What was the first thing you felt like eating or drinking once you had delivered your baby?
Also, which foods would you recommend to help you recover from labour? About to be FTM and I'm just curious for people's recommendations for food/drink as part of recovery after labour?

Thanks 🙂

After a very long and distressing birth I was given a cheese and tomato cob and coffee. It was the best cob I’d ever eaten. And the jam on toast the next morning was amazing too 😂

Strong sugary tea and buttery toast, made by a midwife. Best meal ever.

VintageThoughts · 01/06/2023 19:40

Tea and toast for me.

Best meal I've ever eaten 🙂

Nat6999 · 01/06/2023 19:40

I had ds on the Monday night & other than buttered teacakes my mum brought, didn't eat anything until I got home on the Friday evening. I wouldn't have given the hospital food to a dog, I had bacon, fried bread, mushrooms & tomatoes when I got home, it didn't touch the sides, I had only drunk Lucozade in the hospital, the jugs of water were always lukewarm & I only drink water freezing cold.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/06/2023 19:42

I can’t remember. The unit had a fridge with sandwiches so one of those probably.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/06/2023 19:45

Tea and toast as well.

The midwives even made it for me for my home birth, which was sweet of them.

I don't remember what I ate as my dinners after the MLU births, but after my 3rd was born at home my Mum made sausage & bean casserole for dinner and it was possibly the best meal I've ever eaten.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 01/06/2023 19:48

I was nil by mouth for over 24hrs due to a severe reaction to one of the meds. I had tiny sips of like warm hospital water until H got me a bottle from the hospital shop.

SirChenjins · 01/06/2023 19:48

Tea and toast. Best meal I’ve ever had.

Hyperemesis, throwing up everyday day 5-16 times from 6 weeks, including 5 times during the birth and on the operating table, emergency c- section.
The most amazing thing I have ever eaten was a Brie baguette 🥖.My mouth is watering now .

Sewaccidentprone · 01/06/2023 19:54

Ds1 tea and toast as standard. Dm then came to visit after a few hours and brought me some home made cheese sandwiches, a bottle of ribena and a box of maltesers. That was 27 years ago and still remember devouring them as was about 8pm and only had 2 weetabix around 12 hrs previously.

ds2, tea and toast. Was born around 1am, and again not eaten since 8am. No open shops nearby, no deliveroo etc then. Someone eventually managed to rustle up an egg sandwich.

Do remember eating beans on toast for lunch ever day for weeks afterwards though.

Buttered toast with... Blush sugar sprinkled on top! I had no idea at the time but I asked for it and it was a dim and distant memory from childhood. (I think Indian relatives gave it me as a kid!) What a crazy and unhealthy thing but I wanted the carb and sugar I guess. It was delicious!

rebecca100 · 01/06/2023 19:57

Obviously had to be a Donald's!!

grunttheterrible · 01/06/2023 19:57

In advance I wanted pate on toast and a glass of Prosecco. Weirdly the wwek after giving birth is the only time I've ever completely lost my appetite so realistically it was probably a Diet Coke and a sandwich off the cart because they said I had to eat

APoppyLicks · 01/06/2023 20:03

Tea and rice crispies.

I had a lunchtime delivery, surgery straight after due to the tear, not allowed to eat in recovery, finally got food almost 48 hours after my last meal...and they did rounds right then....tea was cold, cereal soggy after they were done, but it didn't matter as we had to relocate due to ds having jaundice and needing the lights. Next meal given was tuna, I'm a vegetarian. Dh went home and made me a pack up.

Ds2 was a home birth so we ordered domino's and I ate in bed with the toddler while nursing the newborn. Bliss

inomniaparatis · 01/06/2023 20:06

I hoped for tea and toast (especially after not being allowed to eat during the induction) but ended up with a tuna sandwich and warm orange juice because it was midnight and that was the only thing left. Disappointed doesn't even cover it!

ElisMum9397 · 01/06/2023 20:08

I had tea and toast in the hospital. Mum sent me delicious food from home including a home made chocolate/coffee & coconut rolls, and a delicious omelette and cheese baguette and fruit.

When I went home after 2 days, she made me beef and veg soup, and (I know some people don't like this) liver pate on sourdough bread! Super nutritious for postpartum. They sound fancy but they really aren't. Pretty cheap meals but nutritious 😅

Combination of mums and dads culture!

Mum is Eastern European and the soup is a very healing soup. You need all your fluids. We eat it when we get a cold. My North African side is the "liver" part. Even after my period I was always told to eat liver and drink grape juice- helps with recovering iron levels.

YoSof · 01/06/2023 20:10

The tea and toast in hospital after giving birth was the best meal I’ve ever had!

Once home, pate, cured meats, baked cheese and a glass of Prosecco!

Jaberwockky · 01/06/2023 20:16

Chocolate M&S hot cross buns post c-section.

It ended with one of those lovely cardboard pots and me vomiting 😁 I don’t recommend them.

soundsys · 01/06/2023 20:17

Takeaway curry :) i might have insisted DH phone and order it before we phoned our parents to let them know the baby had arrived!

(Home birth, by the time the midwives left it was close to 8pm and the only thing I'd eaten was a mouthful of bagel 12 hours previously so I was HUNGRY!)

Yvetty · 01/06/2023 20:18

A curry! (Home birth.)

Yvetty · 01/06/2023 20:18

Snap!

YouAndMeAndThem · 01/06/2023 20:25

1st time had a long labour and delivery, I had eaten or drunk nothing in 24 hours except some Lucozade sport (can't even drink it again!). Didn't even realise I was hungry until they brought my husband and I a PILE of white buttered toast and a teapot. My husband was in shock (lol) and had no appetite, so I must have eaten about 6 slices, and a gallon of tea! Best thing ever.

2nd time had an elective section, and I had a chicken mayo sandwich and orange squash as I was late back to the ward after a bleed, and they had ran out of bread and milk 🤣 my husband brought me in a McDonald's breakfast the next day, it was fab!

zoopigi · 01/06/2023 20:26

Tea and toast with my first in the UK, fabulous brie and turkey ham baguette with my second in cyprus

roasalie · 01/06/2023 21:05

Tea toast here too.

But was also downing lots of prune juice to brace myself for that first poo.

Dominoes pizza once home after all of mine.

cocksstrideintheevening · 01/06/2023 21:11

Cold tinned ravioli with a limp attempt at salad. I didn't actually eat that and sent DH out for a McDs.
