Brown discharge - really worried.

I'm 4/5 weeks pregnant and just noticed that I've got brown discharge ☹️ has anyone else had this? Mild cramping, nothing severe. I've been having an awful time with faint tests that took a while to darken, they finally did but then at 4 weeks (Tuesday) my Hcg only came back at 19. I'm waiting till Monday for the 2nd test. I did a clearblue test that has a sensitivity of 25 and it came back positive but not a super dark line (I'll put photo below). Not gonna lie, I'm really struggling with my mental health during this, I found out almost 10 days ago and me and my partner can't allow ourselves to get excited yet. I feel so stuck in limbo land it's awful. This brown discharge couldn't have come at a worse time!

I had this at the same stage in two pregnancies. I think it’s called implantation bleeding. Both DDs now young adults. See a doctor for reassurance, but this isn’t unusual.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I thought implantation bleeding happened more like 10 - 14dpo? Like before you find out your pregnant? How long did yours go on for and did you get mild cramping with it?

I had brown discharge at 4 weeks now nearly 13 weeks and everything is okay 😊 x

Pinkmoon23 · 17/06/2023 14:36

@Emmamoo89 thank you for your reply. Trying really hard not to worry but I just keep thinking the worst. Combined with my low Hcg test too. How long did yours last and did you have mild cramping with it?

I had brown discharge at varying moments in early pregnancy - all resulted in healthy babies! I even had one big bleed at 8 weeks once - and that turned out fine too (but blimey it scared me). It happens, try not to panic or worry too much💐

Yes, I had cramping and the blood lasted a few days. I called the GP the minute I first saw blood and was told to go straight to the maternity hospital, where they did an ultrasound and told me I was fine and that it was normal. That was over 20 years ago so I don’t know what the procedure would be now. But it was good to get reassurance.

I had a brown discharge very early in my second pregnancy. I called my obstetrician and she sent me to get a transvaginal ultrasound to make sure it wasn't ectopic. It wasn't, the discharge stopped that day, and the "normal egg sac" they wrote about in the report is now a healthy young woman.

I'm sorry OP hcg of 25 at 14DPO is very low and I would be prepared for the worst x

I didn't actually say what dpo I was and my Hcg was 19. But thanks for the reality check. My anxiety is bad enough, sorry but this reply has really made me feel so much worse. The range for 4 weeks is anywhere from 5 above.

@Pinkmoon23 I just wanted to ask if you are ok? I'm sorry for the anxiety and limbo you are feeling right now. I am at about the same stage as you (4+4) and I had one bit of light pink and then brown spotting on Thursday and it got me really worried! Especially as my previous and first pregnancy ended in an MMC in Feb. I have found myself checking these forums all the time and seeing others check tests often and compare lines... it really makes things much, much more stressful I think. Every person is so different, and just because this your experience doesn't mean something is going to be wrong. Just wanted to send a bit of support and hope that you are alright x

It lasted 2 days and I did. I know how you feel. Sending sticky baby dust. X

I had brown discharge for 4-5 days at 13.5 weeks (after I had had my 12 week scan) which terrified me after 2 losses but everything was fine and they can’t explain what it was. The consultant just said she could only think it was old blood that hadn’t worked its way out at the time of implantation (I didn’t have any implantation bleeding at the time). I’m now 30 weeks and all looking good.

Ljhunt · 17/06/2023 19:13

I had brown discharge and on and off cramps from the moment I got my positive test to about 8 weeks. I was so anxious but all fine I’m 28 weeks now!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 17/06/2023 19:31

I had brown discharge but a little later than yours. It did last about a week and then stop.

Easier said than done but try not to worry. Most women don’t measure their hcg so I’ve no idea what mine has been. Given how light some tests were I wouldn’t be surprised if mine was lower than average.

Pinkmoon23 · 18/06/2023 11:52

Thanks everyone so much for all your kind and reassuring messages. They helped put my mind at ease yesterday, so they are very appreciated. The brown discharge didn't get any heavier and I think for now, he's stopped touch wood. I'm trying to stay calm and realise if I am going to miscarry there's nothing I can do about it. But with having bad anxiety it's not easy at all.
