What was the first thing you felt like eating or drinking once you had delivered your baby?
Also, which foods would you recommend to help you recover from labour? About to be FTM and I'm just curious for people's recommendations for food/drink as part of recovery after labour?

Thanks 🙂

I got a yoghurt and a glass of squash 15 hours after I gave birth. That's all they had, they'd "forgotten" to feed me the evening my kid was born. I hadn't eaten for 4 days by that point. I was less than amused.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 01/06/2023 14:25

Yes tea & toast in the ward.

I can't remember much about what I ate once I got home. I do remember trying to open a tub of tomato soup using only one hand and spilling the whole lot on the kitchen floor. That pretty much sums up my performance as a mother ever since 😅

Dd was born at 6.45am and the first thing I ate after her birth was my evening meal, I'd had a big bleed and they were keeping me nil by mouth as I may have needed surgery, I did have a drip with fluids of some sort, and I only ate the jelly and fruit as the main meal was awful, totally inedible! Dp had gone home to get showered and changed and I couldn't even text him as it was 20years ago when mobile phones weren't allowed in hospitals and visiting was much stricter.

Ds was born at 1.30am and I had breakfast at about 7.30, a cup of tea and a roll and butter, the most memorable part of it was the staff laying it out on the wee communal table by the window in the ward and encouraging us new mums to go sit at the table and eat together, my stitches on that cold hard chair were not doing that!

Toast and a cup of apple juice after DD1. After DD2 I was so weak I had to force myself to eat the bowl of rice crispies they brought round. Lucozade sport was my friend for drinks.
When we left the hospital we stopped off at subway (DD1) and McDonald's (DD2) 😂

ohhollyfred · 01/06/2023 16:55

A whole bag of jelly babies in about a minute which my husband fed 😂

Then a jacket potato with cheese and beans a pizza and meatballs spaghetti.... however I have HG in my pregnancies and don't/can't eat until the placenta is out so I had a lot of making up to do!

A can of full fat coke and a lamb korai, brought in by my eldest for the most recent

GoalShooter · 01/06/2023 16:59

DH went out to get supplies during my first labour and came back with a big bag of satsumas (I think they were on special offer). After I'd had the baby I munched my way through several of them.

HIGHLY recommended. My first post labour poo was nice and soft (sorry for the TMI) which was far less traumatic for my poor stitched up nether regions!

Findyourneutralspace · 01/06/2023 16:59

First baby, I totally forgot about eating until a HCA knocked on my door with a roast dinner and suddenly I realised I was STARVING. It was the best meal of my life!

Second (homebirth) MIL asked me what I wanted. I’d been fancying beans on toast all day, from being in labour. She burnt the bloody toast. So disappointing. She made up for it with a spag bol later though.

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 01/06/2023 17:03

After VB I had the classic tea and toast with jam / marmalade. It tasted amazing as well

I actually don't remember what I had after CS... I think I had to wait for a bit before I could eat. DH went to McDonald's and the nurse looking after me told him off for being unhealthy. He's a skinny wee thing so it wasn't fat shaming either, she just said he should be making a healthier choice. Made me laugh evilly as I couldn't have the McDonald's

MintJulia · 01/06/2023 17:03

Lemon barley water and two Panadol 🙂

Murpe · 01/06/2023 17:09

The Mumsnet banana date flapjack recipe - I took them in with me as I thought they would be sustaining if I had a long labour, but funnily enough, it turned out eating during was not a priority. I remember the midwife snacking on them too. I was never offered tea and toast!

Bookendortwo · 01/06/2023 17:12

Tea and toast both times. I'd been sick everyday of pregnancy and not enjoyed food do it was hhe best meal ever. Followed by several days of awful hospital food. The first home vookdd meal with dc1 was pie and mash, dt was shepherd's pie. Things I pre cooked and frozen which tasted amazing and no effort.

Anoushkaka · 01/06/2023 17:15

Can't remember on my first two. My third I had a kit kat and pringles.

Fridaysgirl17 · 01/06/2023 17:19

Tea & toast on both but on my second they included biscuits, marmalade & a cup of coffee with sugar I had GD & it was heavenly.

maryberryslayers · 01/06/2023 17:32

DC 1 Tea and toast, lovely but I was sick a few minutes later.

Tea and 3 Bourbon biscuits in a little packet from the hospital. They are my favourite and were heavenly.

Babdoc · 01/06/2023 17:37

Tea and toast in hospital, then went straight home and DH gave me a lovely fillet steak, new potatoes, broccoli, then fresh brambles and cream.

GellerYeller · 01/06/2023 17:43

Coffee and toast with number 1, number 2 was born at night and I don’t remember being fed! I do remember craving Mars Bars, full fat cola and Coco Pops, not stuff I normally consume, so it must have been a breast feeding thing?

margegunderson · 01/06/2023 17:45

Bacon and (runny) egg sarnie

MuddaUdders · 01/06/2023 17:51

Straight after birth, I was offered a cuppa tea at the hospital with some sugar (I had GD and was on a restricted diet in my third trimester). I had a chicken curry (hospital food) for my dinner. I was so happy! Finally able to eat and drink "what I like" without having to worry about how it'll affect my bump or my blood sugar levels.

At home, I was on a strict healthy diet. Fresh meat, fish, rice, vegetables, soup broths, fruit. Also plenty of water and I like to drink coconut water too. I'm still holding off the caffeinated drinks.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/06/2023 17:54

Hospital toast and a plastic cup of black tea. Best thing I'd ever put in my mouth.

ChattermaxFromBluey · 01/06/2023 18:56

Tea & Toast in hospital

Standout meal a few days later was a big beef stew with loads of veg, mash & gravy in a giant Yorkshire. I still dream about how nice that was.

jeepjeep4 · 01/06/2023 18:59

Tea and toast then (gross I know) but a red bull as I'd been wanting one my whole pregnancy and couldn't die to the caffeine (and other junk in them). Then I had a jacket potato with cheese on the ward. Dominoes pizza first night home.

LubaLuca · 01/06/2023 19:00

Standard hospital weak tea and toast smothered in margarine. Wouldn't pass my lips normally, but happily put it away without thought after each birth.

crtips · 01/06/2023 19:00

Probably toast straight after (don't remember), but the next day in hospital my lovely thoughtful in-laws brought me Champagne and a massive slab of unpasteurised blue cheese and crackers.

BenjiBungee · 01/06/2023 19:10

Tea & toast (think there was soup as well one time) or tea & a sandwich (middle of the night, they kept some on the ward in the fridge for overnight births), after each birth, in delivery suite or postnatal ward, and then the next proper meal when it arrived (in hospital, not discharged within 6 hours like). That's what there was an I hadn't taken in anything else much specifically other than some things such as dextrose tablets, juice and biscuits to keep me going during the births which as they weren't long births weren't needed. We had excellent self-service breakfasts, decent enough hot lunch and dinner with a sandwich alternative at each, self-service drinks, and then a sandwich trolley at 10pm on the postnatal ward, when and where I gave birth. And didn't necessarily go home within a few hours in those days.

I was ravenous but wouldn't have been able to stomach a full meal straight away.
