Hi everyone, I know this has probably been discussed a million times (I know as I’m a long time lurker first time poster) me and my wife (same sex couple) have been going through fertility treatment for just over 2 years now. We are going through IUI. We finally got the AMAZING news that we are pregnant on our latest cycle (3rd try) we were scheduled for our 7 week scan on Monday just gone and when we got there we were so excited. My wife had an internal and they managed to see the Gestational sac, the yolk sac, and they belive the fetal pole but wasn’t too certain, in the end she said it was but was unsure for a while which hasn’t given me doubt, she said she couldn’t see a heartbeat but not to worry as we are measuring to the day. She’s booked us back in for a second scan next Tuesday the 13th. She didn’t say anything more, after leaving the clinic I obviously did the stupid thing of doomscrolling on google and saw that it’s likely we’ve had a MMC. I can’t sleep I can’t stop crying, it’s the longest wait of my life! How common is it not see a heartbeat at this stage? Can it be missed? Can’t wait to hear from you all. Thankyou

Easier said than done (and no judgement here, I'd have done exactly the same as you) but the clinic know what they're talking about and they don't give false hope. If she felt it was likely MMC then she'd have started to prepare you for that. The comment about measuring correct to the day makes me think she was doing the exact opposite - trying to reassure that she wasn't concerned.

Ultimately it's a long waiting game and a hard one. Try to keep busy and distracted over the weekend x

I've not been through fertility treatment but I do remember that when I fell pregnant with my first, I had a private scan at 8 weeks and they told me before the scan to not expect to see anything as it was so early- we saw the sac but no heartbeat, that scan was internal too. I had a healthy pregnancy all was fine

Good luck! X

Mine wasn’t fertility treatment either but I had a scan at 7 weeks and they could only see the sac, when I went back 2 weeks later we could see the baby and the heartbeat. Best of luck for your next scan!

Thanks so much for the reply did they say anything about it being normal not seeing anything at 8 weeks? I just can't help but think this is just bad news for us xx

Yes they pre warned us before starting the scan that one of the reasons early scans are not always a good idea is because they can cause unnecessary anxiety and it's very normal to not see a heartbeat so soon

It's an anxious time especially with a journey like yours but in my (albeit limited) experience it doesn't sound like cause for concern and as a previous poster commented, I think if the person conducting the scan was worried they would have perhaps positioned it differently with you?
