79th percentile baby head

Hi, I had a growth scan at 37 weeks which was all fine.

The baby's size overall is at the 47th percentile but the head is at the 79th (legs at 23rd and tummy at 50th).

Will the head look out of proportion or is that kind of result quite common? Is it likely to be a difficult birth? I am not the largest person so worried about it getting stuck!!

Thanks all

My baby’s head is 75th percentile, length and weight 50th (weight was 25th percentile at birth) leg was about 40th percentile. His head did look a bit big mostly at the back but it’s because he was so tiny, since going from 25th to 50th percentile in weight from birth to 8weeks old it’s less noticeable now. I think heads tend to be larger at birth in general.

I ended up with a C-section at 35weeks due to preeclampsia and a concerning ctg/fetal hr so I can’t say anything about the birth or getting stuck.

Mine was 95th percentile and I had him in natural water birth with just gas and air- and his head was perfectly normal looking. I was petrified though! And did all kinds of erhm stretching in advance!

Not sure if the measurement was wrong or the range of normal is actually quite small.

But I wouldn't worry about that number at all!

My first baby was 90th centile head, 75th height and 50th weight. I tore slightly but didn't even need stitches. Natural birth and fairly quick.

Second baby was a pound heavier and had a 95th centile head. I ended up needing an EMCS after failure to progress. I suspect it was due to something other than head size though.

Neither baby looked the least bit out of proportion. My third baby was very similar height and weight to the first, but only 25th centile head. I still tore the same amount, and I can't see a noticeable difference in proportions or head sizes in photos.

I don't think you need to worry. But you might as well, because we all find something to worry about when pregnant 😉. I hope it goes well for you both.

I may win 98 centile head /12 centile body! I did have forceps so head looked a hit misshapen to start but wasn't even noticeably big/out of proportion

My first had a 91st percentile head at birth and weighed on the 9th centile 😁 TBH she did look a bit odd but that was more her skinny body than the disproportion between body and head.

A big head isn’t going to spoil your chance of a nice simple delivery. An average head and a big body would be a much, much bigger problem!

Good luck!

Thank you everyone, this is reassuring ☺️
