Bleeding and 8 hour flight shortly

Hello

I am about 4-5 weeks pregnant (last period started 17th April, 31 day cycle). Tested positive 8 days ago.

I've just woken up to light bleeding, blood discharge in my knickers and blood when I went to the toilet. It's reddish brown. I'm due to fly to Washington in 5 hours which is an 8 hour flight for work. I'm scared what am I supposed to do. I have twinging left sided pain which I've had for the past week so I'm obviously worried of an ectopic or general miscarriage.

@HRTSavedMyHusband this is what worries me that going to hospital is going to be a waste of time. But I'm scared it's an ectopic and would like to deal with it asap if it is,

If you didn't tell your travel insurance about the positive pregnancy test as soon as you found out, you won't be insured anyway, so do bear that in mind.
So sorry to give you something else to worry about, but insurers are very strict and no way should anyone travel, particularly to USA, without insurance.

@Winniewoooooooo good point thank you do I call them? Would they help me reschedule if I'm fine? I will fly if it's not an ectopic with a later flight

I'd ring them. Something to do whilst your waiting 😊

Does your company book through an agency? When I've had to move flights last min the agency has made all the arrangements at minimal cost?

It must be very stressful. But you're doing the right thing. Xx

Don't go on the flight. Work can wait. Your health cannot.

You don't want to be miscarrying on a flight, nor in another country away from home.

It might be implantation bleeding and cramps. I remember having them around a similar time and had this constant dull ache for a few days.

Either way, be at home. Don't take the risk. Work will have to suck it up. Tell them you've come down with vomiting and diarrhoea if you'd rather they didn't know the real reason.

This. Keeping things crossed for you.xx

Are you sure - it said I didn't need to tell them I am pregnant. I did try to add it as a medical condition

If you told them it is fine. Keep them in the loop.

chickawhoo · 21/05/2023 08:43

I know people are saying they miscarried and you're best keeping busy etc, but it seems they're forgetting you'd be in a pressurised cabin, unable to just land at random, with strangers all around you and only work colleagues at the other end.
No work trip is worth more than your baby, nothing is worth more than your baby.
Regardless if it's a MC, ectopic or implantation, your baby and your body are telling you to put the trip off and deal with you and baby. You don't have to be superwoman fleeing from hospital to plane to US with baby on board. Apply a little sense and compassion and realise that the thing that can be taken out the situation is work so be seen at the hospital, rest for the day, get a sick note if need be for work, do not jump onto a flight today/tonight.

This isn’t true actually. Insurers don’t count pregnancy as “medical condition”. You would only need to inform them of medical issues related to pregnancy. For example gestational diabetes.

Sorry meant to quote PP who advised you need to update your travel insurance.

Fedupmum21 · 21/05/2023 08:48

OP you don’t need to tell travel insurance that you are pregnant when you found out as it isn’t a medical condition.

MadeForThis · 21/05/2023 08:49

Travel insurance don't need to know about pregnancy

euff · 21/05/2023 08:53

I did not inform my insurance I was pregnant when I flew. There is no need at early stage if no medical concerns at time of flying. Insurance paid for my surgery, hospital stay and accommodation for my partner and child whilst in was in hospital and for our accommodation from then til our flight home.

Theysoughtitwiththimbles · 21/05/2023 08:53

Someone may have said this, but airlines can be very understanding anc if you call them and explain what’s happened, they might just move you to a later flight. Totally different situation but I get panic attacks and have missed a few flights due to this, and the bigger airlines (ie, not Ryanair!) have been amazing at letting me take a later flight.

NurseEssie · 21/05/2023 08:54

I had the same at 5 weeks. I cancelled my Holliday (25 hours of travel though).

But now the baby is here and fine - I wish I went on that bloody holiday cos no chance of travelling with a baby that far! For a long long time.

greenacrylicpaint · 21/05/2023 09:00

If you didn't tell your travel insurance about the positive pregnancy test as soon as you found out, you won't be insured anyway,

as the OP is travelling for work, her work's insurance is covering the trip. those insurances work differently than individual policies.
you still would need to tell work if you go, though.

WaltzingWaters · 21/05/2023 09:00

As others have said, no need to tell your insurance of pregnancy unless you have issues related to the pregnancy. I went on holiday at 28 weeks and even then they said they didn’t need to know provided there were no additional factors (like gestational diabetes).

But, I wouldn’t fly until ectopic is ruled out. And if you can, I’d just miss the trip. If it is a miscarriage it can be very hard emotionally and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to focus on a work trip whilst it happened.

best of luck, hope everything is okay.

ittakes2 · 21/05/2023 09:03

Your left side pain worries me I think you need to get checked for an ectopic pregnancy but I am not experience with this.

endofthelinefinally · 21/05/2023 09:25

I stand corrected. Sorry to have worried you OP.
I hope you are ok.

dottiedodah · 21/05/2023 09:39

I think it is not worth the risk TBH. 111 have given good advice to you.Hope you get on OK .You are in the right place OP!

User1815 · 21/05/2023 09:42

My urine test has come back negative for pregnancy (I had taken about 10 tests between last week and Friday so I know I was pregnant)

Waiting on blood results

OP posts:
ClairDeLaLune · 21/05/2023 09:43

If you think it might be ectopic you absolutely need to get that checked out before you fly. If you don’t, and it is, it could be very bad indeed.

User1815 · 21/05/2023 09:44

When the doctor felt my stomach because I didn't find it painful he thought an ectopic was unlikely

Waiting on blood results

Oh love, my heart goes out to you. What a day you're having and it's not even 10am.
I hope you have clear answers soon and that you have support at home for cuddles which I think you might need either way regardless of whatever answer you're given. Remember the urine tests in hospital aren't always that sensitive so blood tests is a good idea.
Take it they're testing the blood for hcg and not just full blood count tests? Hope it goes ok.

7eleven · 21/05/2023 09:50

Oh OP. It’s time to cancel the trip, go home when you can and get on the sofa. Hopefully the urine test was wrong, but if it sadly wasn’t, you can’t possibly go through a miscarriage on a plane and you certainly can’t work. Xxx
