Hello! I had low platelets with both my pregnancies and the only issue I had was that I couldn't have an epidural? I can't remember the specific reasons... but ended up thoroughly enjoying the remyfentanyl offered instead 🤣 maybe something to ask your midwife so you can be prepared if that's an avenue you had thought about xx

Hi,
I had low platelets and as I reached nearer my due date I had quite a few appointments with consultants to chat things through. The anaesthetist told me that I wouldn’t be able to have an epidural if they dropped past a certain number (can’t remember exactly but I think it was 80/90?). She told me not to worry about it and just ask for a blood test to be done on the day of labour to see whether I could have an epidural or not- that stressed me out as I didn’t want to have to remember to ask for a blood test when I was in active labour. My community midwife was amazing and tested me fortnightly and then weekly. My levels did continue dropping and a consultant advised me to be induced as she said the only way my levels would go back to normal, would be to give birth.
No complications due to the platelets, but I did have to really insist blood tests were taken when I was in there, even though it was the sole reason I was being induced. So just be prepared for them to say you don’t need to be checked- you definitely do.
Baby and I are both healthy following labour. Wishing you luck!

You have mild gestational thrombocytopenia. Your platelets are only slightly on the low side. First pregnancy mine were in the low 50s and I had a normal delivery. Just no epidural.

My second and third babies my count stayed above 100 and I gave birth at home with the blessing of my midwives and doctors. I just had platelet counts done every 3 weeks to make sure they weren’t dropping too fast.

I had low platelets un all 4 of my pregnancies and had 4 sections. I worked for an anesthetist and surgeon as a nanny, and when I spoke to them about my level all they said was "90 is absolutely fine it only starts getting fun when they get close to 50." Platelets renew every couple of weeks so hopefully your number will increase, mine did.

Coincidentally I just got hold of my maternity records and was reading a letter from my consultant about this. It says "Generally speaking most thrombocytopenia in pregnancy are just gestationally based and if the platelet count hovers between 50-80 generally things have a good prognosis. If the platelet count drops much below 50 then management is required, this is usually fairly straightforward and most of the treatment revolves around monitoring her levels."

He also said in another letter that I should have my platelet count checked on a 3-weekly basis at 22, 25, 28 and 31 weeks, and also... "It is unlikely that there will be any severe consequences unless the platelet count falls below 20. However if it falls below 50 I have suggested that she shouldn't have a home delivery."

I hope all went well and the consultant was helpful.

I was at the consultant for other issue thyroid and previous small baby so just mention my low platelets to her she wasn’t concerned said would only be concerned if they dropped below 100 and said she would check them at my next appointment 36 weeks and come up with a plan from there
