Ladies I need some help! It's my birthday in a few weeks and I should be around 7 weeks, I'm not sure if I'm going to be telling family until I've had a scan however I'm going out with my mum, sisters and brothers girlfriend for my birthday to see a show and I need some excuses for not drinking that night!

Usually when I see them I'm driving so don't need to have a reason ready but what reasons have you used?

Difficult thing is they know we've been trying so if I just say I don't feel like it they may suspect and like I said I'm not sure if we are sharing before any scans 😊 quite enjoying our little secret.

You could say all the TTC has resulted in a terrible UTI and you are on antibiotics

DandelionPockets · 19/05/2023 20:26

Don't say you're on antibiotics, dead giveaway! 😂

Could you drive so can't drink?
Tell them you're not feeling well so sticking to water? Something like a sensitive stomach or headache?
On a health kick?

Anabella321 · 19/05/2023 20:28

On a health kick whilst TTC. Any advice on improving egg and sperm quality will tell you not to drink.

PaigeMatthews · 19/05/2023 20:30

Drive?

sashastuck · 19/05/2023 20:34

I second health kick whilst TTC! I didn’t drink whilst TTC so everyone got used to it after a couple of outings!

Whoisdis · 19/05/2023 20:35

I won't be driving as the show in Leeds where I live so they will be travelling from another town and wouldn't make sense. My mum doesn't drink anyway due to health complications and she has a bigger car.

Health kick for ttc may be a good one as we did drink alot less in the last few months, I've been on alcohol free for over 6 weeks before bfp!

@SquidgersMummy Haha! That's fantastic, they probably wouldn't ask any additional questions 😂

I knew antibiotics would be suggested you might as well just announce it everyone knows what that means 😂

Whoisdis · 19/05/2023 20:37

@CadburyDream - yeah my husband suggested antibiotics... I said the same, may as well just tell them then!

@sashastuck true we have been drinking alot less! Just feel with it being my birthday they may say what's the harm but I think I'm well overthinking it!

Sow the seed now about your horrendous recurrent UTI problem 😁

PickledScrump · 19/05/2023 22:04

Honestly whatever excuse you make they will probably guess. Antibiotics is basically code for pregnant. You could say health kick but if they know your TTC they’ll likely guess

sashastuck · 20/05/2023 06:58

You could say/imply you’re in the two week wait - I did this once with friends, I said “I’ve not tested but I could be” (this was true and I didn’t fall pregnant that month) but was just trying to be careful. Only thing is then, in 2 weeks they may be eagerly waiting for the update!

GreenIsle · 20/05/2023 07:03

Hi op the only option so that there is no questions or suspicion is to literally pretend you are drinking, offer to get the drinks but make sure yours is alcohol free. They won't even notice then.

coodawoodashooda · 20/05/2023 07:10

Just tell them!

MrsHsGirl · 20/05/2023 07:14

The best advice I saw on here (and have used) is not to tell anyone and just nurse a drink. If you're watching a show no one will probably notice, especially if you can keep passing it to DH for him to sneakily drink it!

strawberryFforever · 20/05/2023 08:43

Oh just tell them. Why's it a secret?

If you miscarry, hopefully you won't but wouldn't you share that heartbreak with your mum?

Whoisdis · 20/05/2023 08:55

@strawberryFforever I was wanting to let my parents know when I've had a scan and can show them, but I'm definitely umming and ahhing about telling them sooner. I think it's just so ingrained that you should wait until 12 weeks 😬

I had a girls night out last week and didn’t want anyone to know so volunteered to get all the drinks rounds saying ‘well I might as well keep paying for everything and we can split the total at the end of the night!’. That way I kept getting a tonic while they kept drinking g&t. And during the meal, I ordered another g&t but when the waitress walked off to put our order through, I caught her up and explained the situation so once again they made me a tonic only that looked the same as everyone’s g&t 👍 And the staff loved being in on the secret 😂

blahblahblah1654 · 20/05/2023 13:18

If you drink gin and tonic usually you could just have tonic water and no one would realise. Or coke etc

Imenti · 20/05/2023 13:21

The question you need to ask yourself is, if the worst happened, would you want to tell them? If it's something you think you would share with them, then there's no reason to not tell them you're pregnant now. That's the only reason to wait 12 weeks.

Congratulations!!! Xx

Whoisdis · 21/05/2023 18:06

So we saw my parents yesterday and decided to tell them 😁 was brilliant seeing their reactions so really pleased we did. Not telling husbands parents yet as his mum can't keep anything quiet and would tell the whole neighbourhood by the time we left the street 😅
