subchorionic hematoma

I'm 5+5, first pregnancy through IVF.

Had an absolutely horrible 24 hours. Yesterday evening (while away from home, typically) I suddenly started cramping and had a gush of bright red blood - heavy like a period. Spent all night in a&e, utterly convinced I was miscarrying. Got told to come in for a scan this morning and they've managed to see a fetal heartbeat (I was honestly shocked), and a moderate subchorionic haematoma which they said is the cause of the bleeding. Told to go home and monitor.

I've just started bleeding again. I just feel terrified and like there's no way this can have a positive outcome. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, had the same thing when I was six weeks pregnant (also through IVF). So horrible, and assumed it was a miscarriage, which was heartbreaking after years of trying and then putting myself through IVF to finally get a BFP.
When the scan showed a little heart beating I could not believe it. Apparently it’s relatively common, and although very disconcerting for the parents, it’s not harmful to the foetus. I’m 16 weeks pregnant now and not had a drop of blood since. It really put me on edge though. I was wearing sanitary towels every day for weeks just in case it happened again. But fingers crossed it was a one-off.
If you’re still bleeding tomorrow morning call the EPU/doctor. Mine was a sudden gush of red blood, then some ‘old’ brown blood the next day, like day three/four of my period.
I hope everything’s ok for you.

So sorry you are going through it! I have 3 children and all 3 I had a sub chronic haemotomas. I also had one with another pregnancy and unfortunately miscarried at 10 weeks.

With my 3 children the doctor said carry on as normal but I decided to rest up as much as poss until 12 weeks. I believe this saved my pregnancies.

Rest up, drink lots of water and I'm sure you will be fine. Bleeding during early pregnancy is so stressful I hope you are okay X

Yes I did. I was convinced I was having an ectopic as had awful one sided pains with a gush of bright red blood. I am an A&E sister, so even with my experience I thought no way is this not an ectopic as I had so much pain. Well he's 6 now so all was fine!

Thanks everyone, it's comforting to hear of other experiences. I'm just going to rest as much as possible and take it one day at a time. It's so frightening, I couldn't believe it when they said they saw the heartbeat 😭

It's really scary but so common with IVF pregnancies. My 2nd who I had this with was IVF.

Hi I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. I’m going through the exact same thing currently. My cramps and bleeding started last Friday. I paid for a private scan on Saturday confirmed she could see the bleed on the scan but a baby with a hb measuring 6+2! I couldn’t believe it! Mt bleeding stopped that day but returned yesterday awful cramps and bleeding :( it has all but stopped today but I hate not knowing what is going on. My epu won’t scan me they have no apppointments. Hope you are ok today x

MimosasInFrance · 18/05/2023 15:31

Hi @Mellous - sorry you're going through this too, it's horribly unsettling. I had a second bleed almost exactly 24hours after the first with bad cramps. Nothing yesterday but I've been taking it super easy. I'm having a scan on Tuesday and holding my breath til then. X

Same! Ivf pregnancy right now and it’s like someone turned a tap on and off! 6 weeks pg but had scan yesterday and baby alive and well…for now! Still bleeding heavily but EPU can’t see me for some time. I will go to A&E if it leads to really heavy bleed, but I understand how scary this is!

Hello I wondered what peoples outcomes on these where? This happened to be last night, bled for a few hours was convinced it was a miscarriage there was so much, was distraught this morning but went to epu who said all looking fine and dated me at 5 weeks which is right. I am also Ivf. Did anyone else take Asprin? I do as part of my protocol and I wondered if anyone did and continued to after this.

I had this with my ds (now 8 months and perfectly healthy) . I started having bleeds at 3weeks, that continued up until 16 weeks and it was really hard, every time it was distressing and I was convinced it was the end. Its so hard feeling like you can't do anything but wait and see.

Things that helped, I took it easy and took some time off work (I didn't want to bleed in front of people and resting up made me feel like I was doing something). I watched a million box sets to keep my brain busy. Told a few close friends what was happening so I'd be able to have some excitement being pregnant but also support when things were hard. I did meditations and lots of self care. But it was really tough.

It worked out great for us, we got the all clear at 16wks that everything had resolved. I'd just say be gentle with yourself, even after 16 wks I struggled to relax to enjoy being pregnant and it took me a long time to feel relaxed going to the toilet incase id bled. You're not alone, and it doesn't mean it's the end but it's very hard at the time going through it because it's so scary. I really hope it works out for you too.

I took aspirin from 12 wks on, not sure it made any difference in that regard. As far as I'm aware it's a pool of bleeding rather than an ongoing bleed, so it's just getting released in bits and pieces or it gets reabsorbed back into your system again. So I don't think aspirin would affect it.

Still pregnant 😊(27 weeks now)
I never took aspirin, was never advised to.
That was the only bleed I had, seems like an age ago. Hopefully the rest of your pregnancy goes ok too.

I was in the same situation with sch, but had no bleeding. Hematologist advised if there's no active bleeding to keep taking 3x aspirin a week (mo, wed, friday)

LittleDoveLove · 04/08/2023 17:41

Thank you that's reassuring to read your stories x

chanikins1185 · 08/08/2023 14:02

Hi, I am unfortunately a bit of an expert in SCH. Definitely review whether to take down/stop aspirin and/or too much progesterone. Those were my ivf protocols. SCH are very common in IVF, so try not to worry too much. They usually clear up in a week or two. I was also told not to have penetrative sex for a few weeks whilst it heals. I hope you’re okay and things improve!
