2 week old taking 5 oz bottles!

2 week old who ironically had feeding issues and was in neonatal ward for first week of his life refusing to eat now has been taking 5oz bottles. If I give him 3 or 4 oz he will be unsettled and cries for more food, putting his fists in his mouth etc once he finishes 5 oz he’s content and falling asleep. I’ve gone from being worried he wouldn’t eat to now worrying he’s overeating!

Has anyone else’s baby drunk this much?

My baby didn't drink that much, however, the advice consistently is that your baby knows how hungry they are and let them decide. We underfed our baby when she was first born and it ended with her getting jaundice. Eating is good, it is what they need to do right now, so roll with it. Also, bottle feeding is awesome and seems like it is working well for you two. I wish you all the best.in your feeding journey!

As long as you're listening to baby and possibly pace feeding you can't overfeeding a baby! Try not to stress sounds like you have a happy and content baby there

Babies don't overeat - they're taking what they need to grow! Wouldn't concern me a bit.

Oh, also, check out the 'fed is best' groups on FB. Great, non-judgemental resource for bottle feeding.

Yep both my dc was taking that much at that age lol, moving up to 9oz lol. Both were quite big babies though so just assumed they needed more to satisfy them. Age 5 and 2 now and if anything I think they could do with gaining a bit of weight!

Are you doing paced bottle feeding?

Emmamoo89 · 20/05/2023 20:25

You can overfeed a bottle fed baby. You can't a breastfed baby.

Emmamoo89 · 20/05/2023 20:25

But you're baba may need it. Bigger babies need more.

You can't, because even if they do take too much, they just spit it back up.

This isn’t true. You can over feed a bottle fed baby.

LapinR0se · 20/05/2023 21:01

No problem. Feed your baby what he is demanding/what he needs and enjoy him

SouthLondonMum22 · 20/05/2023 21:02

If he isn't bringing it back up, I wouldn't be worried. If he's settled on 5oz bottles then that's clearly what he needs.
