Baby gone from measuring small to big.

Hi all, I had my 28 weeks scan which I was told baby was measuring a little small and estimated at 2lb6 and on the 10th percentile.
I had a growth scan today 3 weeks later, at 30+6 and baby has made a huge jump and now estimated weight is 3lb13 and on the 43.2 percentile.
i had a hbac1 and fasting glucose at 26 weeks which was all normal, but the concern now is with the large gain in such a small period, hasn’t anyone got any experience with this at all?
im not stressed as the midwife said she would rather a chunky baby than one that is small, and if baby grows bigger then there’s options such as early induction etc as I want to avoid a section.
Thanks.

Only that growth scans are notoriously inaccurate and you should take them with a pinch of salt

I wouldn't go changing my birth plans based on them to be quite honest

I had a growth scan at 28 weeks where baby measured 2lb7 and then was 3lb8 at my 31week scan. They seemed pleased with the jump and didn’t mention any concerns… I am having another growth scan tomorrow for 34 weeks so will be interesting to see how much baby has grown. I have heard there’s questionability about the accuracy of growth scans though!

Anonymoususer456 · 25/05/2023 21:17

Yes definitely! I know they can be completely inaccurate. They reckoned my first would be 8-9lb she was 7lb13 @Namechangedforthis60 Hope your scan goes well. @RedRobyn2021 Not changing my birth plans at all, I’m just worried they are going to push me towards a section when I have already stated very clearly that I will not have one unless needed. Just wondered if anyone else had the estimated jump and what advice they were given.

HBA1C and fasting glucose won't show you much. Mine were both fine! Well within normal range. Glucose tolerance test is the gold standard test. My baby was small due to Gestational diabetes.
Are you getting another growth scan? I would just keep doing what your doing. First one might have been a fluke!
My growth scans were accurate but I know people who have had growth scans and they are way off.

Anonymoususer456 · 25/05/2023 21:34

@MoserRothOrangeandAlmond I have a consultation review tomorrow to decide wether I have a scan in 2 or 4 weeks.
I didn’t have the GTT as with my first it made me so Poorly I couldn’t stand going through it again.
im just done with pregnancy 😂

I had regular growth scans because of gestational diabetes (diet controlled), we had a jump too where induction was discussed.
Baby jumped from the 40th centile to the 70th within a few weeks.
She then jumped back down from the 70th to the 50th at the next scan!

The consultant also pushed c-section for me but I stood on and said that unless absolutely needed id prefer a vaginal birth, they did want me induced at 38 weeks but that was because of the slowed growth of baby.

They estimated baby to be around 8lbs based on the scans, she was born a tiny 5lbs at 38+4!
I had started dilating alone, was around 4cm and the consultant broke my waters as they were bulging and a very quick labour meant baby was with us 6 hours later 😅
She was also actually on the 2nd centile and not the 50th/60th predicted!

Hi OP

I was told baby was measuring big and long until my 38 week growth scan when they decided that she was actually only estimated 6lb.

I had her at 39 weeks and she was 5lb 15oz so they were right at the very last scan but all of the rest before was completely inaccurate.

I'm sure everything is fine ☺️ they are notoriously inaccurate.

Best wishes x

Also I was induced at 39 weeks and was discharged from hospital the within 36 hours x

Hi thank you @elm26 and @essynemo
baby has also gone from head down to transverse so hoping she moves back to head down!

Why are you having serial growth scans?

Allosaur · 27/05/2023 08:08

Hi OP, I had the same experience. Her AC went from 7th percentile to 72nd in about a month. Went from very small to above average! Test for GD was normal. I did up my vit C and protein a lot in that month which I read can help with growth. She's now settled about average :)

YukoandHiro · 27/05/2023 08:09

Ask them to do oral glucose challenge, or repeat it if you had it before. I wasn't diagnosed with gestational diabetes til 34 weeks despite symptoms all along and passing earlier tests/challenges

Anonymoususer456 · 27/05/2023 19:47

@NotAnAngelOrAHero originally as baby was measuring on 10th percentile. Now it’s to watch baby’s growth as they went from 10th percentile to 43.2 percentile in 3 weeks.

@NotAnAngelOrAHero and also baby is in the transverse position rather than head down
