Antibiotics when pregnant

Has anyone has antibiotics when pregnant? Did it cause any issues?

I’ve had a cold for a couple of weeks now, it’s developed into a chesty cough where I’m coughing up phlegm (wasn’t last week) and my ears are both blocked, very uncomfortable at times. I saw the GP a couple of days ago who said I’ve got an ear infection (we focussed only on my ears). He prescribed antibiotics.

I didn’t start them right away because thought I’d wait in case it’s viral rather than bacterial and I’m also 5 months pregnant so reluctant to take anything.

However I feel so rough today - coughing up a lot of gunk, ears badly blocked and a headache too - so I think I just need to start them.

I wondered if anyone else has had to be on antibiotics when pregnant and whether it caused any issues.

I recently took a weeks worth for a UTI and it was fine. I am 24 weeks tomorrow. They should have prescribed you pregnancy safe ones.

I've had 3 courses of antibiotics throughout this pregnancy (for utis and a sinus infection) 34 weeks now and baby is fine, I would just take them

I’ve had a chest infection for about 6 weeks now and two lots of amoxicillin. I got thrush both times which was great and the cough is still here. Not sure how much of a difference they made or if I would be even worse now without them 🤷‍♀️

Just make sure your gp knows you are pregnant when prescribing as some shouldn’t be taken in pregnancy. (My doc prescribed me something that wasn’t suitable and I mentioned again just before I left that I was pregnant and she changed the prescription 😬)

A lot of people find taking a probiotic when taking antibiotics helpful to prevent any upset stomachs. The antibiotics kill off the "friendly" bacteria in you gut and probiotics will replace them.

The only issue I had, which is quite common according to the dentist is my son has a few white spots on his milk teeth. It is not a given that this will happen, and you can't really see them anyway. If you feel rough, I'd take them.

I had a kidney infection when I was 5 months pregnant and had to have iv antibiotics. My daughter was fine and is now 17 and currently doing her A levels. Honestly no need to worry x

I had antibiotics for tonsillitis later in the first trimester/early second, no problems with it at all.

Thanks, all. I’ve decided to start taking them. Thought I was on the mend but I seem to have taken a u-turn and feel so rough today.

I didn’t take even one paracetamol tablet when I was pregnant with my first in case it affected anything, but at the same time I took the flu and whooping cough vaccines, so I realised I’m being irrational, which was further helped by this thread!
