that's it, really. because of her past history she's getting a scan tomorrow, reckons she's six weeks and is desperate to see a heartbeat. i can't remember when i saw a heartbeat with dd so am useless. any thoughts?

possibly. I saw a heartbeat at some point between 6.5 and 7 weeks (dates got mucked about, that's why I'm vague). I think that heartbeat is usually visible at some point between 6 and 8 weeks.

Lulumama · 17/02/2008 23:10

oooh, maybe, but maybe not. and not neccesarily anything to worry about. 7+ weeks is usually better. but hope all is well. is she sure of her dates?

AitchTwoOh · 17/02/2008 23:17

ish. she remembers, er, cervical fluid of an inviting nature so is assuming that's when she ov'd. it's hard, it would be so nice for her not to have to worry any more. (i mean, i know she'd still worry but it's v comforting to see an HB.) does anyone know the stat? i'm sure i read somewhere that after an HB seen the chances of things working out okay are much, much higher.

well, i don;t know any stats, but seeing hearbeat is good... hope it is all ok

AitchTwoOh · 17/02/2008 23:22

och i hope so too, lulu. it's such a stressful time for her. but then as i recall, the whole thing is pretty tense.

I saw a strong, definite heartbeat with DS1 at 6+6.

Good luck to your friend - she must be very anxious.

TotalChaos · 17/02/2008 23:30

absolutely off the top of my head - I think if you see the heartbeat at 6 weeks, there is a 84% chance of a successful PG, and if you see the heartbeat at 8 weeks, there is a 95% chance of a successful PG. (looked up the stats myself when PG with DS over 4 years ago)

AitchTwoOh · 17/02/2008 23:34

i knew there was something TC, i'll pass it on. after she's seen the heartbeat, of course, not before...
have emailed you hunk.

TC, that sounds about right - I seem to recall that sort of figure from my early scans. I had another one at 8+6 with DS1 and he looked like a kidney bean with a flashing middle.

pinkteddy · 17/02/2008 23:45

I had scan at 6 weeks and they couldn't see anything, couldn't even confirm pregnancy although from memory they said signs of sac but nothing else, by 8 weeks like hunker says - kidney bean with distinct flashing heartbeat! HTH

Sketchi · 19/02/2008 21:04

I had a scan and I was 6 weeks and the heartbeat was there.

Skimty · 19/02/2008 21:07

I had same thing as pink teddy. The scan said that I was under 5 weeks when i don't think I could have been!! Was worried about a missed miscarriage etc.

Had a scan at 8 weeks and the scan age has started to catch up with dates age and I saw that little heart beat.

So, if she doesn't see anything, she's not to worry.

soph28 · 19/02/2008 21:08

I had scan at just 6wks with 1st pg (after bleeding) and clearly saw heartbeat. Couldn't really see anything else but definitely a heartbeat!

theangelshavethephonebox · 19/02/2008 21:08

I had a scan at 6 weeks and saw the heartbeat, then another at 8 weeks. The difference between them was amazing - he was just a blob at 6 weeks, but looked just like a jelly baby on the 8 week one.

AitchTwoOh · 19/02/2008 21:30

thanks everyone who replied, the great news is that she saw a heartbeat. she's not sure of dates exactly but the doc evidently said that she'd likely be more than 5+4 because they can't see hbs in transabdominal scans before that. so she's to go back in a month for a dating scan, i think they're taking care of her because of her history. she is, as you might imagine, cautiously pleased so i've passed on the stats. (although i was thinking anyway that the miscarriage rate is always reported as one in four so it doesn't actually fall much if the hb is seen early... ) won't pass that on, though.

Great news. Seeing a heartbeat really does help the chances of a successful pg. It is very unusual to see before 6 weeks, I think (with ds2 there was none at 6+2 on transvaginal scan), so that's also a good sign that she is where she thinks she is in the pg and the baby is appropriately developed for gestational age, iyswim.

hunkermunker · 19/02/2008 22:01

Very glad she saw a heartbeat, Aitch - and also that she's being looked after so well

AitchTwoOh · 20/02/2008 11:10

me too.

Glad it was good news. Am very surprised that they did an abdominal rather than vaginal scan. Abdo scans are about a week behind vaginal scans in terms of what can be seen so early on in PG.

AitchTwoOh · 20/02/2008 11:29

it was a vaginal, i meant to say trans-vag and must've mis-typed. you were correct to be surprised, lol.

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 20/02/2008 11:52

mind you I shouldn't be so surprised, when I had bleeding at what I thought was 7 weeks PG, the sonographer did an abdominal scan.

aitchtwoh hth Looks like chance of mc statistically after hb found is 5% or so xx
