17 Weeks - how much do I buy

Hi!

I am 17 weeks tomorrow and I already have so much stuff for this baby, we found out she was a girl, I have bought so many outfits, blankets and all sorts, she currently has more clothes than I do! We have bottles, nappies, wipes, dummy's and my mum is buying me the cot and pram at the end of the month which is pretty much same day delivery, so by the end of the month I'll have everything I need, is this weird? Has anyone else done this? I feel like it's definitely very early but me and my partner got so excited and went a bit overboard! I just need someone to tell me they were in the same boat and we're not crazy 😅

Hey! Congrats on your girl ☺️ I’m the same with wanting to buy everything, it seems like it’s quite normal as you want to bond with baby and have that tangible thing. Hubby and I have had to limit ourselves to one big purchase a month to make sure we have things to get each month to give us that serotonin boost. You’re gonna have people telling you you’ve bought too much for sure, but enjoy this time and use it to narrow down the outfits you really want to see her in and the ones you’re ok donating unworn. You only get to experience this pregnancy once, pregnancy is hard and anything you do to enjoy it more is a plus in my book.

I did same, had everything around 20 weeks, I never did it before with my teenage daughters but now needed to be more organised as more things to plan and think about than just this baby. Now nearly 30 weeks and honestly with massive bump, sorting out nursery etc is last thing you want to do.

You can buy stuff whenever you want OP. I had all the big ticket items purchased before 20 weeks because I wanted to make the most of the Jan sales, and also it was lockdown so nothing better to do than online shop!

With small bits just be mindful not to keep picking up bits, especially outfits as they grow so quick you'll waste your money. Or buy sizes up (of the right season)

I wouldn’t personally buy anything until very close to the due date, and even then only essentially. I’m too paranoid. And we won’t find out the sex either

I waited til after the Anomaly Scan before I bought stuff, apart from the odd little sleeps until or hat I loved before the scan.

It's personal choice. I personally haven't bought anything until 30 weeks with each pregnancy as I'm too paranoid and couldn't cope with doing it before baby was even viable. To me the 20 week scan is the biggie so defo not before that.

Laserbeam24 · 16/06/2023 19:27

Total personal choice. I bought my baby her first ever hat when I was 7 weeks pregnant...

Ss32 · 16/06/2023 19:34

With my first I bought some clothes after 20 week scan but everything else I waited until after 24 weeks when she was classed as ‘medically viable’. It’s all personal choice though!
I'm 25 weeks now with my second and not bought a thing! (But already have most things from before!)

I bought loads after my 20 week scan and with the benefit of hindsight definitely bought too many clothes. Since DS has been born, I've taken most of the clothes back to swap for bigger sizes. Of the things he did wear, many were only worn once or twice. The first few weeks he mostly wore basic sleepsuits in newborn size - we found it challenging to actually get out the house at first so seemed a waste to wear the "nice" outfits at home then when we did get out he was hidden away in his pram. He's been quite a sicky baby so any outfit didn't last long before a change. He's since had a growth spurt and almost immediately is out of 0-3 by 9 weeks so a lot of what I've bought in that size won't get worn at all. We've now got a bulging 3-6 and 6-9 wardrobe because I've changed so many unworn things. Can't wait for DS to wear those things - now we're out and about loads, it'll be lovely to wear the nicer things (and not need to buy anything for a while!).

Each to their own! I’m 28 weeks and haven’t bought anything yet. Will wait until 32 weeks or so and then get on it. I’ve just been quite anxious throughout this pregnancy so haven’t wanted to jinx it
