Hi,

I had a private early scan on Wednesday and she said there was a yolk sac measuring 6+4 but she “couldn’t clearly” see a foetus. The place referred me for an internal NHS scan the next day. On Thursday I got there and they actually did an abdominal scan, the woman said she saw a perfect yolk sac and a very small fetal pole but she thought I look around 5 weeks pregnant. My maths told me I’m around 7 weeks but she said depending on when I ovulated it could be earlier. Neither scan detected a heartbeat.

I’m back a week today and she said if there’s growth and a heartbeat we’re all good but if not it’s not viable.

I’m completely beside myself and so so so stressed - I don’t understand how both have measured so different and I’m so confused on dates and just desperate to know if I’m having a baby or not.

Was the first scan an internal or abdominal one? Do you have a regular 28 day cycle? When did you get a positive pregnancy test?
I work in an EPU so I’m wondering is there a possible reason for the discrepancy between 7 or 5 weeks.

Hi!

Both scans were abdominal. My cycle is regular but can be anywhere from 28-33 days. My last period was the 14th April and I got a positive pregnancy test on 16th May.

I'm confused as to how 2 abdominal scans a day apart had different results. The private scan said there were abnormalities in the wall of the yolk sac and 6+4 with no fetal pole. The NHS scan said the yolk sac was perfect and a small fetal pole that looked around 5 weeks. Both abdominal but neither detected a heartbeat.

So going by the positive test date id say you’re roughly 6+5 - now that’s a rough estimate. To be honest at this early stage the gold standard is a vaginal ultrasound, i don’t know how they can make comments about abnormalities with the yolk sac with a TA.

The abdominal scan depends on the fullness of the bladder, BMI and angle of the uterus plus the experience of the ultrasonographer. I’d push for an internal scan next week OP, they should’ve done one yesterday really. There’s still every chance everything could be ok but you need to give it time, which I know is really hard.

Initially it was a trans vaginal scan I was referred for but she did an abdominal then said we would wait a week. I tried to push for the internal but she just said there wasn’t a need right now. Just feeling baffled by the whole thing and wondering how the scans could be so different.

Interesting regarding the abnormalities - I asked them via email and the private sonographer didn’t answer, just invited me back for a free scan to “check again”. Think I’m too nervous and just going to wait for the NHS follow up on Friday. Desperate for them to find a heartbeat but concerned if I am around the 6-7 week mark that they should’ve detected it.

I took a clear blue weeks indicator and it said 3+ when 2 weeks ago it said 1-2. Would this be a good sign?
