I'm worried I might turn into a whale again - can't stick to Slimming World!

With DS1 I put on 4 stones. I managed to lose it all bar one and then I got pregnant. This coincided with Christmas when I put about 7lbs on.

Since then I have been trying to follow Slimming World, but I struggle a bit; have bad morning sickness and what helps is cereal/toast and I end up going above and beyond what you're allowed to have on SW.

I've also joined the gym to try and limit the damage, but I'm only managing to go 2-3 times per week. If I swim gently for 30 mins non stop is that really going to have any benefit?

I'm just petrified of getting lumbered with an extra stone per baby and ending up massive (I was about a stone more than I wanted to be before I got pregnant the first time!) but I seem incapable of surviving on fruit and yogurts instead of carbs.

Has anyone successfully managed to not put on tons depsite needing to eat little and often? I was hoping if I didn't put on too much this time then the breastfeeding would help melt all the extra and get me back to where I was.

I hear ya!!!

I'm 21 weeks and have put on a stone and a half already. I blame the giving up smoking and spending the first 12 weeks constantly eating 'cos when I was eating was the only time I didn't feel sick.

Personally I think it is easier to lose the weight after the baby comes than limit what I am eating now but from Monday I am going to cut down on 'bad' snacks!

bohemianbint · 21/02/2008 13:18

Aaaahh...oatcakes. I lived on those the last time. A stone and a half isn't so bad halfway through. I suppose on the upside nearly 2 stones of my weight last time was baby+bag+water etc but what was left was a bitch to shift! Although the breastfeeding was really great at kickstarting it.

Are you on baby #1 OatcakeCravings?

Doesn't help that everyone I know is thin, even my friends who have just had babies.

do you actually go to the meetings? i find that gives me more willpower than doing it on my own. what about cycling or jogging - so you wouldn't have to go anywhere to do it just leave the house.

lollipopmother · 21/02/2008 14:02

Why is it recommended that we put on 2 stones? Is this actually how much the baby and the placenta etc etc weigh, or are they really encouraging us to put on actual weight of our own?

MrsTittleMouse · 21/02/2008 14:05

Hi lollipop,
I just posted this on the other thread, but I'm so chuffed that I found it that I can't help myself and I'll post it here too.
If you gain 30lb during pregnancy, only 7lb of that is made up of fat. The rest is:
baby 7.5lb
increase in uterus 2lb
placenta 1.5lb
amniotic fluid 2lb
breast enlargement 2lb (!)
extra blood and fluid 8lb
Cool eh?

nappyaddict · 21/02/2008 14:09

i put on about 2 stone with ds. i think most women put on at least 1.5 - 2 stone!!

lollipopmother · 21/02/2008 14:34

Mouse - that's brilliant stats, well done for finding them! Well I've put on 9lbs already and I'm only 12 weeks pg, so I know that has little to do with the actual baby, but a friend of mine had a very horrible experience recently where she had to have a D&C and she said she instantly lost 3 inches off her waist, and she would've been approx 12 weeks or a bit less.

bohenmian, I always figure that ANY exercise is better than none, so even if you only swim for 10 mins, that's got to help! 30 mins, even if it's gentle, sounds pretty good.

Maybe you could go on the slimming world website and see if they have any tips for pregnant woman or they might have a chat section like this where ppl might have a few ideas.
I gave up on slimming world with my last pregnancy as like u i was stuck on cereal but after a while that wore off and i was able to eat other stuff... maybe once your morning sickness has worn off you will find it easier. At the end of the day you sound like you being sensible and doing exercise and trying to eat well. i wouldnt worry too much

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I did go to the meetings up until a couple of months ago but I packed it in as I was spending a fiver, not able to stick to the plan and putting the weight on anyway. I was putting on pounds but losing a fiver - really depressing!

I guess I'll just have to try to reign myself in as far as possible. (Which is tricky when I've had 2 packets of crisps already today! )

i had to eat little often to help curb morning sickness which lasted pretty much all day, only when i was actually eating did i feel good lol.
Trouble is i am now still hooked on the same pattern and managing my 3 meals a day so i know i have put on extra weight. My bum and thighs are bigger - surely thats not baby or fluid ??
I have tried to stop the sugar snacks but cant help it. I eat low fat where possible and choose healthy option meals then have a helping of jam roly poly and custard for pudding!!
The only exercise i am doing in once a week aquanatal,i think i might try and go to the baths 2 or 3 times a week and see if that helps.
my iron levels are good, not suprising really i just dont stop eating.
I look at my bump now and wonder how much is really baby or just fat
I've always been slim to so thins is a very new thing for me.

charlotte121 · 24/02/2008 20:59

OMG leonie... u little psychic. my midwife left a msg on my phone saying my iron was low lol. Im impressed!
