Heartburn relief prescription..second trimester heartburn

Hey all.

I've been using gaviscon double action tablets through pregnancy so far which have worked wonders for my heartburn. Only thing is I buy a box for nearly £10 a week and so I went doctors to ask for it on prescription. I was prescribed acidex advance but feeling like double action works whereas acidex advance doesn't touch me.

I saw that gaviscon double strength contains:

Active Ingredient: Each tablet contains: Sodium Alginate 250mg, Sodium Bicarbonate 106.5mg and Calcium Carbonate 187.5mg.

And gaviscon advance contains:
Active Ingredients: Each 10ml contains sodium alginate 1000mg and potassium hydrogen carbonate 200mg.

Guessing acidex advance is same/similar to gaviscon advance but wondering if there's any medication that doctors prescribe which is just like regular gaviscon/gaviscon double strength as those ingredients seem to help better?

Hope I make sense I'm just sat with agonising uncomfortable heartburn right now and nothing helping so apologies.

There used to be a prescribed medication for heartburn which was removed as it had some harming chemicals in it, I'd used this in my first pregnancy and it was a bloody miracle worker. Have you tried any of the cheaper alternatives? I suffered really badly in both pregnancies and when I'd run out of gaviscon, my Mum brought me some Morrisons antacids and they did the trick. Hope it eases off for you soon as i understand how horrid it is

I haven't no.. I remember Rennie wasn't very helpful when I had heartburn before pregnancy. But I might just give similar ones a go and can see B&M does a cheaper one too. Got an appt for Wednesday so I'll try a couple and fingers crossed they work..and don't break the bank!

I was prescribed Omeprazole too. I can still remember the relief.

They say ginger tea/beer/sweets is good for heartburn if you want to go more natural.. longer lasting effects rather then gaviscon every hour! Trust me I'm creating a bear baby feels like that much heartburn hair!

Same, I took this as well as double action Gaviscon.

Pepcid AC (over the counter) is likely to be more effective than Gaviscon. If no luck with that, ask for omeprazole.

How long did you take this before you found relief from it? Did you have any other side effects?

Hi do you mean with gaviscon advance?

To be honest it gives me instant relief after taking the tablets - it's just if I've had a heavier meal it won't always get rid of it 100% and I'm so terrible with eating smaller meals 5 times a day to help it! I was considering omeprazole but thought I'd try wait it out with Gaviscon. I'm 32 weeks tomorrow so will try to last it out with these until little one is here! If I need extra help I have a small glass of milk which does help :)

It was ranitidine they scrapped a few years back.

I have been given omeprosole too. One tablet in a morning. absolute life saver

Omeprazole stopped mine within hours of the first dose. It was a miracle worker

I do feel like I need to be on that rather than the gaviscon one's that don't fully get rid of it. I asked my doctor other day but she just wasn't giving me the confidence that it's okay to take and mentioned something about it can affect sodium levels etc and to leave it if I'm too anxious. I wanted reassurance but instead she goes if you're too anxious it's not for you! Just want this baby out now and still got 8 weeks or so left!

The nhs says safe to take. It just advises to try non medicated options first. Honestly it was a game changer for me, there's no need to be miserable with heart burn for the rest of your pregnancy
