn't be diagnosing miscarriage). Either way it doesn't hurt to wait a week and ask for a second scan. Even when my CRL was over 7mm and the research said no hope whatsoever, I was offered a second scan just to put my mind at ease that I wasn't having an unnecessary D&C.

Alternatively you could ask to check your HCG by blood over 72h. Mine definitely started dropping.

Definitely have another scan! I can't believe that you were told definitively that you're going to miscarry after just one scan that was done right on the cusp of the heart starting to beat. Unless there were other indications of a negative outcome that you weren't necessarily told about.

If I were you I'd book a private scan and see what they tell you there.

She had 2 scans a week apart, not one, and the sac was smaller the second time.

So sorry for your loss OP 💐

Again, this was her second scan. I think a few posters have missed this, unfortunately she has already had the second scan.

I’m making a list of questions to ring with tomorrow morning because this is all information I don’t know and feel I should know. I have a copy of my scan but don’t seem to see any information regarding CRL or fetal pole. I’m hoping when I ring they can give me my measurements so that I can have some closure or acceptance on what they’ve told me. Thank you for replying

I suspect sadly that the fetal pole was over 7mm as if less than 7mm they should have automatically offered you another scan and not offered treatment.

The fact you had 2 scans and no growth seen in that week is also sadly suggestive of a failed pregnancy.

TeaKitten · 20/06/2023 20:38

It’s a great idea to phone and ask questions OP, it sounds like they really haven’t explained it to you very well. But even if the first scan was too early for a heart beat they’d have expected to see growth between the 2 scans, but it sounds like the scan could have shruk a bit, or if their measurements are a little off it atleast hasn’t grown so unfortunately I’d really prepare myself for bad news as it sounds as though they’ve not explained why they can tell that the pregnancy won’t progress. I’m really sorry, and I’d love to be wrong but I just wanted to give a fair opinion based on my experiences.

I’m a midwife (in case my username didn’t give it away). If you have a copy of your scan report I’m happy to look at it and explain it to you if you want to cover up your details on it.

zaratelford101 · 20/06/2023 20:43

i suspected your profession. Im first to admit that I’m holding onto hope that probably isn’t there but even just clear advice would give me acceptance. Thank you for taking time to answer my silly question

@zaratelford101 apologies I have just reread your posts and hadn't realised you had had 2 scans a week apart. It sounds maybe as though there was no growth between the two scans? I'm so sorry.

Madwife123 · 20/06/2023 20:48

It’s absolutely not a silly question! Your are clinging onto hope and that is perfectly normal. This should have been better explained to you at the time also.

Looking at that it seems the measurement isn’t listed. It’s normally listed on the full scan report rather than the photo so you probably don’t have that.

I would phone and ask to discuss the findings of the scan. Ask them what the fetal pole measures. Ask them if there are any changes in-between the 2 scans. It is this that leads to the diagnosis of miscarriage.

If you feel you would prefer to wait a week and have another scan you are able to request that and they should accommodate that for you to give you peace of mind if you feel that is needed.

Again I am very sorry. If you feel you need to talk it through with trained advisors or need any further support The miscarriage association have support helplines and forums and many people report finding it helpful.

nowayhomer · 20/06/2023 21:03

Was this the first scan ? I had to go back after two weeks to make sure there definitely wasn't a heartbeat before they offered any treatment. I'm so sorry you're going through this, it's so cruel

nowayhomer · 20/06/2023 21:05

Sorry just read it was a second scan. As a pp said, maybe there wasn't any growth in between those two scans. Really sorry

jadey1991 · 20/06/2023 21:24

Hi op I'm really sorry to hear this.
I've had 2 miscarriages myself quite a few years ago now. One at 10.5 weeks and 1 at 6.5 weeks.

I would agree with other posters and ask for another scan next week.
They shouldn't really say they can't see heartbeat as your are just borderline 6 weeks.

Try and stay positive and see what they say regarding a scan .. keep us posted
