Pregnancy after LLETZ?

worriedmumma24 · 25/05/2023 20:23

Hello,

I have recently found out I am pregnant, 6 months after having 12mm of my cervix removed after LLETZ. I am reading online that anything over 10mm can carry a risk?

Has anybody else been through similar and not had any problems?

I have not been through this but I used to work in this area. It can increase chance of miscarriage but if you are worried contact gynae or early pregnancy unit if you get pain and bleeding but it may not have any issue.

Yes, I have been through similar and had 2 successful pregnancies. I mentioned LLETZ during my midwife booking appointments and was monitored throughout my pregnancies. You will have your cervix length measured and if it shortens too much, you will be offered a stitch.

Yes, had my cervix measured at 20 weeks and a stitch put in. All fine and DS born at 38 weeks a week after the stitch came out.

It's luck really though, my friend had 2 lletz, more removed and was fine in pregnancy. The key thing is to make sure your midwife is aware so you're booked in for monitoring.

worriedmumma24 · 25/05/2023 21:09

Thank you for your responses - I'll be sure to tell my midwife. Glad everything went well for you both. Do you mind me asking how much you had removed? @WutheringMights @Mufflette x

I had 11mm removed @worriedmumma24

It was all I could think about until my 20 week scan when they took the measurement. My cervix length was fine and it felt so reassuring.

They don't tend to measure it before 5 months so it does feel like an age! I can only assume miscarriage becomes more of a risk as the baby grows and starts pushing down on your cervix. Until then, bubs is small enough to not cause any bother.

Mufflette · 25/05/2023 21:35

I think I had 14mm removed. But it becomes more about how much your cervix shortens in pregnancy - it could be that is stays a stable length with no issues, fingers crossed that's the case for you!

I will say though, the midwife will refer you for the extra scan but in my experience won't have much knowledge of the subject. If it's found that you do have a shorter cervix you'll see a consultant too - so don't be alarmed if you ask your midwife and they don't have much info beyond the initial referral.

Hi op, I had 2 lletz treatments a month apart after my first smear( then colposcopy)detected stage 1a1 cervical cancer.
i was monitored throughout my pregnancy (cervix measured and scanned every 2 weeks from 17 to 32 weeks) as risk for premature birth was higher but I ended up going 9 days past my due date. I had absolutely no issues whatsoever.

worriedmumma24 · 26/05/2023 08:07

Thank you all so much for your responses. I now know what to expect :) x

I had 15mm removed. With my second I had a scan at 16 weeks and 24 weeks to measure the cervix. Neither showed any change or shortening and she was born at 40+2.

Now pregnant with my third and had a scan at 16 weeks which was all fine and having another at 22 weeks to make sure there’s no change. If they see it shortening they may put a stitch in to stop premature labour but they do this all the time and apparently it’s not very common to have the stitch in. It’s just a precaution.

Lwrenagain · 26/05/2023 16:00

I went for my cervix measuring after having a fair amount lobbed off and I didn't need the stitch, but they said if I needed it it was pretty straightforward.
I spoke to a consultant before trying again and he said often the cervix grows back anyway.

Hi everyone,
I had a LLETZ procedure last week and had 18mm removed. I’m just wondering about anyone else’s experience with post LLETZ pregnancies (Particularly with larger excisions like mine?) tysm

PickledScrump · 24/07/2023 19:15

@Doveydove hi, I’m on my third pregnancy but second post Lletz. Both have been absolutely fine. You’ll get extra scans from 16 weeks to check your cervix but as long as there’s no shortening you’ll get put on low risk. I went to 40+2 with my last one and had an amazing water birth. Hopefully have the same this time. If they do find any shortening then they can put a small stitch in your cervix to keep it closed. When you have the scans they’ll also give you a quick look at baby so it’s nice to get an extra little look

worriedmumma24 · 24/07/2023 21:02

@PickledScrump hey! Do cervix scans hurt - what is involved please? I've just had a date through for mine but not sure what to expect!

PickledScrump · 24/07/2023 21:07

@worriedmumma24 no they don’t hurt. They have a small probe which they put a condom and lube on which they insert. It doesn’t go in very far, doesn’t actually touch the cervix, they just take some measurements on their screen , they’ll likely have the big screen off for that bit. It doesn’t take long. Then they will do an abdominal scan so you can see your baby which is always nice.

ScoutingMumma · 25/07/2023 01:08

Hi, how did people find out how much they’d had removed please? I was never told. Thank you.

graygoose · 25/07/2023 02:00

Hi I had a LLETZ and was never told how much was removed. I told my doctor and they measured my cervix at 16 weeks and will measure again at my 20 week scan. All was fine at 16 weeks and they said if all looks ok at 20 weeks no need to measure again. Even if it’s short, like other ladies have said you can get a stitch to sort it out. Good luck!

PickledScrump · 25/07/2023 05:40

@ScoutingMumma i was never told either, I only know as this time it’s on my pregnancy notes on badger app. It’ll flag up at your booking appointment if it’s something that needs further investigation, you can always ask them there.

worriedmumma24 · 25/07/2023 10:10

@ScoutingMumma I was told via a letter after my procedure, when they confirmed they had got all the margins etc. if you call your gp im sure it will be on file somewhere? x

I wasn't told how much until I made a subject access request for my medical records, had 15mm removed. I got fortnightly scans from 14 weeks and an emergency stitch at 22 weeks.

ScoutingMumma · 27/07/2023 17:48

Thank you ladies, LLETZ was only recent and so my husband and I are not TTC just yet, but thank you for sharing information and preparing us for what is to come. I wasn’t told in advance or during the appointment what to expect either.
