Hiya

I am currently 20 weeks pregnant in the Al grave Portugal. Struggling a bit with what I can and can’t eat as midwife advised me not all cheese is safe out here and be careful with any fresh foods salads etc.

have still been eating pizza etc as figured the cheese is cooked but feel like I’m limiting myself to a beige diet out of worry.

anyone else been to the Al grave and can advise on portugals stance on pasteurised dairy and making sure salads etc are all washed? I am probably over worrying but midwife didn’t help as one said go enjoy yourself, and the other said need to be very careful of foods etc

thanks

Do you mean the Algarve?

I wouldn't worry in the slightest to be honest. Eat what you like, just make sure meat is well cooked. Unpasteurised cheeses tend to be blue cheese and soft cheese, avoid if you want but I doubt any harm will come. Any cooked cheese will be fine even if unpasteurised.

I’m only back at 25 weeks pregnant and I ate my own weight in cheese and fruit, all inclusive. Try to relax and enjoy your holiday

Hi OP I went to the Algarve around 24 weeks pregnant and I just made sure I google translated anything I wasn’t sure about on menus but most things were in English anyway, plus their milk is UHT which is safe :)

Portugal is part of the EU so food standards are some of the highest in the world. I wouldn't worry at all. I've just been to Greece (also EU) 22 weeks pregnant and ate their delicious salads, cheeses, and all the amazing fresh food. Honestly, the risk is minimal of getting food poisoning and certainly no higher than in the UK
