Hi Ladies. I had a sweep yesterday about 2.30pm and its now 8.30am the next morning, she said that last night I should lose my plug with some blood as she did do a good sweep and could feel my waters and babys head but ive had nothing, just bad cramping on and off since about about 6pm last night, fell asleep at 4am, and just woke up to no show or waters gone still 🫠😫 said I was 1cm dilated and was very happy with my cervix said its nice and soft, any other mamas had experience with sweeps and did they work/how long til you lost plug and waters? And went into actual labour?🥰 I've read if it was a successful sweep, I'll know by the time its been 48 hours So ready to meet our baby girl now. Thank you in advance! Xxx

Not had a sweep but I didn't loose my waters until about 2 hours before my daughter was born and had already been in a labour a few hours by then. I think when your waters go can vary a lot x

Is there a medical reason you’re trying to make baby come before term? There’s very little evidence supporting the efficacy of sweeps, if you’re 1cm dilated then your body is already preparing for labour. Labour starts when baby releases a protein into the amniotic fluid to say they’re ready to come, a sweep can’t make this happen. Honestly unless there’s a medical concern I’d leave baby to it.

Also my first labour my waters went first, before contractions, my second labour they didn’t go until I was pushing. So waters going or not doesn’t tell you anything!

Well considering a medical professional would have done the sweep, I guess there is a reason! Sheesh

With DS 1 I had three sweeps they didn't move things along at all. I was 2cm from 40 weeks. I know others have found they kick labour off but they just don't for me.

I see why you would think that, but it’s very often not the case. Women are encouraged to have them just because they’re uncomfortable or ‘why not speed things up’ when there’s actually no need, and they also create an unnecessary risk of infection. Most sweeps are done without a clear medical reason.

@TallulahBetty 😂😂 🙈🙈 Thank you lovely! X

Yeah I'm aware you can go in to labour if your waters haven't gone yet, I was looking for peoples experiences on if the sweep worked or not, and if so, how long after did their waters go / how long until they went into labour. Also doctor has said baby is full term now so she wouldn't be arriving "before term"

My trust won’t do a sweep before 41 weeks and both of mine came before then so can’t comment personally. However I know a lot of people who have had sweeps done and none have ever gone into labour from it. I don’t think I’d bother with one because of that.

Bibijuju · 16/05/2023 15:57

I had a sweep at 39 weeks, was 1cm dilated. DS was born in the early hours at 39 + 4
i personally will be getting one again if offered again for baby 2!

Jammiedodger12 · 16/05/2023 16:46

I had a sweep with DS at 40+3. Waters broke at 40+5 and DS made an appearance at 49+6.

Had a failed sweep yesterday with current pregnancy and will have another tomorrow. Hopefully more favourable!

Freespirit98 · 17/05/2023 00:38

@Bibijuju this gives me hope! Thank you, yeah I did get told if it's going to work I will go into labour within 48 hours, will be 48 hours at 2pm ish tomorrow! So we will see 🤣 If I am still pregnant saturday I will be getting another one x

It's quite hard to remember the exact details, but had a sweep with DS1 who was a bit late (about 3 days), and within 48 hours, went into labour. 10lbs 2 born but a difficult birth (ventouse, forceps etc). DD1 was a week late, due the same day as DD1 but a year on (I suspect her dates were a bit wrong) had a sweep, and forgot about it as was dealing with DS1 and she was born after a few hours of labour (I did not realise I was in labour so it was a massive rush, no issues though and 9lbz 2 oz). DD2 was nearly, 2 weeks late, sweep after sweep, no effect, nothing moving her (eventually induced (not my fave) and born after a couple of hours of bloody agony (9lbs 13). Finally the lightweight, DS2, would not get head down, and induced at 37 weeks due to my previous fast labours, bloody agony, was my lightest at 8lbs 13, but about 4 weeks early given my previous record, thank god I didn't go full term at that weight - he was also obviously "early" - covered in vernix later troubles etc.. No sweep given (or needed) The sweeps are fine. Hurts for 5 minutes, if that. Being induced isn't so painless. Also my waters never broke until I was about to push with any of them (and sometimes broken for me). HTH, good luck and congrats xxx

Jammiedodger12 · 17/05/2023 10:42

@Freespirit98 thanks! Hopefully this one is a bit more favourable. If not have another one on sat and induction booked for Monday!

Scottishdreams1991 · 17/05/2023 10:46

Had a sweep at 38 wks i was 2-3 cm but still needed induction at 39 wks. He was number 3 aswell!

Freespirit98 · 17/05/2023 14:41

@Jammiedodger12 Me too! But induction isn't booked I will be booking it Saturday if nothing happens, I think I'm losing my mucus plug but I'm not 100% sure , there's loads of pics on here isn't there so going to have a look 🙈🙈🙈🤣🤣🤣

Sweep went good. Said he got a good feel round babies head. I'm 2cm and 2cm length (which was exactly the same as I was with my son when I had a sweep) . Was definitely more uncomfortable than the one on Monday. So fingers crossed something happens in the next few days!

Freespirit98 · 17/05/2023 15:53

@sjpkgp1 aw thank you for your reply! Loved reading the stories of your births 🥺 it's amazing, but the unknown of going when it's going to happen is killing me! Yeah the sweep was fine, midwife actually said to me oh you'll breeze through labour because I found it painless and not even uncomfortable to be honest! She said she's had women in literally screaming and crying off a sweep bless them 🤭

I think I may of lost my mucus plug about an hour ago, but I don't know if its mucus from hemorrhoids I've got internally 🤢 wow the joys of pregnancy! It certainly looks like my plug but I'm not 100% it's threw me right off! 😭 xxx

@Scottishdreams1991 thank you for your reply! Really omg 🙈 I was 39+2 when I had the sweep but this is my first baby. I am due Saturday that's when I have an appointment and will discuss induction then. If im still pregnant I think I will 100% take induction, I can't do another week feeling like this 😭
