6weeks+4 pregnant measuring 5 weeks

So today I had a private scan, early not because I had anything to be concerned about but I have bad anxiety and wanted a scan just for reassurance. And now I feel that what I feared is coming true.

I had an internal scan being 6 weeks pregnant due to being able to have a better view and first thing the sonographer said to me was ‘do you have regular periods?’ In which I replied yes, I asked why and he didn’t answer which got me panicking. I asked if everything was okay and he said that he was just doing initial checks before turning on the tv screen so that I can see.

After about 3 minutes, he turned the screen on and told me I am measuring at exactly 5 weeks pregnant and showed me the pregnancy sac, yolk sac and baby. He then went on to say that there is no heartbeat and potentially I could have miscarried and baby passed at 5 weeks. He then said to take a pregnancy test in 2 weeks to see what it says? Honestly he wasn’t very comforting at all.

My friend had a silent miscarriage and the same thing had happened to her where she was told she measured a week earlier than they thought but then never grew anymore after which is so heartbreaking 💔

I rang my local hospital and Ive got an emergency scan on Saturday and safe to say I’m so scared, can this happen? Can I be a week behind to what I thought I was? I have attached a picture of my scan.

That to me doesn't look like a 5 week pregnancy. A yolk sac and baby as seen around 6 weeks.

Hello, firstly sorry you are feeling anxious, the first trimester is such an anxious time with not knowing which way your pregnancy will go.

I have 3 children and haven been pregnant 4 times. I have had early scans on all 4 pregnancies due to bleeding.

DD1 Measured perfectly at my 6 weeks 4 days scan with heartbeat
DS2 Measured 1 week behind at 6 week scan, just yolk sack seen, no heartbeat, turns out I ovulated late
DC3 Measured 10 days behind on 8 week scan, a faint heartbeat which unfortunately miscarried at 10 weeks
DS4 Was essentially a 'hole' with no yolk sac or anything at 6 weeks 4 days, I fully wrote off the pregnancy, with continued bleeding I knew the baby had no chance, fast forward 2 weeks and I had a scan to confirm miscarriage and plan which treatment either D &C or pill and low and behold my baby boy was bouncing away, I shouted out in shock!!!!

Anyways my point is early scans aren't accurate, and its hard to get an accurate measurement. Surprised your dr said that, its not helpful! I really hope your baby is fine only time will tell. Xxx

ps your scan looks normal to me for around the 6 week mark x

You might have regular periods but even if you took ovulation tests, it's impossible to know when implantation occurred. I wouldn't expect to see a baby at 5 weeks, just a yolk sac so the fact you have both I wouldn't be too concerned.

The attitude of the sonograoher at the private scan is shocking, they should have referred you to the local EPU clinic if they had concerns.

I would try and keep busy today/tomorrow until your scan on Saturday.

I had an early scan due to bleeding and it is torture waiting for a scan but I just reminded myself that worrying was not going to change anything and I had absolutely no control over what was happening in my uterus and kept busy as best I could. They scanned me and I was around 5 weeks (yolk sac) and then they scanned me the following week and I had yolk sac, baby and heartbeat.

Try not to worry- there’s a very good chance you’re just a bit too early. I had a MMC and at your stage they couldn’t see a yolk sac or an embryo so you’re definitely in a stronger position that we were. I agree with pp that your scan looks more advanced than a 5 week gestation. Very best of luck.

Update: If I stayed really really still, you could see a heartbeat 💗 they said less than 6 weeks but you could see that tiny flicker! Safe to say I’m so relieved. Thank you everyone who replied💗

Hi, just jumping on this as it’s a recent one! Really glad things worked out for you @Bethandfreddie. I had a private early scan yesterday at what was 6w4d from LMP. He said he could only see three empty/fluid filled areas, measuring 3mm, 5mm and 5.4mm. Likely not progressing as it should especially as my position test was three weeks ago. The scan results actual gestational age is 5w0d. I didn’t test LH this month so not 100% sure of ovulation date and cycle varies 26-29 days (usually 27). Had strong positive on FRER at what I thought was 10 DPO and got a dye stealer at 5w and yesterday after scan as well. Have had some cramping but no bleeding. Had an early miscarriage over Xmas hence the worry and early scan. Have to ring in the morning with test result and will be referred to hospital I guess. Can anyone share a glimmer of hope? Xx

Bless you it’s such an awful wait! I really know it all too well and I just feel for you. It’s hard to know until you have your next scan, they normally say wait until 8 weeks (from last period) to really know. From my experience 3 out of 4 times it was okay. 2 of my children had very unlikely good outcomes as I was measuring so behind but lo and behold they are here! It was only 1 child that measured correctly with heartbeat at 6w 4 days. And 1 that miscarried. No bleeding is good and I always have a tonne of cramps early on, it’s in-nerving but it can mean everything is going well! Do let us know how you get on. Sending lots of strength to you, be kind to yourself watch something nice eat some nice food and try to relax best you can altho I know it’s impossible xx

Really need some advice please, I’ve spent the last 11 days frantically searching the forums and no idea where to post properly just finding threads.

IVF pregnancy - double embryo transfer 29/07
Positive HCG - 282 07/08

Went to EPU on 13/08 due to a niggly dull ache lower back, only panicked because it’s our first pregnancy and IVF has made me an anxious mess! Pain subsided 3 hours later, no bleeding at all and no pain since this day!

Suspected ectopic, then a few days later that was ruled out and tubes clear, first doctor said “tubal miscarriage” and to have emergency surgery that night! Second doctor apologised and said “no your tubes are clear but with your HCG levels we should be seeing something as your dates are exact” (like it’s a textbook pregnancy and has to follow the rules because it’s IVF).
Repeated bloods (doubling), repeated scans and first 2 showed nothing at 5+1 and 5+3, then on my third scan one of my IVF doctors in the EPU spotted the start of the pregnancy sac 19/08 at 5+5 however the sonographer suspected it was earlier than 5+5. But they suggested no surgery at all as it’s showing in my uterus!

Fast forward to my follow up IVF scan yesterday 6+4 (5 days since my last scan at EPU) a sac, a yolk and a 2mm fetal pole but no heartbeat. I also have a tilted uterus she said! The nurse was positive about it but got my private consultant to check my ovaries as they’re cystic due to the IVF and she wanted to be thorough and not miss an ovarian ectopic!
He strolls in, uses the internal wand, nurse points out the “good news it’s a uterine pregnancy” to which he replied “hmm yes but I doubt this will be viable as your dates are accurate”!!!

I felt completely deflated and wish I had spoke up! How can he say non viable when in 5 days we’ve had amazing development! Surely something is happening?

Over 10 days I’ve had 5 doctors, my private IVF consultant all calling it a mystery. My levels are doubling and high, symptoms are there!

Do IVF pregnancies definitely follow the rules, dates, tick boxes and milestones to the exact dot?

The lovely nurse wants to rescan in 5 days and gave me a scan photo just so I could show my partner.

If there’s anywhere else I can post these can you please assist. I’m driving myself beyond insane and I’m a mixture of upset and angry!

Hi, any help would be appreciated. First time pregnant & totally bloody deflated and nervous. I’m usually a calm and collected type of person but today I’m off the scales with anxiety

LMP was March 2nd. Should be 6 weeks today. During the week I literally lost all my symptoms. Got terrible cramps and went straight to the maternity ward. Had my bloods and scan done. Scan measuring 5 weeks and 1 day. A yolk sac was present however there was no pole. Told come back in a week. I’m regimental with my dates & I know I’m 6 weeks today. Should I have seen a pole? Not bleeding but should I panic and now think I’ve miscarried? HCG levels 15,000.
please can someone shed some light? I just can’t wait a full week!
