Can soft cucumber make you ill??

Hello everyone,

So I just made a Greek salad and a tzatziki for dinner. Washed the cucumber, it looked perfectly fine, cut it up, ate half of it and then noticed a sour taste and soft texture.
the cucumber does not have any exterior signs of being off, from the outside it’s relatively firm, dark green, no slime or spots/mold. But the taste is pretty sour and it’s not really crispy. It’s starting to become a little “see through” on the edges…
Would you say this cucumer was off? And would I expect becoming ill? 😩

You'll be fine.

No of course not.

I hate to be the one to tell you OP, but haven't you heard about the Great Soft Cucumber Plague of 1996? It was the worst of times. I myself lost six family members, a lodger, and a much-loved guinea pig.
It would be best to get your affairs in order.

😆

Op you're not going to be ill from soft cucumber (it's going to be a long 9 months)

😂

Be glad you didn't get a hard cucumber. They'd hold you up at gunpoint and take your money.

allthewoes · 20/05/2023 20:44

It usually goes like that if you've had it near the back of the fridge and it's frozen. It won't hurt you at all.

Actually, you've got some duff info above. Stay close to the loo. Incidents from my family.

  1. My Nana had terrible diarrhoea. had to go to hospital. The police investigated my Mum, just home from college, as they thought she had poisoned her Mum. Nana owned up to eating soft cucumber from their garden in the kitchen, not to waste it.
  2. Dad had an episode, leading to his sticking a notice on the kitchen cupboard, "NO CUCUMBER!" My sister and I left it as the last thing we cleared from the house.
  3. I had one that had been badly displayed under warm lights in an M&S prepared salad. I did tell them.
  4. I had another episode later. I am now scrupulous about them not being over-ripe, even a little.
It isn't what I would call ill and I shouldn't worry. It is just an urgent need to visit the loo with very very loose, almost watery stools which empty the gut. So anything bad is gone and I shouldn't think it enters the system to affect the baby. Drink plenty of water.

Haha!! I know I’m being paranoid but I’m 7 months pregnant and have already had two stomach bugs (from my 3yo) and two cases of food poisoning. I’m soooo sick of throwing up and feeling horrible🙈
