Cervical ectropian in pregnancy

Hi all, I’m 9 weeks and yesterday had some pink spotting and brown discharge. Completely freaking out I rang the early pregnancy unit who were amazing and got me straight in. Scan showed baby is still alive and growing. Doc did some swabs which I’m waiting results for but the overall impression is that due to my cervical ectropian, this might have just had a bit of a bleed. Doc was happy that it was cervical bleeding rather than any baby related bleeding.

after Googling it I did read that due to increasing hormones and activity ectropian can develop and I assume be irritated as a result.

has anybody else had/got cervical ectropian and experienced bouts of bleeding or spotting during their pregnancy please? Looking for reassurances!

many thanks!
a v. Nervous first time mother x

Hi! Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Yes I had cervical ectropian in both my pregnancies. In pregnancy 1 had 2 every large bleeds (6 weeks and 16) along with spotting on and off until about week 30.
In number 2, large bleed at 6 weeks then spotting until week 16. Got all my bleeds checked out for reassurance.
It's absolutely nerve wracking, and as I'd had numerous losses put me on edge. Although scary it wasn't anything to worry about and had no effect on my pregnancies. Just keep an eye on it and get any big bleeds checked out. Best of luck ☺️

Yes, I had one in my third pregnancy. I started bleeding at 11 weeks and thought I was miscarrying. I had a scan and examination then, which found the ectropion. I continued with frequent spotting and minor bleeds until around 20 weeks. Baby was fine.

I have ectropion, although not formally diagnosed. I had one larger bleeding after 20 weeks but didn't last long and happened when I was constipated and tried to strain. Then I had spotting couple of times. Now nearly 30 weeks pregnant and all fine so far, I'm not worried as it is just cervix surface bleeding, spotting, baby is fine and cervix closed.

@Theawkwardblonde @chickabilla @Moni81 thank you all so much for your replies it is exactly what I needed to hear to make me feel a bit better!!

can I ask if the bleeding seemed to just happen randomly with no particular irritation (I read hormones can randomly cause it) and also what colour it was? Mine has been a pale brown or pale pink colour just wondered what your experiences were?

and again thank you all so much for taking time to reply 🥰🥰 xx

There didn’t seem to be any particular triggers. The big bleed was sudden and bright red when I was at the park with my toddler and lifting him a lot but I don’t know if that had an impact. After that was various spotting/light bleeding of brown, red or pink. I was worried but there were no problems with the baby (she’s 10 now).

Spotting was light red or brown but that's when it was just little and discovered later on pantyliner. Once it gushed bright red with my urine when I went for nr 2. So far it happened only on 3 occasions so it's not regular thing and yes I think in my case it was triggered by strain.

I had one throughout pregnancy, but they didn't examine and diagnose it until 34+ weeks - can't remember exactly. It didn't seem to cause any issues in the pregnancy, and it resolved itself post birth. The hospital said it's quite common - look after yourself and stay away from Google x

I have cervical ectropion. Such a pain for ppl like me who have had 3x recurrent miscarriages and now pregnant again at 8+5. I’ve bled twice so far after a bowel movement which is due to cervical ectropion. But went for a scan today and everything was fine thank god.

Hi all, I just happened to google and found this thread which is exactly my situation. I am 5w 3 d and been spotting since last 3 days..began with pink and changed to brown going back and forth. Spotting has been light, seen only on wiping. Had an early scan but I was only 5w at that stage so could only spot gestational sac and very tiny yolk sac. The scan wasn't very useful but pls let me know what happened. How is the pregnancy going on? I was petrified ever since I saw the spotting and couldn't relax at all. I have very strong symptoms like nausea, swollen breasts, hunger pangs.

My ectropion spotting, bleeding was only 20 weeks onwards and happened 3-4 times under strain. Everyone is different however, so early on it could changing hormon levels, unless you know you have ectropion. Speak to midwife or doctor they are best to advice.

Hi, thank you for your quick response...so happy for your little bub. This is my third one with a gap of nearly 7 years. Meanwhile I had a uterine polyp which was benign and very tiny I'm thinking if this could be related to the polyp.
I had a l HCG test last Thursday which was 2006 and will ask for one more today if it rises I will feel a bit better.
Thank you and will update once I see a doctor.

Moni81 · 14/08/2023 01:43

@Memum3 it could be polyp then, but honestly at the begining of pregnancy there is so many hormonal and cervical changes that can cause spotting. I'm sure you will be fine.
It's also my third one, last pregnancy 12 years ago. After long break it feels like first time, plus I found that this pregnancy is so much different, different body at 42 I guess. For example no sickness or constant thrush but struggling physically more in last trimester under the weight of belly etc.luckily only 2-3 weeks left lol.
