Bleeding and 8 hour flight shortly

Hello

I am about 4-5 weeks pregnant (last period started 17th April, 31 day cycle). Tested positive 8 days ago.

I've just woken up to light bleeding, blood discharge in my knickers and blood when I went to the toilet. It's reddish brown. I'm due to fly to Washington in 5 hours which is an 8 hour flight for work. I'm scared what am I supposed to do. I have twinging left sided pain which I've had for the past week so I'm obviously worried of an ectopic or general miscarriage.

Oh I am so sorry OP. Flowers

I have had an ectopic. You are doing the right thing getting checked.

Pollywoddles · 21/05/2023 10:54

I’ve flown with a chemical, just make sure you have lots of thick pads. However if your blood comes back positive for hCG then they’ll probably want to restart in a couple of days to see what’s happening because they wouldn’t be able to rule out ectopic.

User1815 · 21/05/2023 10:55

Bloods have come back and I'm not pregnant. Can't believe it! They say all my tests were wrong

100% your tests were right but you miscarried and your hormones have now come back down to show not pregnant would be my guess.

im so sorry for your loss, even a chemical pregnancy (I think classed before 6 weeks) is still a loss, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

Nothingisblackandwhite · 21/05/2023 10:59

You quer emit wrong , you are having a chemical pregnancy, that vê had it twice . I’m truly sorry . Go ahead n your flightier you can , just out chemicals it’s just like a normal period really . Doesn’t mean man you won’t get pregnant again and other I had my daughter after 2 chemicals . Hugs

euff · 21/05/2023 11:01

So sorry op, hope they are treating you well.

ringsaglitter · 21/05/2023 11:01

If you're just 4 to 5 weeks, it's considered a chemical pregnancy, and you just treat it like a late period. I had one a few months ago. Sending you hugs. x

CharlotteRose90 · 21/05/2023 11:01

I’m so sorry for your loss. If you’re up to it and the hospital agree then get on a later flight and go. It might help clear your mind as I’m sure you’ll have lots of questions etc in there at the moment. Might be a good distraction.

2bazookas · 21/05/2023 11:05

Hope you've got travel insurance in case you need medical care in USA.

User1815 · 21/05/2023 11:10

They have done a letter for me for my insurance but it says I was unlikely I was ever pregnant is this going to cause issues?

I'm so sorry for your loss. As others are saying, you were not wrong and your tests were not wrong. It's a very early loss and still as valid.
Lots of love to you today. Do what feels right for you. Big hugs.

Melusina123 · 21/05/2023 11:43

@User1815 You've been through a lot today and had a lot of advice so I just wanted to drop in and say I had the same experience of testing positive at home and negative at the hospital after some bleeding and they suggested maybe it was just my period (!!). If you tested positive at home, you WERE pregnant, don't let anyone make you feel otherwise.

Sadly early miscarriages are common and it can mean your HCG drops below the level the hospital tests detect. I spoke to my GP after it happened to me and she said A&Es are infamously bad at dealing with women experiencing early pregnancy complications and MCs. I'm sorry you had this experience. ❤️

TheShellBeach · 21/05/2023 11:47

You were pregnant, OP, but it was a chemical pregnancy, and you've now had a miscarriage.
I'm so sorry.

Are you sure - it said I didn't need to tell them I am pregnant. I did try to add it as a medical condition

No most insurance companies have a list of conditions you don't need to tell them about. Whilst can't be 100% I would imagine early pregnancy is one of them....

Ellie450 · 21/05/2023 12:51

Kindly, as the doctors have confirmed you are just starting a period. If your last period was only April 17th and you usually have a 31 day cycle you wouldn’t be 4-5 weeks because you don’t ovulate immediately after your period. At ~3 weeks you likely wouldn’t have any idea if there was an ectopic, so I’m sorry people got you so worried on that front. See if you can make a later flight and don’t worry or beat yourself up. DC is an amazing city. 💐

GoodChat · 21/05/2023 12:55

I'm sorry OP, I hope you're ok

husbandcallsmepickle · 21/05/2023 13:00

@Ellie450 that's not how pregnancy weeks work. You calculate from your last period, not ovulation.

ringsaglitter · 21/05/2023 13:01

@Ellie450 No, she's right, you count from the 1st day of your period, not from ovulation. That would be 5 weeks tomorrow. The two weeks of pre- pregnancy (where there's of course no baby) are actually counted for convenience purposes

Do not go to the US if you're suffering a potential or suspected miscarriage. Women are being prosecuted for spontaneous miscarriage.

Please also seek medical advice because even at 5/6 weeks a miscarriage can be very uncomfortable. I had mine abroad and flooded for two days - you'll need large pads.

Seriously? A miscarriage is completely uncontrollable! How on earth are they being prosecuted for this????

You use your menstrual cycle dates to count weeks of pregnancy, not ovulation.

Pain in the side in any stage of early pregnancy needs checking. Nobody worried the OP unnecessarily.

shammalammadingdong · 21/05/2023 13:35

ladykale · 21/05/2023 07:50

An ectopic pregnancy can kill you if stuck in the air without medical treatment I thought? Bleeding isn't the issue but the pain is!

Not at 4-5 weeks. It's only dangerous later on with the risk of rupture etc.

Not that OP has said any symptom that would indicate an ectopic anyway.

There is no need for dr or A&E or anything here given the info given. OP may not want to fly in case it is a m/c, but at such an early stage there is unlikely to be anything physically beyond a slightly heavier period.

shammalammadingdong · 21/05/2023 13:37

Sorry, only some of the updates were showing.

It's a chemical pregnancy, unfortunately. Very common.
