Bleeding and 8 hour flight shortly

Hello

I am about 4-5 weeks pregnant (last period started 17th April, 31 day cycle). Tested positive 8 days ago.

I've just woken up to light bleeding, blood discharge in my knickers and blood when I went to the toilet. It's reddish brown. I'm due to fly to Washington in 5 hours which is an 8 hour flight for work. I'm scared what am I supposed to do. I have twinging left sided pain which I've had for the past week so I'm obviously worried of an ectopic or general miscarriage.

I'm so sorry OP, I remember commenting on your previous thread. The exact same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. I got positive tests, then cramping and bleeding, sent to EPU by GP for suspected ectopic, but negative test at the EPU. The tests they use in the hospitals are much less sensitive than the home pregnancy tests. Home tests can detect as little as 6 mIU HCG, whereas at the hospital their tests are much weaker at about 25mIU. And they won't be using your first morning urine which means the hormones are less concentrated.

This is all a really long winded way of saying you absolutely were pregnant and you have every right to grieve at this loss. I did. A lot. I'm really shocked and angry on your behalf that they wrote you weren't pregnant. Every loss, no matter how early, matters.

Whether you now go to DC is entirely up to you of course, no right or wrong. Everyone deals with this differently. Sending you lots of hugs 💛💛

I’m so sorry.

I’ve had two ectopics, one ruptured, and never had any pain other than fainting and puking. Like a PP, I only survived due to “lucky” circumstances of being in hospital when it happened and not home alone. That doctor was dangerous telling you that, and I’m sorry it’s going to make things hard for you.

I hope you are doing okay op. I'm sorry if I caused any unnecessary fear or worry for you.

Just to update - home pregnancy test also now says "not pregnant". Just shocked that your blood levels can go from positive to completely negative in 48 hours. The test I did on Friday was positive and that was a first response rapid test apparently has a threshold of 100ml. Then everything negative Sunday morning.
The A&E doctor said even if it had been an ectopic, the risk to my health from rupture would have been nil between 4-5 weeks and it is more 7-8 weeks that you have to worry. So unfortunately I would have always been able to get on that flight.
The consequences of the timing of this have been awful. I missed the work trip, had to tell my boss and family (due to missing the trip) so now they all know we have been trying when I had hoped to keep it private. I feel stupid like all this drama for basically a period! I know it was a miscarriage but my letter from A&E says I was never pregnant and it was just my period. The whole thing has been awful. I hope in a few weeks I will feel like it's in the past and can move on.

Don’t feel stupid. These MCs can be very traumatic and the pain very confusing, especially if you haven’t experienced severe period pain before.

You listened to your body and made the best decisions you could with the information you had at the time. That is absolutely NOT something to feel stupid about.

Remember your hormones are currently having a house party so you’ll feel extra sensitive. Upside is I believe you are likely more fertile in the few months after an MC (which this was, albeit a chemical). Good luck TTC and remember you don’t have to discuss it with anyone further if you don’t want to.

💐

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/05/2023 13:40

So if you had not done a test you would have thought it was a period, which is basically was, and would have gone ahead with the trip?

Really bad timing.

Inkypot · 23/05/2023 13:44

Aw @User1815 what a hell of a weekend you've had.
I really feel for you cos ok now you know you could of got on the flight but at the time you didn't know that. You didn't really have a choice so you did the right thing in the moment with the knowledge and resources you had at the time.
It is awful how blunt the letter is worded and frankly it's pretty unfair. You were pregnant, you know you were. To imply you never were isn't helpful to you.

Sorry you're having to go through this experience but I really do believe you did the right thing for you at that time. That's all anyone could do and anyone worth their salt will be able to see that.

I did a few tests over the course of a week, including FRER, clear blue words, clear blue how many weeks... then the last test being Friday a FR rapid test as I was interested to see how the line had darkened. So unfortunately I had spent a whole week thinking I was pregnant.

@Inkypot and @HRTSavedMyHusband thank you so much, that is helpful to me Flowers

@User1815 I feel for you, I had a chemical pregnancy in March this year. Had positive tests, clearblue digitals, internet cheapies and FRER all showing positive. Started bleeding a few days later and went to EPU, they confirmed miscarriage/chemical pregnancy. It's a rollercoaster, I'm out the other side now and back trying again but always here for a chat if you need to x

ringsaglitter · 23/05/2023 15:01

It's good not to do pregnancy tests early - like before or just around your period as these chemical pregnancies will show up, often more than once.

It's actually a good sign - it shows you and your partner are both fertile, compatible, and your body just sifted through probably a chromosomal abnormality.

Don't beat yourself up about yesterday, think of this as indicative that you can, and likely will, have a successful pregnancy in the future. Be easy on yourself tonight. x

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/05/2023 15:06

Sorry it happened to you. Very unfortunate chain of events. Hope you're feeling better about it all soon.

TokyoSushi · 23/05/2023 15:09

Oh OP that's really rubbish, so sorry Flowers

StartupRepair · 23/05/2023 22:26

Be gentle with yourself OP. You did the right thing.
