"Definitely don't look now"

I've just had my 20 week scan and the baby seems happy and healthy 🎉

We decided not to find out the sex of the baby as it's our final and we have two gorgeous boys at home and have no preference.

We let the sonographer know at the start of the scan and she told us she'd ask us to look away when she was scanning the legs so we didn't accidentally see anything. We joked that we probably wouldn't know what we were looking at anyway.

However, when the sonographer was scanning the legs she told us to look away. Then she said "unless you've changed your mind, definitely don't look now." Since then it's been on my mind that the genitals must have been very obvious and therefore likely a boy!

Am I overthinking this? I do have that tendency but also surely an untrained eye wouldn't be able to tell that easily unless it it was obvious!! 😬🙈

what are your genuine thoughts on this? (Just to say again this isn't because we have a preference, if baby is a boy I'd be overjoyed!)

That really could mean either 😁

yaboreme · 18/05/2023 15:10

Congratulations!!!

Likely a boy!! I wanted to know, husband didn't. We did the mature thing and flipped a coin, I lost!!

We told the sonographer, baby rolled over halfway through and she said "look away now!!!", husband changed his mind instantly and said tell us. It was a boy.

I don’t think you can read anything into that - DD was very clearly female at that point.

papayabread · 18/05/2023 15:13

That could mean either, remember this is the sonographer's job so to her mind it was obvious at that moment, the same way we all think our jobs/expertise are more obvious than they actually are.

Vexxa · 18/05/2023 15:13

I think you're overthinking it. With my daughter it was very obvious to me at her 20 week scan that she was a girl.

ThelastRolo20 · 18/05/2023 15:15

I accidentally saw when she tried very quickly to go over the legs bit. I did actually see for a split second (literally split second) and because of the angle it was so obviously a girl. So don't read into it. Depending on angle it can be very obvious either way!

SarahSmith2023 · 18/05/2023 15:17

I wouldn't read anything into that, honestly!

have you got names picked yet?

JumbledE · 18/05/2023 15:18

Thanks everyone. I am probably overthinking this! We found out with the boys so it feels odd to not know (but exciting!)

@SarahSmith2023 We have two girls names and two boys name and I think we will just decide when the baby arrives. 😆

I also found it really obvious I was having a girl although to be fair it was my second girl so I knew what to look for but I knew before the sonographer confirmed it was a girl.

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 18/05/2023 15:35

Not at all, very similar experience with my youngest where it was "look away now because this is very obvious". She's definitely a girl!

Blossomandbee · 18/05/2023 15:54

Not necessarily a boy, the sonographer didn't warn us to look away and we both clearly saw our baby was a girl! She was our last and was going to be surprise too Grin

CityKity · 18/05/2023 22:02

I had almost exactly the same experience at my 20 week scan so know how you feel, my mind went to ‘it’s a boy’ immediately.
I’m a FTM and have zero preference but ever since then have been utterly convinced it’s a baby boy!
I’m 30 weeks now, so will try and remember to update when baby is here to see whether I was overthinking a passing comment or not!

Jomummy1013 · 18/05/2023 22:30

I was asked to immediately look away at the 20 week scan with my youngest daughter.

OnNaturesCourse · 18/05/2023 23:04

I got told "look away now" during my 20 weeks scan with DD.

They tell you as soon as they look for the legs/bladder etc really

missally · 19/05/2023 00:10

We had a gender scan at 17 weeks and I knew kind of what I was looking for so it would have been very obvious to me. A little girl! I think they would have said it either way. They know people google things. Congratulations either way 🩷 💙

GrimDamnFanjo · 19/05/2023 00:50

I asked mine if she could tell and she said yes it was obvious.
It was actually a girl and I spent the rest of the pregnancy convinced I was having a boy!

DiscoBeat · 19/05/2023 00:59

They do so many of these scans every day that I'm certain they will say the same thing every time. And they don't want to get into trouble for not making it clear not to look if you didn't want to know, so they are very definite about not looking. I wouldn't read anything into it.

I look forward to the update!

best wishes for the birth 🌸

I know where you're coming from but I think we overthink things. She was just telling you not to look because she was scanning the 'area' and there would either have been something there or not! x

JumbledE · 29/09/2023 06:44

Well in this case I was right on the money and our beautiful baby boy was born yesterday 🥰

No idea if it was a hint or not but the moment we found out he was a boy was worth the wait!

@Florenceatemycake I had a gorgeous baby boy! Who knows if I was over thinking the comment during the 20 week scan or not, but my hunch was right anyway!
Despite being worried that the surprise would be ruined, the moment I found out he was a boy was still amazing.
